I am researching William Pyper (my gggfather) and Janet Banks and their family.
Would be grateful for any further information on the children and descendants to Wm. and Janet Pyper.
My email address is
john.pyper@blueyonder.co.uk and I live in Perth, Scotland.
I attach for your information a .ged file with my family tree information.
What I know is based on documents downloaded from Scotlands People website
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ William was born Sep 17 1813, Nigg Parish, Kincardine died aged 76 on May 22 1890, in Old Machar Poor House, Aberdeen. His parents were Wm Pyper a farmer in Faichinches and Agnes Brown.
Janet Banks was born Apr 23 1821 Portobello, (Leith, South Parish) Edinburgh. Her parents were Thomas Banks (Seaman) and Janet Cairncross. (This is based on the baptismal birth record from the Scotlands People web site and the only record to match a location near to Portobello and the birth year.) Janet died between about 1892 and 1900, probably in Aberdeen, although I have found no record of her death under the name of Janet Pyper (ms Banks).
Wm and Janet were married in Nigg Parish Kincardine on Dec 4 1841.
They had the following children all born in Nigg.
Agnes b11 Nov 1843, Williamina b29 Jul 1846, James b6 Oct 1848,
George b29 Dec 1850, Margaret b17 Nov 1852, John b8 Dec 1854
Agnes married William Walker on 31 Dec 1875 at the family home 6 Dee Village, Aberdeen. Her husband lived at 7 Dee Village. Her marriage registration states Wm was aged 25 and she aged 30, but according to her birth date she would have been aged 32. A similar discrepancy of 2 years occurs in the 1871 census. Wm Walker was the informant of the death of Wm Pyper in 1890 and his address is given as 6 Williams Square, Aberdeen.
John's name and date of baptism is left blank in the Nigg Parish Baptismal Record, so he was never baptized in that church. Census records and his death registration details confirm the year of his birth as 1854. He died John Forrest Pyper on Aug 21 1896 at 49 Upperkirkgate, Aberdeen. John is my ggfather.
Wm and Janet's other children were born in Old Machar Aberdeen
Jessie b1861, Elizabeth b 1864 (working back from 1871 cenus), George (2nd of that name) 1868 and William 1870.
In the 1841 Census Janet Banks was a female servant at South Kirkhill, Nigg Parish. In the same census Wm Pyper was an agricultural labourer at Potheugh which is a small area near the south bank of the R. Dee near the current railway bridge at Aberdeen. Her birthplace was given as being outwith the Parish.
In the 1851 census the family were living at Nigg with children Agnes, Williamina, James and George. Janet’s birthplace was given as, Haddington, Tranent
In the 1861 census Wm Pyper was a salmond fisher at Garron Fishing Bothy at Nigg Parish. The rest of the family were not there and I can find no census entry for the rest of the family living elsewhere.
In the 1871 census the family are living a 6 Dee Village, Aberdeen with children Agnes, John, Jessie, Elizabeth, George (2) and William. Agnes was a factory worker and John a blacksmith’s apprentice. Janet’ birthplace is given as Portobello, Duddiston.
In the 1881 census only Wm and Janet Pyper and son William are at 6 Dee Village, Aberdeen. Janet’s birth place is given as Dudiston, Haddington, Scotland.
In the 1891 census Janet Pyper and her grandson Thomas Findlater (aged 9 in 1891 so b1880-1881) were living at 19 Dee Village, Aberdeen.
I note that Elizabeth Liddicote, whose name I have seen on other websites, is related to a George Pyper of the Wm Pyper-Janet Banks marriage. But there were two children named George. I assume that George born in 1950 must have died in infancy and that is why there was a second child called George b1868. If you have
John Forrest Pyper (1854-1896) married Feb 27 1880 in Inverurie, to Ann Bruce (1854-?) and had at least three children. John was an engineer.
John b 1883. In 1901 census occupation was “iron turner”. (no more information at present)
Robert (Bob) b 1885. In 1901 census occupation was “iron dresser”. and emigrated to Canada (no further information)
George (Dod) (my gfather) (1887-1961) married Apr 13 1909 to Ann Adams Petrie (1885-1958). Both born and died Aberdeen. George was a granite mason and is believed to have spent some time in the USA, in Gary Indiana.
George had 3 children
Ann Bruce Pyper (b1909-d1980’s) married Henry Reid 1930 in Aberdeen
George Bruce Pyper (b1916-dc1946) married Margaret Smith Nov 7 1941 in Blackpool. Both born in Aberdeen.
Alexander Wood Pyper (1920-1977) married Flora West Dunbar (1925-2006) Jan 18 1949 in Fraserburgh.
