Re: Pyrah family in Bradford Yorks. area
Hello Lori My Great Grand Mother was Sarah Pyrah from Birkenshaw, just down the road from East Bierley. She died in 1945/6 at over 70 years and was was buried in Birkenshaw church yard where there are several Pyrah graves, her father was a home weaver and taught maths at Batley Grammer School in the evenings. I was in India working at a charity recently and for some reason asked about the name and was told one of the teachers had the same name, it was spelt differently, Pareya, but he said it was due to being mistranslated by English ears many years ago in the same way that Bombay and Calcutta have had their spellings changed in recent years. It is a very ancient Sanscrit name. Hope this helps and would be interested in any information you have. I think some of Sarah's brothers emigrated to Canada and will endevour to find out more if it turns out we have a connection. Good luck Neil

Re: Pyrah family in Bradford Yorks. area
Hello!
Just back from a break in Yorkshire that got me thinking about the Pyrah family name. My mum, Sue, now uses Pyrah (it's her maiden name) although both of her sisters have married names. My grandfather, Joe Pyrah, died about 12 years ago in Stapleford, Nottinghamshire. He and his wife, Renee, had moved to Nottinghamshire from Bingley in the 1960s I think.
I'd love to know more about the family if anyone can tell me!
Thanks
Matt Lockley

Re: Pyrah family in Bradford Yorks. area
Hello Matt, don't know much more than is in earlier message, our branch was based in Birkenshaw in the mid 1800s, and seemed to have connections to Batley area as my Greatgreat Grandfather was a weaver who taught mathematics at night school at Batley Gramarschool, possibly part of the workers education movement. Think some of his brothers or sons went to Canada, I would like to find out more if I get the time. It seems the name appeared in the West Riding around Bradford and I think it may possibly have originated in India as Pareya and the spelling mutated as it was translated into English, certainly my Grandad had black hair and his complexion was on the darker side. Regards Neil

Matthew, If your grandfather Joe Pyrah was a painter & decorator and an ex-R.S.M., then please get in touch; I know quite a lot about his family history.

Hi Debra1308 - James Pyrah of Birkenshaw born 1811 ! Could it be James Pyrah of Birkenshaw born 1805 ( Census claims 1811) who married Elizabeth Newsome? James and Elizabeth kept a beerhouse, the ALBION, DUCIE STREET, 91-92 WELLINGTON ROAD. Children, William, Albert, Eliza, Emma, Sarah & Mary. David.
