origins of Puxty family name
Hi Keith I have a 'Family Name History' poster from the Historical Research Center. I am not sure how reliable it is but it tells you the following information:
Numerous field names and minor place names in England are derived from the common rustic belief in dwarfs, changelings, goblins, giants and dragons which demonstrates the strong hold superstition had in all parts of the country in the medieval period. The mischievous activities of Shakespeare's Puck in a Mid-Summer Night's Dream is well known, who was a fairy and merry wanderer of the night, "rough, knurly limbed, faun-faced, and shock pated, a very Shetlander among the gossamer-winged" fairies around him. Kipling's "Puck of Pook Hill" has long associated him with Sussex where there are five place names with this element including Pookhill, Pookreed, Poppets, earlier recorded as Poukeput, Puckscroft and most importantly Puckstye (goblin path) which has given rise to the surname Puxty. In the Middle Ages, local folklore believed that Sussex was goblin haunted to an extent without parallel elsewhere. To this day, the surname Puxty and its variants Puxtey, Puxtie and Puxtyth is associated with the county of Sussex, the neighbouring county of Kent, the city of London while a branch of the family emigrated north to Yorkshire. Early references include one Thomas Puxty who married Ann Waghorne in Wadhurst in Sussex in June 1674 while Elizabeth Puxtie married Richard Weston in Rotherfield in Sussex in December 1689. William Chambers Puxty, the son of Alexander and Mary Puxty was christened in West Malling in Kent in February 1753 and his brother Alexander was christened in November 1759. Elizabeth Puxty married George Carrick in Ticehurst in Sussex in February 1814.
THe poster also shows the coat of arms etc, I bought it at an air show of all places!
Hope this helps!
Lesley Shiner (nee Puxty)

Thank you so much for all the information you have sent to me - If you have a family tree I would be very interested to see where I fit into it. Unfortunately my father has passed away and being in NZ it is difficult to get this sort of information. Also if I could have a copy of the coat of arms - are you able to email a copy to me? Once again many thanks for your time. Regards Keith.
