Jodie,
I'm pretty sure your father, Joe is my cousin. My dad's name was Steve Putanko. I haven't been back to my search for years, but decided to start again. I don't have much as yet, but hope to obtain more.

How about an ALL site for research in Slovakia to get you going. www.iabsi.com/gen/public
SK's phone book is listing PUTANKOVA (OVA is a female) in city of Kosice's phone book. www.zoznamst.sk
7 PUTANKOs came thru Ellis Island. www.ellisislandrecords.org

Happy New Year.
It would seem that Ancestry did not notify you about my query. Did you find a place of birth?

Your welcome.
Was your John/Janos naturalized citizen?
Did he have social security numbers? http://ssdi.rootsweb.com
Did he fill out a Draft Registration Form?
Did he marry in US? Have you found the family on 1930 census? Useful information on it like Na-naturalized, Al-alien, Pa-first paper.
Your ancestor could have come thru Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia or Canada's port and not just Ellis Island.

Could this be him?
PUTANKO Janos arr. in 1906 from Matejocz (Matejovce, Spis region, Slovak Republic) going to brother PUTANKO Jozsef, Mt. Pleasant, Pa.
If Matejovce is the ancestral village then LDS-Mormons site is listing church records, which you can order and gather ancestral information.
Look in www.radixforum.com Surname Index PUTANKO was found in 1891 in Kassa (Kosice, SK), Iglo (Spisska Nova Ves, SK), Budapest (HU) and Belovar
PUTANKOVA (OVA a female ending ) in Kosice's phone book.

Thanks for the info. I did notice a Janos Putanko on my searches. Is there a site that publishes different names for i.e. John?
By the way, who are you? Are you just volunteering help?
