My father's family are also from the Tottenham area, and my father John, had a brother Alf who would have been born in the late 20's / early 30's. I know that their father was a bargeman. Have you been able to obtain any information on your family in Tottenham that would show we are the same family - if we are let me know what blanks you have and I will try and fill them in as best I can.

I have received your message but am not sure it was meant for me - my Puxtys came from Blackfriars and we lived at the Elephant & Castle when I was younger. Neraly all of the Blackfriars family we have traced to a cemetary in Dulwich they all went to a Church in Southwark called Christchurch
Is there any connection to your Puxtys, my dads name was John and his fathers name was Henry and my dads uncle was called Peter Puxty

I've heard similar said, though others say that it is a holy name associated with a tribal connection implying that "Puxty is the man who carries the sacred emblem before the tribe". In English folklore a corner of a field within each village was put aside for the Puck.It was never touched, left to run wild. The belief being if you disturbed the puck it would wreak revenge on you but if you left it alone it would leave you in peace. The sty is literally the entrance to the field. Thus the implication is that the name originates around the idea that we lived near the sty to the field in which the puck lived.I feel this is highly fanciful since the name is clearly Germanic in origin.Still, what for a bit of romance!!!

I had heard of the 'goblin-path' explanation, but I have also been told that the family originates in France and entered the UK in the York area around th etime of the Battle of the Roses. Has anyone else heard of this background information. Apparrently there is a university in the states looking at the origins of the Puxty family name. (All I know is that it's good to have a slightly unusual surname!)
