The son that died in the Civil War was William James Qualls- Oldest son of Levi and Melinda Qualls. He was born in 1842 and died after 1862. No records of burial so im not sure if he was buried at the battle ground or not. the only mention of Emily with a man is Henry Rogers. Not sure how he fits in.

Tracey Worrell

Christie,
A story from another researcher in Coffee Co TN, who is a descendant of Wm M. Qualls (traveling minister) and wife Julia Ann Sharp has just passed down a story from a family researcher that Wm. M. is son of Cannon Qualls. This totally jives with my theory that Cannon is the brother of my 2ggrandmother margaret Qualls who married john Orrick then Wm B. Nunley.

Margaret was married before 1850, and Cannon is shown with girls her age in the 1840 Cannon Co Census. This family is very hard to track because they happened just before the 1850 census where kids names were listed.

So, I'm confident enough Cannon now that I've added him to my tree, so this is a great thing for me.

This probably means that Cannon's father is James Calvin Qualls (Wife Elizabeth Pelfrey), and that also jives with my theory because margaret's first son is named "James C Orrick".

Anyway, email me Roger AT Arrick.com

I have done extensive research on your line, as well as the other Graddy children. In addition, I recently (after 30 years) located Lewis Graddy's parents and lineage!!
Please contact me through here, or at my home:
Teresa Townsell, 425-257-9639

Dear Susan,

Maudie Maybelle Qualls Alexander was my great-grandmother. I was born on her 80th birthday. She helped to raise my father. She lived across the street from me my whole life until she died. We were very close and always celebrated our birthdays together. She was the best woman, no person, to date that I have ever known. I have been researching my family history and have a hard time finding anything on her side of the family. If there is any info that I may have I am willing to share it with you. I don't know much about her ancestors, but I know most of her descendants. I have all of her records that the funeral home gave us when she passed. Her son J.P. "Jadie" Alexander was my grandfather. His son, Ralph Alexander, is my father. The only child she has left that is still alive is my Aunt Pauline "Polly". How are you connected with her? I remember her telling my mom that her family migrated to Hardin County where they settled on the banks of the TN River. They lived in tents and shacks on the river when she was a little girl. That is all I really know about her upbringing.

My DNA profile is linked to my family tree (Carolyn Jean Lawson). It does show links to possible 3rd cousin Qualls, so I'll follow up on that? I don't have a birth date but it would have been about 1900. The Durhams who raised my grandmother lived in West Virginia and they didn't have any helpful information other than what I noted in my first post. They were not relatives. I'll take a look at the Hopkinsville records as you suggest. Thanks for the help and for your response.

I just received results of a DNA study and I know that my maternal grandmother, Jenny Marie Qualls, was born in Kentucky. She was taken from her home as a very young child by a circuit rider, a Baptist preacher named Edward Durham. She was raised by the Durhams along with their 12 children. My grandmother was so young when she left her family that she was never sure exactly how to spell her names but she was sure that her mother died when she was a baby, that her father remarried, and that her last name was Qualls. Her first name may have actually been Virginia or Ginny. My DNA profile shows a majority of heritage that is from Great Britain, Ireland, and France. It shows no trace of Native American ancestry, though of course, there were stories of a Cherokee connection. I'm looking. For any assistance at all that will help me get started in a search for my grandmother's family. I'm happy to share my DNA profile with you if you think it will help you and others. Caroline Lawson Ilardi

My only thought is that Sarah Ann Blackfox was adopted or taken by the Chief as his own. I am digging to see if there is more data on her. Her sister Martha has a roles number but I cannot fin one for her.
Good Morning Distant Cousin,
I too am researching this link. I have the same information as you. Sometimes E'nola is written "Inali" but that is a small point. Also the Chief had at least 3 wives so there are lots of half blooded brothers and sisters to Swift Running Deer. There is some information on her father in the Cherokee histories but as was the practice the sons were discussed but the daughters were ignored. I will keep you in the loop if I find out more. Would you do the same for me?

Sincerely
David Grant Walker

PS My DNA kit is being processed I will forward results when completed.
The mtDNA test should provide another clue but we have a break in the maternal line between Sarah and your self. Did you do the cousins test? Everything that I read indicates by the time of Moses and Sarah, the Europeans had polluted the gene pool. 10% of my ethnicity is unknown. That would be about right for the trace: Elizabeth Baucom, Aaron Baucom, Mary Baucom, Henry Qualls, Carl Qualls and myself. Are you in contact with James Harris, who is an Aaron Baucom descendant? Keep us posted on your test results.

Dawn, could you supply dates and places? I have been working for a number of years tracing my Qualls/Quarles line back to South Carolina and the 1770s. Every family lines helps to narrow down the migration paths that the different family made.

Is your DNA profile linked to a family tree on Ancestry? If so, maybe it will show up as a match to my DNA profile. Also no Native american traces in my DNA profile. I had the y-dna test, leading to a European male line and the ethnicity test done , leading no where on the Qualls/Quarles line. From the census records, most of the early Qualls/Quarles in Kentucky settled around Hopkinsville, KY ion the Period 1800 to 1820. Do you know your grandmother's birth date? If she was born after 1850, census records should exist for Durhams and hopeful for the Qualls in the same region.

Dennis, the Qualls/Quarles name was around before the creation of the Qualla reservation, i.e. after the movement of most of the Cherokees west on the "Trail of Tears". Some Qualls families were listed in the 1890 Cherokee census. Some Qualls families lived among the Creeks and Cherokees after the forced move i.e. Qualls OK. This town was named after the postmaster, I think.

I belong to one of the Qualls families that are not related to any Indian tribe. At least, my DNA tests show that my male line was European. Our family history claims that my male Baucom ancestors were married to Indian ladies and living in North Georgia before moving to middle TN.

Hello,

Do you know if you are of any relation to a James Qualls [I am still researching his parents]. He was born around 1890 (or 1895) in Mississippi? He resided in Cleveland, OH from 1940 until his death around 1985. His wife was Bedfenia [Bethenia] Qualls of Alabama and they had a daughter, Maxine Qualls in Cleveland. Maxine married a Wilbur Robinson in OH, and died in 2007.

James Qualls also had a daughther-in-law by the name of Margerette(sp) Qualls of Bedford, OH. Her husband (James' son) is unknown - I am still doing research.

James Qualls had another daughter named Serena Qualls in Mississippi. Her mother was named Mary. She was born in August 1911. She married Hardy Shields in Holmes, MS around 1930 and kept his surname until death in 1987 in Chicago, IL.

Serena Qualls is my Great Grandmother, and James Qualls is my GGGrandfather.

I do know James Qualls owned a lot of land in both MS and OH.
I also know that my family and I went to his funeral in Cleveland,OH, but, no further contact has been made with my Qualls side of the family since.

*I have attached my only photo of my Great Grandmother, Serena Qualls Shields.*

Thank You.
