Jimmy Anderson, I'm very interested in learning about your "Stringer" line. My grandmother was Etta Mae Thomas Parton Stringer and grandfather was Dr. Oscar E. Stringer. Dr. O.E. Stringer was born in Vandalia, Illinois in 1873. His parents were Dr. Hezekiah Melbourn Stringer and Isadora Sethmann Pitchner (Pilsner?). He had a brother named Jamie or James who became a dentist. It would be a real mystery if it turned out that these Stringers were related to Sara Catherine King.
My grandmother, Etta Mae Thomas, was the daughter of William Jasper Thomas and Martha Jane Morgan. Her mother, Martha Jane, died when she was young. Jasper's sister, Sara Jane Thomas came to live with them along with her son Lee E. Parton. The family rumor is that Lee Parton , born 1877, was the son of William Clarke Quantrill and that Quantrill had actually survived beyond what history tells us.
Etta Mae Thomas, born 1880, married Lee Parton who was (as far as we know) her first cousin bearing him two sons. She left Lee for the town Doctor, Doc Stringer. Together they had 4 children, one of whom was my mother. This was in the town of Achille, Oklahoma.
I think it an interesting coincidence that Sara Catherine King had a brother named William Jasper King. In reading some of the messages supporting the rumors about Quantrill surviving, it mentions that these people frequently changed their names or took the names of family members in order to conceal their identites.
Another interesting thing that caught my attention was found on the Chronicals of Oklahoma website. There is a record of a marriage between a Jasper Thomas and Catherine King in 1873 in the Cherokee Nation.
Any information would be appreciated.

This is too strange. I have heard many tales of WCQ myself & am trying to get my family tree straight. We have rumors of a descendant of his in the family but the unusual thing here is that person who would be my Great Grandfather married his first cousin & after having two children, his wife left him & married the town Dr...... My mother referred to them as Pa Doc & Granny Stringer! One of the people I am researching in addition to finding out who is the real father of my Great GFather is the Stringer family. This would have been Dr. Oscar E. Stringer, Dr in Achille, OK back in the early 1900s. He may have been married before marrying my Grandmother/cousin but her name was Etta Mae (Thomas) Parton when she married Pa Doc. They had several children who were my Mother's cousins that used to visit us when they came "home" to visit. Thank you for any Stringer info you may wish to share. ps Dr & Etta Stringer are buried in the same local cemetery as most of my immediate family & I probably have pics of the headstones if you need them. Have a great week!

The rumors in my family for years have been that William C. changed his name & survived for many years more than is being reported. Is there info out there available that could prove this? Possibly a real burial site so that DNA testing could be done? I would like to resolve this since he "supposedly married" one of my fore mothers & it could possibly help me continue with my family tree - which is currently stuck at the point he was supposed to be in the picture, which is 1877.... Thanks for any info. you may be willing to share.

There have been several tales that WC Quantrill was not killed during the battle on Wakefield Farm as reported. I am sure that with all the advances in DNA that this could be determined by doing a DNA on the remains from that battle & the remains from Quantrill's father, who should be buried in Ohio. That would be the place to start, & if these two are not father & son the search would continue until the real location of Quantrill's burial site is found.

A few years since this post. Have learned quite a bit. Carrie Bell Quantrell was the daughter of Charles Quantrell, William's brother.
Mary Deuel was the mother of Agnes Deuel, Carrie's brother, Jared's, wife.
There WERE several siblings in the Bedwell family.
The photo I had was actually of Jared Quantrell and William Bedwell- not George.
Lots of disinformation in our family.
Renewed interest in the genealogy due to more information now on line, and several additional valid family researchers, to whom I give a very large THANKS.

I'll be glad to share my photos with all who are researching.
Your husband and I do share William Quantrell and Harriet Buckle. I am SO excited to connect with you. Your Charles' father, (William)- was my great grandmother's father's brother. He was also Charles--His children were Llewellyn, Ernest, Jared and Carrie Bell Quantrell. I have a photo of Ernest (looks to be just before he died, as he was only 16 at passing).. When I say I have an older photo of your William, I mean he is older in age...Wearing his Masons pin, etc. (This is the one which shows his ear) Also have one of Hattie (his wife) also at older age.
I'm really interested in the death of William in England, as I have been told by others that he was actually sent on a prision ship to Australia. The story went on to indicate that Harriet brought her 10 children to America by herself. I had recently begun to doubt the part about her coming to America without a husband, due to my Charles using the name Charles Clarkson in one of the censuses. I forgot which, and dont have my documentation close by right now, but you can find him in the census records as Charles Clarkson..Llewellyn and Ernest were the children of Lorena Marsden. I stopped researching a while back and only recently began again. We have most recently been researching my daughter-in-laws side of the family. They are Ayers. I had pretty much given up on getting any further back on Quantrells, so I was astounded to get a notice from ancestry that there was recent info on Quantrell. AND you have SO much info and documentation.
Did you say you also have more from England??
Thanx for all your information. I have to either find the disk that some of the Quantrell photos are on or get my scanner on line very soon. (I do have a younger tin-type of Llewellyn- not sure I can scan it- but the tin-types are starting to fade, so I think I'm gunna try)
Hope to hear more from you soon. :-)

Hello,

Thanks for the clarification on Mary Bailey Gore. I was getting a little confused on that one. Where I and the other ladies really got a jump start was information on a message from Dave Boylan on the ancestry message board under general, Norfolk, England where I posted question on William Quantrell b. in Norfolk. He was able to find a lot of baptism information for us. The lady researching Mary Quantrell/Quantrail/Bestor/Bearby/Rathburn was the one who made the breakthrough on finding the Claxon family immigration on June 21, 1831. 15 members in all counting some of Harriet's stepchildren. I was also able to find a book listed for sale and I was able to look at their information on. I googled up Passenger arrivals at the Port of New York, 1830-1832 by Elizabeth Petty Bently and was able to see page 168/169 that they are on. We all have been researching from there. Not all our information is posted, since we mainly following our direct lines on ancestry's trees. After that I was able to get Harriet's headstone and it's posted and documents for the direct line I'm researching for my husband.

My tree is public and I believe it's call Harvey and Rogers. The easiest way for you to access the information is probably go to Llewellyn on your tree and check out member connections and you should find my tree listed. Go into it and I have 50% at least of my documents attached to it.

There's a www.familysearch.org site that has information along with http://fsbeta.familysearch.org that you can get a lot of information from. If you want information on Charles siblings that stayed in Cleveland they have some great websites like http://probate.cuyahogacounty.us/ml and Cleveland Public Library - Cleveland Necrology File.

There seems to me to be 2-3 groups in the U.S.A. back then. The one out east in NY(?) area I think springing from a Thomas Quantrill is the one William Clarke Quantrill comes from? I researched that line only briefly to try and find a connect, but if there is one it goes all the way back to Norfolk, England from what I can see. Though I have also been told the story from my inlaws that their Quantrells are related to William Clarke Quantrills and that his paid them a visit in Michigan and at one time someone had a picture of them and Jesse James, but no one is sharing said pictures. The wedding entry for William Quantrill/Quantrell and Harriet Buckle does mention a Thomas Quantrill was a witness at their wedding, but Quantrell/Quantrill seems to be a common enough name in Norfolk at the time. I think I have the copy of the church document attached to William Quantrill/Quantrell on my tree.

As far as posting pictures on ancestry. 1st you have to scan them in on your printer and save them to hard drive. Then you go to ancestry.com and open up your tree. I like to attach the photo to the person profile in question. So you can go to Llewellyn profile and the easiest way I found if you don't already have pictures attached is click on the male outline photo they have at the top other was just go down to add media. I think they send you to a scene that has a bunch of lines asking for the file name. Click on browse and you can look through your pictures on the hard drive and click the one you want and hit the open button. If you have more than one go down to the next browse. When done click orange box at bottom that says upload photos or something (sometimes a takes a minute there). Then a scene comes up asking you to give information about each photo and lets you pick the primary photo for the profile. Put in that information and then go down to the bottom I think and hit the orange button that says attach photos. After that it goes back to the profile or there's a button at top that says go back to the profile you have successfully added photos.

I hope this answers all your questions. If you want send me a message to my tree and you can give me your email address and I can email you the bios I have done so far and add you to are research group that shoot each other emails on any updates.

Hello,

I'm not related. I'm doing the research for my husband's side of the family that is. They are related to Dora Quantrell Harmon child of Charles Quantrell child of William Quantrell child of William Quantrell and Harriet Buckle. Llewellyn was the child of Charles Quantrell (brother to William) who was a child of William Quantrell and Harriet Buckle. It could be just in Charles line depending on who was the mother since he was married 2x. I haven't really looked at their ears that much though. I do have pictures posted of Charles' brother and sister Emeline you could look at and see on my tree also. Do you have the older picture of Llewellyn posted on ancestry.com? I would like to get a copy if possible for me and the other ladies researching this line at ancestry. Thank you.

If you are a relative, do you know of any of your relatives who have this trait?? So far, I am the only one in my family to have it. Thought it was a birth defect until one of my kids noticed he has the same trait in the photo. (Not shown in your photo as he is showing his left ear) We both have the double earlobe on the right ear only. :-/

Hi ldkrrogers !!
Just read your current post and the one from 4/14/09. I'm assuming you now know that William and Charles were brothers. Charles was my great great grandfather. They also had a brother Benjamin, and several sisters- one of whom was Rebecca, who was blind. (I've packed most of my research stuff away, but there were 10 children in all.
I'm extremely excited about your post, as it is the first information I have seen on Harriet Quantrell's maiden name. Where can your documentation be found?? 2nd wife's maiden name was Bailey- she had a prior marriage to Gore.
I'm extremely glad you are researching this particular family, but I am interested in why you are doing so. Also, how do I access the photo you mention, AND how do I post photos?? I have photos and tin types of Llewellyn, Carrie, Ernest and Jared. Also photos of the Bailey G G G Grandparents.
Looking forward to hearing from you!!!!

Hello, I'm doing research on the Quantrell family that came from Norfolk, England. Parents were William Quantrell/Quantrill and Harriet Buckle. William died sometime aroun 1829-1830 in England. Harriet remarried to William Claxton/Claxon/Clarkson and they immigrated along with her children and stepchildren to U.S.A. on June 21, 1831 on the ship Richmond at a New York port and then traveled out west to Cuyahoga County, Ohio. A son of William Quantrell and Harriet Buckle was Charles Quantrell. He lived in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan. He is buried back in Indiana with his first wife and one son Ernest E. Quantrell. Llewellyn John Quantrell was another son he had with his first wife. Here's something interesting for you:

In 1938, an anonymous gift to the University of Chicago created an endowment, the purpose of which was unique in American higher education: a monetary award to be presented annually to faculty members in recognition of their excellence in teaching undergraduate students. The donor’s anonymity technically prevailed for more than a decade, but in 1952, University Trustee Ernest Quantrell added to his gift, consented to be acknowledged as the donor and named the award for his parents, Llewellyn John and Harriet Manchester Quantrell.

Charles also had two more children with a second wife Mary. Not 100% sure at this point if her surname was Gore or Bailey. There is a wedding record for Charles and Mary Gore in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. The other two children with her was a Jarrod Quantrell and a Carrie Quantrell. I have a public picture I submitted of Llewellyn Quantrell on ancestry.com if your interested. I don't know if I spelled his name exactly right when I submitted it. Also have a bunch more information on tree going back to England your welcome to look at along with Harriet and her second husband William Clarkson headstone picture.

I have no desire to argue anything about WCQ. This is just for consideration. I would like to have any additional info. about cousin Kate. In my family history is the belief that WCQ and Kate King, a distant cousin of mine, married in 1863. On the Lawrence, KS website she is mentioned as a common-law wife. After the war she took his middle name and was known a Kate Clark. She was listed in the 1870 census in St. Louis, MO.; occupation "whore" with 19 women in her employ and with a worth of $7,000. Her mother was a Stringer, that in the line I am related through.

I believe that the man( Dewitt Travis) reportedly the SON of William C Quantrill showed up and paid for the funeral expenses of J.F. Dalton in Granbury Texas. I have heard claims that Dewitt Travis Jr was at the Burial of bones at Higginsonville Mo. These bones are not William Clarke Quantrill of Civil War Missouri/ & Lawerence Kansas Fame! I don't know about Dewitt Travis 1 or 2 of if they were related in some manner. The only real child I know was Laura Lee who died in 1869 of yellow fever. Her mother was a Missouri Younger who Quantrill got pregenant in Dec 1863/ Jan 64. Laura was born in Sept 1864 near Waverly Missouri. This is north of Higginsonville where McGrudger's bones were buried. These were the bones that Kansas State Historical Society had displayed since they got them from WW Scott @ 1888/1889. They WERE NOT actually the Bones belonging to Quantrill. History has been decieved of true facts since the travels of Scott and Ms Quantrill in 1888/1889.

The Duell connection from my understanding was Carrie Quantrell was the daughter of Mary Duell and poss. a Bandit Quantrell. Are you possibly related to Glenn Carroll or my dad Jared Albright. I have some pics but alot of them don't have names or dates on them. Would be interested in what info you have. E-mail me @ curleydeb@ aol.com. I know I am related to you somehow. Due to family embarrasment (?) or simply reticence and those who would have this info having mostly passed away I have no one to ask. Was or could thier have been a name change after he died? I am a little stuck in my research.
Thanks for any info you can give me.

Robert Evans "Bob" Quantrell / Quantrill

I am seeking information about Robert Evans "Bob" Quantrell who was the son of Emily Rhoda Evans and unknown Quantrell. He was born about 1840 probably in Jackson county, Missouri. In an early 1900 interview with his first cousin, Harriette Harlan Shiew (Shoe), she mentioned him (see below), but I have been unable to locate him in census records and would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information about him or his family. You can contact me at TRRPE@aol.com. Thanks.

Interview with Harriette Shiew: My mother's father was Klijah EVANS and mother had an elder sister named Emily Rhoda. My mother went with her and Quantrell's father to near Cleveland, Ohio, on a trip, where they were married. Our mothers being sisters made Robert Evans QUANTRELL and myself own cousins. They lived in Jackson County, Missouri, and his father died when quite young, leaving him to care for a widowed mother.
At the beginning of the war, the Blue Coats came to their home. They threw my aunt, who was sick, together with her bed out into the sleet and snow. She died from the exposure, leaving a young son who was very bitter and who decided that he would do everything possible to get even with them. Quantrell joined the army at Olathe, Kansas. Cousin Bob, of course, was at our house often. Sometimes he would spend the night with us, and sometimes stop for a meal. Again, perhaps would slip in and be there a very short while. A widow named EDWARDS lived near Florence, and a Baptist preacher had a mortgage on her home for five hundred dollars. He (the preacher) came to her home one day in February and demanded the money and she told him that she could not pay him and asked him to give her time as she had small children. He refused and told her that he would be there the next morning at nine o'clock and if she did not have the money, he would put her out. That night Cousin Bob came to our house to see us as he was passing through and Mother asked him to stay all night but he said that he could not. Later
she told him what this preacher had done and asked him if he could help the widow. He studied a while and then smiled and said, "If you will take care of Ribbon and me, I'll see." I was only a small child then and he called me Wasp. I spoke up and said, "Cousin Bob, if you will stay, I [will] take care of Ribbon." That night while he slept I sat in the door all night and held the reins of the horse. This horse was trained until she could scent danger and you could tell from her actions when there was danger. Later she was shot from under him and he never ceased grieving for her. Late he rode a Claybank named Bess but he
never cared for her as he did for Ribbon. He gave mother five hundred dollars and told her to take it and give it to the widow and tell her to pay the man when he came the next morning, and to demand the return of her mortgage, which she did. Knowing the time that the man was supposed to call on the lady, he left our house and waited for him. As the preacher left her home he took the money that the lady had just paid from him.

A week later, he was at the house again and his pocket was so full of something that it was bulging and I asked him what he had in his pocket, he replied, "We dived into a store the other night and here are some ribbons for your dolls, Wasp." There were ribbons of many sizes and all colors. "That's for
holding Ribbon the other night," he said.

The Burning of Lawrence.

The women folks of the James, the Youngers and the Quantrell kinfolks had been placed for safety in a brick house in Lawrence and they had stationed pickets around the house. In some way, the other side had found a way to under-mine the house with powder, and when it exploded some of them were killed and others wounded. The burning of Lawrence was in retaliation for this. Cousin Bob, with eighty men, was camped near our house when the other side with a large force came up and camped for supper near the house. Father managed to get word to Cousin Bob and he and his men slipped away without being discovered and went ahead to Lawrence, gathering more men as they went. There was a regiment, or eleven hundred men there, and Pa had thirty acres of corn cut and shocked. They fed all of it to their horses that night. Later that night, they forced Pa to go with them and show them the road to Lawrence.
Not very far from our house the road forked in three directions and not knowing what the soldiers intended to do with Pa, and being afraid that they would kill him, I went along in my gown and barefooted. It was a clear frosty night, and they tried to get me to go back but I wouldn't. After they reached the three forks and Pa told them the way they told him that he could go back home. I was called the "Little Soldier" and no matter where Pa went, I went along. I do not know what I could have done, but I thought I could help him. It was but a few hours till we heard the sound of guns and saw the smoke of burning buildings in Lawrence. Cousin Bob did not lose a man but many were killed on the other side. In history this is called, "The Lawrence Raid."

Debbie- Who are you???
Are you Debbie Albright??
Carrie Bell Quantrell was NOT a daughter of William Clark Quantrell- he had no children- she may have been a great grand daughter of Prettyman Quantrell, who was W.C.'s grandfather...The connection may be even further back- The further back, the happier Carrie Quantrell would be... Please reply soon... I have goosebumps cause you have a lot of info that would normally be only known by my immediate family...If you arent Debbie Albright, Please tell me how you have connected Duel...We were told, as children, that our great great grandparents were Duel.. However, in our research, we have found our Great Great Grandmother was Mary Bailey- not Duel...I have photos of the Bailey family, but did not know how they connected before starting our research..Also have photos of Duels...now dont know how they connect..
Hope to hear from you very soon..
Thanx
Shirley McLeod

Debbie-
Carrie Bell Quantrell's father's name was Charles H. Quantrell.. His father was William Henry Quantrell, who came to Ohio from England in 1828...Because the family names repeat so much in our family and in W.C.s family, because he immigrated to the next county to W.C.s family, because the family continued to go back forth between Ohio Michigan/Indiana, because Carrie was named Carrie in 1864,we believe the families are definitely connected...I am confused about your Bedwell information, though...I was told that George Bedwells brother William was Georges only brother..Dont know if I was ever told about any sisters. There is a discussion on the Bedwell forum in which my daughter Carrie was told of some information which fits our family very well-i.e. the children of George Carrie Bedwell.. However, there are many more children in that family than I believed to be the case AND they show a death date for William prior to 1940...OUR William was most definitely alive in 1941. I have a photo of him holding Carrie Quantrell-Bedwell's 1st great granddaughter who was born on March 15,1941.
So, your information is VERY interesting...Please write me back asap about this...My e-mail address is "ImSam@aol.com"
Looking forward to hearing from you.

I have a William Quantrell born in Norfolk, England on January 14, 1816. Around 1829, he emigrated with his mother and siblings to the USA. He lived in Ohio for about eleven years where he married Esther Landers around 1840. He later moved to Eaton County, Michigan. His father was William Quantrell (actor in England) and his mother's name was Harriet. I'm looking for any of the siblings.

I'm afraid my William emigrated to USA around 1829 to Cleveland, Ohio area and then later Eaton County, Michigan. Though if you track your ancestry line back further we may have a commom relative. William's father was William and Harriet who lived in the Norfolk, England area.

William C. Quantrill & Sarah Jane Thomas had 1 son, Lee E. Parton, born 1877. Lee E. Parton & Etta Mae (Thomas) Stringer had a son, William Cecil Parton. William Cecil & Minnie Olva (Hall) Parton had a daughter, Helen Mozelle Parton, who is my Mother. My Mother told me recently that he Dad, William Cecil, told her he had some bad news to tell her. The news was that his Grandpa was an outlaw, William C. Quantrill. We always he knew he was buried under another name but she could not remember the name. She also remembers something about a preacher writing to her Mother, & also something about Cooper, TX, or someone named Cooper. She can't remember if it had something to do with the preacher or not.
