Mr Richard Pybus.
Mr Richard Pybus was born in Kingston upon Hull, on July 22nd, 1854, and educated at a private school. His father (Mr John Pybus) was a very old and respected citizen of that city. His grandfather, the late Mr William Pybus, a prominent citizen and leading solicitor in Hull, was the author of “Pybus’s Manualâ€, published at half-a-guinea in 1795, and which has had a large circulation. Going a generation further back, the great grandfather of Mr Pybus was Mr John Pybus, a celebrated coachbuilder in York, who, among other patrons, was honoured by Royalty, he being appointed coachbuilder, etc, to the Royal family. Mr Pybus’ great-uncle was owner and captain of the full-rigged fast clipper ship Midas, of renown; he held Letters of Marque from George III during the period of the French wars. These Letters of Marque are in Mr Pybus’ possession, and gained some distinction by being the only Letters of Marque exhibited at the London Naval Exhibition in 1891. Mr Pybus is 48 years of age, and has travelled extensively and somewhat frequently in Holland, France, Germany, Italy, and quite recently, through Russia; he has an extensive experience of the business customs and manners of many foreign countries. Mr Pybus came to Derby in 1892, when he joined the late Mr Thomas Holland, a nephew of the late Mr R A R Jones, as a partner of the old established firm, Ellam, Jones & Co. On the death of his partner, the business reverted to him, when for the greater development of the firm it was in 1897 converted into a private limited company. Previous to coming to Derby he was a paint manufacturer in London for over 15 years, 10 years of which he was engaged in the manufacture of paints, colours, etc., for the South American market. When he came to Derby, he immediately built and equipped with the most efficient and up to date machinery, a factory specially for the South American export paint trade, and ever since weekly shipments have been made to this market. He justly claims to have brought an entirely new trade to the good old town of Derby, which is gradually but surely developing. An unique and interesting episode of his career was on June 23rd, 1876, when he accompanied the late Captain Youens in his balloon, “Venusâ€, from Neath to Pondarwe in the Swansea Valley, about 10 miles distance. When about two miles in the air, he asked Captain Youens what the balloon was coated with, and the captain replied that he gave it a coat of boiled oil and goldsize. Mr Pybus immediately presented his card, and took an order for ten gallons of oil and two gallons of goldsize, which was duly delivered to Mr Sanger. He claims to have been the only man who ever took an order in a balloon. Mr Pybus was made a Mason in 1880, and a Mark Mason in 1881. Although in recent years he had not taken an active part in local Masonic matters, he is a subscriber to the Mark Benevolent Fund; he was Grand Steward at the Grand Lodge in 1895. Mr Pybus has taken an active part in the furtherance of the objects of Friendly Societies; he is a member of many. He also takes a very great interest in Garden Allotments, having frequently taken the chair at their annual dinners and prize distributions. He is a keen believer in the motto, “Mens sana in corpore sanoâ€, and has frequently patronised all healthy sport movements. Mr Pybus was made a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1888. He is also in the Council of the Derby Chamber of Commerce. He married the daughter (Sabina) of the late Mr John Chapman, artist, of Hull, and has three sons and one daughter. Mr Pybus’ brother (Mr John Pybus) and his brother-in-law (Dr Briggs) are members of the City of Hull City Council, of which assemblage they have been active and highly respected members for many years. – From “Who’s Whoâ€, Derby Express, October 9th, 1902
