Hi There

I am interested in the name PUXTY in Ticehurst. My great great grandfather William WEEKES/WEEKS was married to a Mahala PUXTY, but I am unable to find her birth. However, On checking out the transcripts of Ticehurst parish records I found their Banns read on 16, 23 and 30th November 1848 but no subsequent marriage. There was an Ayly PUXTY (father Peter) who married a William WEEKES/WEEKS at Ticehurst in 1851 which is confirmed in St Caths Index (as it was called). Was Mahala and Ayly the same person??.

I would like to hear from any person connected with above. Reply to Roy in New Zealand. stamphinge@hotmail.com

TIA

Hi Roy,

On www.familysearch.org, there's a record of a William Weekes/Aley Puxty marriage which I think is the same as your Ayly. I haven't come across the name Mahala Puxty in any of my research so far. I have got another note of a Mary Puxty marrying Henry James Weekes in Ticehurst on 7/4/1866 - possibly the same family?

Hi Lesley

Many thanks for your post. My Ayly/Mahala PUXTY are a real mystery, even though I have checked variations of spelling.

My Great Grandmother was Elizabeth WEEKES/WEEKS according to the Census returns and her marriage/death certificates and she was born in 1851, however, my cousin said she was always refered to as Eliza!. Although different census returns showed several birth places, the 1891 and 1901 census confirmed it was Ticehurst.

Checking out the addresses in Farnborough, Kent, I established that she and some other Weekes/Weeks in the same household and nearby were born in Tonbridge/Tunbridge. On checking the 1861 census in these two area I discovered the Farnborough Family and all were born in Tonbridge except Lizza who was born in Ticehurst. The head of the family was William WEEKES born Hawkhurst with wife Mahala born in Ticehurst.
Prior to their likely marriage there was a William WEEKES staying with Peter PUXTY at Flimwell, just down the road from Ticehurst.

My Problem is, when was Elizabeth/Eliza/Lizza WEEKES actually born, was she baptised at a church other than the parish church, no record on BTS for Ticehurst.

If Ayly and Mahala are one and the same, several of the children were born before the marriage of William and Ayly.

Peter Puxty was a witness to their marriage. Very likely that Ayly was Peter's daughter!.

I am just hoping that someone has researched the Puxtys and has more information regarding the wedding above.

Hi Marcus

You are the only one that has ever replied to my PUXTY post - many thanks.

Firstly I should explain that the name HORWOOD is my non de plume, in fact my mother's maiden name. Secondly I use an hotmail address to reduce "spam", they seem to do a good job of deleting it, or moving it to the trash can.

Now to Family History.

For many years I endeavoured to find the birth of my great grandmother Elizabeth WEEKES who showed on many census returns as being born in different places, one being Ticehurst in West Sussex. Aftr tears of research I eventually located her birth in Ticehurst and her registered name as Lizzy (aka. Lisa and Elizebeth) WEEKES. Lizzy was born in 1852 to William WEEKES and Mahala (aka.Margaret and Aley) PUXTY. Mahala was known under three Christian names which appeared common down the line to myself.

Mahala was born C 1818 to Peter PUXTY and Ann (aka.Nancy) ?????.

Peter PUXTY was born about 1791 and died 1862 at Ticehurst. Ann (Nancy) died in 1854 at Flimwell.

Peter was the son of Samuel PUXTY and Betty CHANTLER could be CHANDLER.

Are we related?. Your PUXTY ancestry would be appreciated.

Where do you live and what is your telephone number.

Hello,

I have been away from the message boards for a couple of years, working on the other end of the family tree! (daughter, now aged 21 months) and now have time to get back to this!

Samuel Puxty and Elizabeth Chantler are my 7greats grandparents, I am descended through their eldest son Samuel who married Sarah Winch. I was in contact with Carole Anderson, who is descended through their second son Peter who married Ann, (your branch?), so you might have some luck if you contact Carole, her email address will be on the message board somewhere! Carole had a copy of the marriage certificate for Samuel and Elizabeth which she copied for me, on it Samuel actually signed his own name, which is pretty good for 1789!

hoping to get back in touch with Carole soon, when toddler allows! (if you're reading this, Carole - hope you're well!).

hope this helps!

Lesley

Hi Lesley

Many thanks for your message. I was in touch with Carole a couple of years ago, I am also a descendant of Peter and Ann from their daughter Mahala aka Margaret aka Aley who married William WEEKES. Over the last couple of months I have been in touch with a couple of others who are researching the Puxty/ Weekes families, but can not find a direct association as yet. Of course the Ticehurst area was swarming with WEEKS/WEEKES and PUXTYS so I guess our connection will be in the early 1700's or late 1600's.

You and I Lesley are proven cousins, but I have not worked out the exact relationship as yet. If you give me your current E-mail address I will send you a couple of recent descendancy charts, I am reluctant to attach them to this as they could be used for a commercial advantage.

Incidentally where do you live?.

Please use sylroy@ihug.co.nz for further communication.

I have been researching the Puxty family in behalf of a friend whose maiden name was Puxty. In her tree there was a Mahala who married William Weeks on 5th October 1851. She had 3 sons (William b: 1845, Peter b: 1848 and George b: 1850) before the marriage but they changed their names.

According to my information Mahala was born in 1826 and she was the 6th child of Peter (b: 1791) and Nancy (b: 1791). Her grandparents were Samuel Puxty (b: ? d: 1801) and Elizabeth Chantler (b: 1755 d: 1832).

I have found lots of information on the Puxtys and if you wish to know what else I have found, don't hesitate to ask.

Hi Mandy,
I was doing a general search on the name Mahala Puxty as my Great-grandfather Alfred Puxty had a yonger sister called Mahala (born in Kent 1885)
I see the information you found was for an entirely different one but as it's such an unusual name I wondered if there was any connection.
My cousin has a full Puxty family tree going back to James Puxty (b 1784) and Ann Shoobridge (aka Shoobrigde b 1792) married in 1810.
There are lots of Alfreds and Fredericks, my dad is Fred his twin brother is Alfred.
I'd be interested in sharing some information especially to find out about any Mahala links if your interested in doing so?
Kind Regards
Robert

My Puxty research was actually done on behalf of a neighbour of mine whose maiden name was Puxty. If you let me know your e-mail address I can send you lots of info e.g a tree as a PDF, a document where I put the BMD and census information and a spreadsheet that I use to check I don't miss anything. Let me know if you want any or all of my stuff. I can also pass your e-mail address to her so that you may communicate directly.

All the best.
