To respond to the note about William Pile’s father being George Phillip Pile — William O’Brien Pile was born in 1825, but he was not the son of George Phillip Pile and his wife Elizabeth Pendleton O’Brien. I’ve spent the past few weeks tracing the Piles back to Pennsylvania. William O’Brien Pile born in 1825 was actually the grandson of George Phillip Pile and Elizabeth O’Brien and there’s another O’Brien Pile in between. William O’Brien Pile’s father was named O’Brien Pile (not sure if his first name was William or not) and he was born about 1806 in Union, Berks County, Pennsylvania. I believe he was the first child of George Phillip and Elizabeth. This O’Brien Pile began going under the name “Bryant Pile” and had three wives, the first Elizabeth (don’t know her maiden name), born 1804, died before 1855, the second Mary J. Vaughn, the third Elizabeth Adeline Booher.
My ancestor, John Pile, was the youngest child of George Phillip and Elizabeth O’Brien Pile, and he was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth O’Brien’s father was Brian O’Brien, born 1745 in Ireland, and her mother was Anna Maria (Mary Ann) Thomas, born 1750 in Philadelphia.
As it turns out, the Piles were German. George Phillip Pile and Elizabeth B’Brien’s marriage record lists him as “Georg Phillip Pfeil” and his father, who went by Daniel Pile, was the immigrant from Germany, born in 1727 in Hatzfeld, Hesse, Germany. Until he changed his name to Daniel Pile, his name was Johannes Daniel Pfeil. His wife, Elisabeth (later Elizabeth) Becker, was born in Germany in 1734. They were married in 1766 in Berks County as he emigrated before she did.
