Joseph PYATT of Staffordshire

Hello
the name PYATT is linked in a couple of instances with the SHELLEY family that I'm researching - I'm very certain that both families are related.

The first example involves a Mary Pyatt (a widow. Her husband's name was Joseph Pyatt):

I have a George Shelley (b 1853, in Stone, Staffordshire) on a 1871 census (for High Street, Stone) with a Mary Pyatt. Mary is widowed, 44, occupation: Grocer, from Fenton, Staffordshire. Also listed are her children: Lydia Ellen Pyatt, Charlotte Mary Pyatt, Frederick James Pyatt, Florence Elizabeth Pyatt, and Alice Jane Pyatt).
George, on the same census, is a Servant, unmarried, 18, occupation: Grocer's Assistant, born in Staffordshire, Stone.

But I'm sure that George is related to the Pyatts, because his grandmother's name was Sarah Pyatt. Sarah married Robert Shelley in 1816 in Sandon, Staffordshire.

Also, George's father Robert Shelley jnr (Sarah Shelley's, nee Pyatt, son) b. 1816, is on a 1841 census with what looks to be his aunt Mary Pyatt, age 60, Chapel Street, Stone, Staffordshire. Robert is age 20, occupation: joiner, from Staffordshire.

If I could trace back far enough, and find out Joseph Pyatt's parents, even grandparents, I'd find out how he and Sarah Shelley (nee Pyatt) are linked.

Does anyone out there have a connection?

Regards
Rachel Shelley

I believe that parish church records are helpful when they exist but, unfortunately, I know nothing about how to research British records. You might try the LDS Family Search site to see what records may be available for Staffordshire on microfilm for you to rent:

http://www.familysearch.org

Then click on the "library" tab and follow the prompts. This will lead you to microfilm holdings which are available for you to rent and look at where you live.

If you are successful in finding more about the family and wonder if the family of your Joseph Pyatt might be related to the Joseph Pyatt from Staffordshire or Warwickshire who fought in the American Revolution from NC, we have a descendant of Joseph Pyatt the soldier in our Piatt Surname DNA study. Results of that study to date can be seen at:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Piatt

At this point the British Pyatts seem not to share a common ancestor with the Piatts we believe are related to Rene Piatt of France. But the DNA study, the lists and message boards are places for discussion of all the lines of the surnames.

Good luck.
