Interested in James A. Quillen and his brother Elijah Quillen. Both born in VA. Parents migrated to IN. Elijah then went on to Iowa. James A. followed a few years later, then he migrated on to NE. Believe they are the sons of John and Nancy Wayland. Many people have this Elijah as a son of William. I disagree. Would like to correspond with descendants to understand their perspective.
Paula G. Herron

I am looking for information that would help solve the mystery of Charles Edward Delmore.
This is the family story as related by several members:
Charles' mother died. His father remarried. Step-mother had son,had conflict. Left home. Came to north Alabama. Married.Had several children before wife found that he was Catholic. Or, had "rest of the story". Census records that he was born in New York. Granville has been mentioned. His grandchildren do not remember him having an accent.
On the cemetery record for Mrs. Delmore, her name is listed as:Mary Ann Delmore (Quillen)
Is thought that he had a sister who moved to Illinois.
Michael and Emma are other names that have been repeatedly mentioned.
The Delmore name was supposed to be taken from his Grandmother.
If anyone has any thing that would help with this, and be willing to share, I would be most grateful.
On behalf of several interested parties, I thank you.
Charle

Re: Quillin Family Book

Am interested in this book and the mention of the Quillens who went to Arkansas. Believe my ancestor, Rebecca Anderson who married John Anderson 26 Sept. 1822 in Lawrence County, IN, was the eldest child listed often as unknown daughter of William Quillen b. 1753 prob VA. Many researchers believe Rebecca was a Whitehead as several of the Anderson siblings married into the Whitehead Family and they married into the Andersons.

What caught my eye is that after 1867 Rebecca and John left IN and went with their daughter, Mary Ann who married a Davis, to Arkansas wehre it is believed that Rebecca died. This area is Prairie Co., Arkansas. John then went to KS with the Davis family. The Daivis family travelled back and forth from Arkanas to KS and back again.

I would really to like to tie Rebecca in more so with the Quillens of IN. I am positive the John Anderson who married Rebecca is my ancestor and that his Rebecca Catherine's maiden name was Quillen.

Also, the 1840 Census Boone County, IN, has these names in order:
Quillin, James
Andersn, John
Parton, Seth
Quillin, Elijah

Any suggestions, ideas, and/or help greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Paula G.

Glad to hear from you. The information I have regarding Vernie Quillen came from my grandmother's obituary in The Shelbyville Republican Newspaper from Shelbyville, Indiana in December 1934. My grandmother was 23 years old when she died. The obituary mentions my grandmother's (Lucy Ridley Martin), brothers and sisters. And all it says about Vernie is "foster brother Vernie Quillen, who is in the U.S. Navy". I know Lucy's parents were James & Maggie (Vaughn) Ridley, and they were married January 3, 1901 in Hamblen County, TN. Beyond her parent's names & marriage license I have nothing about them. That is why I thought if I could find someone who was related to Vernie, perhaps they would have some information regarding his foster parents (my great grandparents). I know this is a long shot. But where genealogy is concerned, I'll take my chances.
3 brothers settled in Scott County (Gate City, VA 23241) and in Sullivan County TN (Kingsport TN 37660. One brother spelled his name Quillin, the other two with the e. The library at Gate City VA 23241 has a book on the Mc Quillin, and Mac Quillen family history. It came out in the 50's and may still be in the library there. Most of the families dropped the Mc and Mac. The libary's number in Kingsport is 423-224 2539 (Reference number), and the Archives is 423-224-2559. Scott County Library is 276-386-3302. Hope this helps you. If not email me again at rlight1021@aol.com

There is a book with info on the lineage of 3 Quillen brothers. The book is Mac Quillen families
The Mac was dropped and some of the family uses the spelling Quillin even in Gate City, Scott County, Virginia 24251. Hope this helps.

I saw your query about James M Quillen and his connection to Franklin county, AL. My grandmother,Laura, born @1859 or 1860 was a Quillin and lived near Russelville, AL which is in Franklin county. I don't have any specific information about James M. I do know there are some Quillins(some are spellled that and some are spelled Quillens) buried in a country cemetery at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, south of Russelville,AL. The last time I was there which is many years ago, I wrote down some of the birth and death dates. My great-grandfather was James W. Quillin, born 1850 and there is a James J. born in 1875. Much to my regret I don't know much about my grandmother's family. I was very young when she lived with us and wasn't interested in the past and she never talked about her family. I do know that the Quillins had been in that area for a long time. There isn't anyone left, that I know of, who would know any more.

While in Salt Lake City at the FHL in October, I came across a book on the Quillin Family. It is entitled "We Passed This Way", by Malcolm Hudson, 1968. It is mostly about the Quillins who settled in Arkansas, but does give ancestors back to Teague III. I found it very helpful as I found my ggrandmother in it.

Sherrie:
I've been contacted by a lady who purchased an old trunk at an auction in Portsmouth Ohio. It contained some writings from a Wade Quillen, who I believe would be Wade Jr., son of Wade Sr. and Linnie Allie(I'm guessing on the mother's name). In the trunk was an old photograph that I'd like to identify. The only thing written on the picture is "Catlettsburg Ky." If you are interested and you think you may be able to help identify the folks in the picture I'll send it to you. It shows a family, man and wife along with 3 children posing in front of their cabin at the base of a tall hill. The time period could be anywhere from 1880 to 1900.

Bob Gardner
