How are you pronouncing "Puyear?"

Our family has always pronounced it "Prear"
I would be interested in what you found out.

Dear Don, Would you happen to recognize the names Minnie Agnes, Ruth, Ruby, or Raywick, KY? I have been searching for info on my Grandmother's (Minnie Agnes) family. Appreciate any help.
|
It's always been prear to me. 58 years
|
Terry, "prear" here as well -- 72 years

Thanks Don and Terry. Any idea from where our Ancestors originate? I cannot determine our ancestry from the spelling of our name. Thanks!

Shawn, My understanding is that the name is French and that we came from the French Hugenots who formed a colony in North Carolina in the early to mid 1600s to escape from the religious wars in France at the time. I have also found reference that Puyear is, at root, the same name as the Pierrier water name. Don Puyear

I know it's been a few years since you asked this question. I married a Puyear and he pronounced it PooYear. He said the name is French, and altho' I can't spell the original name is was 'de Puyay'; that's what it sounds like. My husband had two uncles that were walking thru' the states. One stopped in, I think, the state of Virginia where a town was named after him (Puryear). We have pictures, and altho' there's a sign, it doesn't show a population. The Uncle went on to end up in Oregon, where my husband was born.
