Re: What happened to Martha Jane Quesenberry?

She will either be in the Quesenberry Cemetery, Indian Valley, Floyd Co VA, where her father is
or she may be in the Capt George Cemetery, Indian Valley, where her husband is.
Buried in father's cemetery most likely, since she died so young, and her grave is most likely unmarked or the marker unrecognizable. It's not listed on FAG for either one, but in my experience doing cemetery surveys, there are more unmarked graves than marked ones in these old places.

What happened to Martha Jane Quesenberry?

I'm looking for the birth, death burial of Martha Jane Quesenberry. Her father was Asa R. Quesenberry and mother was Frances Jane Hollinsworth. She was married to Lee Johnson Quesenberry son of Joshua Quesenberry and Melinda Moore. The last record I've been able to find on Martha was a 1900 census listing her as the wife of Lee Johnson and two children, Curtis and Cullen. Later census show Curtis living with Lee J. and his new wife Lillie. Cullen was living with his mother's parents Asa and Frances Jane Quesenberry. We don't know what happened to Martha Jane. I was told she died in child birth as well as the baby. Don't know where her grave is.

Re: Children of James Quesenberry from Baltimore

Frank (Francis DeSales Quesenberry) was actually born July 2, 1883 and not the 1876 that he used. No idea why he needed to be older. He died Dec 4, 1968 in National Park, Gloucester County, NJ. He married on March 26, 1916 in Atlantic City, Atlantic County, NJ to a Margaret Vanneman Graisbery. She was born March 2, 1900 in Atlantic City, NJ and died Nov 25, 1983 in Woodlbury, Gloucester County, NJ. The Graisbery family landed in NJ around 1680 from Barbadoes.

I do believe James Garland was a Sergaent with the the 22nd Regiment Virginia Cavalry, also known as Bowen's Regiment Virginia Mounted Riflemen, was organized October 27, 1863, with 10 companies, described below. The regiment was raised by Colonel Henry S. Bowen, former Colonel of the 188th (Tazewell County) Militia. Brigadier General John Stuart Williams had given Bowen authority to raise the regiment.

Company G - Captain William O. Moore's Company was organized August 1, 1863, primarily from residents of Wythe County, with significant numbers from Carroll, Grayson, and other surrounding counties.

What I do not know about James is the date and place of his death. Likewise for his wife mary. I am unclear on who the father of james is. Would you have this information?

Perhaps we could exchange information.
I am a descendant of James Garland Quesenberry. He is an ancestor on my dad's side of the family, and my father grew up in Baltimore. Edward Lusby was my dad's grandfather. I have heard that James Garland Quesenberry rode with the 22nd VA cavalry during the American civil war. We would love to know more about Frank Quesenberry, because we lost track of him.

We have the same Moses! And I think I've just found a marriage record for his son James and Sarah Philips, so I think we have a match!

Also, the will names Moses' daughter Sarah Philips, but she was Sarah Quesenberry, married to Thomas Philips...

Brothers listed in my Moses' will were Frederick (married to Mary Gallimore Huff), Amos, James (married to, I think, your Sarah Philips), George (haven't gotten to him yet) and a daughter-in-law Polly Quesenberry Largen (not sure yet the name of her first husband, but the children named are Quesenberrys, so she apparently had been married to a deceased son of Moses).

Thoughts? Corrections?? I think we're cousins :)

Well, anything is possible! My Amos, born abt 1814, appears as "Amos" in the 1850-1900 censuses and in the two marriage records I've been able to find (to Usely Goad, first wife, and Nancy Campbell, third wife; I haven't found a marriage record for him to his second wife, Mahala). Moses, the man I believe was his father, named an "Amos" in his will, but didn't specifically identify him as his son. It's not a common name, so I'm sure our two are connected in some way... BUT how?

Morgan

Ballard Preston Quesenberry was my grandmother's brother. He was the son of Floyd and Elizabeth Hale Quesenberry. If you go to Familysearch.org you will find Floyd and Elizabeth in the 1880 census. At that time the only children were Elizabeth's children Floyd, Mollie and Ida Hale. I believe that Ballard was the youngest of Floyd and Elizabeth's children. I have more info about him, but can't find it at the moment. You can find him on Findagrave.com too. He is buried in Thornspring Cemetary in Pulaski, VA.

Elizabeth's name was Sarah Elizabeth, but she went by her middle name. Which I am finding seems to have been quite common. Of course, you know that since you go by your middle name. So does my son Chad. The name Theda Ritter seems familiar, but I don't remember her. I have a picture of Aunt Alice somewhere. I'm trying to find all my old pictures now. I also have a picture of Grandma with her mother, her sister Ida and her siter Annie along with several children, all in the same picture. Lizzie May Collins is also in it. She was Aunt Ida's daughter. There could have been a Floyd on the Mitchell side. There were quite a lot of Mitchell brothers. There is a wealth of info in Bessie's house. When I go there at Thanksgiving, I'm going to go look for the old family bible.

I know your post was from over a year ago, but hopefully you are still active on the board. Ruth Mitchell Quesenberry was my mother. I was curious as to how you found the info on my grandparents and parents. I've been searching for my grandmother Dove and can't find her mentioned. I'm glad you gave me her birthdate and marriage date. I didn't have those although I knew she was born in June. I have questions about her mother Elizabeth. She had three children already when she married Floyd Quesenberry. They were Ida, Mollie and Floyd Hale. But I don't know who she was married to before and is the info on her parents correct. I can't find any Hiram Hale except one who was killed in the Civil War. Thank you for any help you can give.

Jane, this is Elaine. I have that same Quesenberry info from Neva, but I believe it is not all correct. Floyd Preston was our grandmother's father and she was born in 1888. Her mother was Elizabeth Hale, but the 1880 census lists three Hale children who would have been Elizabeth's because it lists them as Floyd's step-children They were: Ida, Floyd, and Mollie. I know we have the right Floyd and Elizabeth because I remember our mothers and aunts talking about Aunt Ida, and Aunt Mollie and Uncle Floyd. My question is who was Elizabeth's father? Was she a Hale married to a Hale? It is unlikely that she was a single mother with 3 children. So I think Neva's information on great-grandma Quesenberry is not correct. I think she was married to Hiram Hale instead of Hiram being her father. I'm going to keep looking until I figure it out.

Amos Quesenberry

Does anyone have an Amos Quesenberry in their family? I'm researching my line that goes back from my great-grandmother Mary Etta Quesenberry Elliott (born Washington Co, VA 1870) to her mother Emma Elizabeth Quesenberry Roberts Bright (born 1851, Washington Co, VA) to her father, Amos Quesenberry. The only evidence I've found of him is in census records; they suggest he was born c. 1813-14 in Virginia, and lived in Washington Co and died possibly in Grayson Co, VA. Thanks so much for any clues you can offer -

I have marriage records for Mary Etta and Emma Elizabeth; if you're researching Quesenberrys and would like copies, please ask.

Best -
Morgan

I remember Mamma and me going to Lizzie Maes, I can't remember if it was a day trip or around town I have a lot of pictures of the Mitchell side of the family. Especially one, where they had a reunion at Carters Park. There were a lot of them there about 5 rows deep. They had children in baby carriages, this was when Grandma and Granddaddy first got married.
If Sarah was her middle name,I've been looking for the wrong person. I didn't realize that pictures were still in Aunt Bessies House. I bet you can find a lot about our heritage there. Theda Ritter said she was some kin to Ballard. She was older than us and I'm not exactly sure where she lived. I do know she was popular.

Jane

She contacted me about the Quesenberry side of the family, she is kin to us in some way. I have a picture of Aunt Mollie and I met Aunt Ida. I remember there was talk about an Uncle Floyd. I thought there was an Uncle Floyd on the Mitchell side too.

I am looking for any of the five children James Garland Quesenberry (Dec 1846 - between 1910-1920). James was born in Pulaski Co., VA and may have died in Baltimore but I am not sure. He married Mary Rose Lusby around 1876 in Baltimore (maybe). Their children were:
Edward Lusby (Feb 15, 1878 Baltimore)
Margaret (Apr 30, 1880 - Baltimore)
Frank D (Jul 2, 1883 - Baltimore)
Mary R (Mar 1884 - Baltimore)
Loretta G (Sept 1888 - VA)

I am descended from Frank. The family story is he moved to New Jersey and was disowned by his father and family. I am hoping to find any child of these people so I can fill out my file.

Here in Southwest Virginia, most people say it as the first syllable in question, there are some that use the QUI, and they say quizenberry. It has also been documented in census records as Crusenberry, Grossenberry, Questenberg, Questenberry, et. All depends on who was writing it down as to how the spelling went. But SWVA mostly uses the first spelling/pronunciation.
