Israel & Lydia Pusey

I'm researching an Israel Pusey who died in Philadelphia on July 13, 1857. He was born approximately 1771 in Maryland and lived in Chester County, Pennsylvania in 1850 with his wife Lydia (1779-1854). I'm tracing the family through their daughter Eliza Pusey (1805-1866) who married Osborn Wright (1808-1886), a shoe maker from New Jersey who settled in Philadelphia. Eliza was born in New Castle, Delaware so the family must have connections there as well. If anything here rings a bell, please reply. Thanks.

I am researching this family as well. I have no proof but a hunch that Lydia may have been a certain Lydia Springer born January 1781 in Delaware, who is my relative. According to 1850 census, Lydia Pusey was born 1781; in 1840 and 1830 censuses her age category would have her born between 1780 and 1790, so I believe that her death and burial record in Philadelphia giving her age as 75 may have been slightly exaggerated by two years. Do you have any clues as to who Lydia may have been? I know of four children - Eliza (b. c. 1805), Joshua J. (b. c. 1807/8), Cordelia (b. c. 1812) and Israel (b. c. 1818). Do you know of other children? Also, do you know who Israel's parents were? There is an Israel Pusey in Cecil Co., Md., 1790 census, but this would seem to be too early for Israel who married Lydia to be an adult, so perhaps his father? Or was his father named Joshua? Any clues would be wonderful! Thanks, John Sheftall, Columbus, GA

Hi Mack!

I think you gave me more information than I can give you. Until now, I only knew of Eliza as one of their daughters. I knew nothing else about the rest of the family. I was intrigued by the name "Joshua J" being in the family. One of Eliza's grandchildren was a "Joshua J P Wright". If I read this correctly, it's very likely that he was "Joshua J Pusey Wright" as family names frequently got passed down as middle names in this family.

I have been unable to go back any further generations. How did you find the names of the other children? Were there other documents you found?

I've been puzzling this Israel Pusey for a few years while researching the Quaker Puseys of Chester County, Penna. My theory is that the Israel Pusey b. about 1776 who m. Lydia was probably the son of the Israel Pewsy (sic) who m. Sarah Newberry 3-5-1756 at Old Swede's Church in New Castle (city). Siblings were probably John E., Joshua, Judith, and Sarah. Israel and Sarah appear to have moved about and just across the borders of Cecil Co. (MD), Chester Co. (PA) and New Castle Co. (DE).

I don't know of the elder Israel's parents but I suspect he is likely descended from the Pusey family that settled in the 1600's in the Norfolk area and moved to the Maryland Eastern Shore in the mid-1600's in response to the Calverts promise of land grants there for those who would agree to be loyal Maryland citizens. The Pewsy/Pewsey spelling is not uncommon among this Pusey family up through the early 19th century and very rare otherwise. I cannot rule out the possibility that Israel emigrated directly from England and his line is independent of the two larger American Pusey lineages.

My research has recently established (conclusively) that the Lydia Springer (b. 1781, Delaware) I was tracing did not marry Israel Pusey. She was in fact the wife of Thomas Baldwin of New Castle Co., Del., living a long life and dying in Mill Creek Hundred, Del., in 1872, aged 91. I had only speculated that Israel Pusey's wife might be this Lydia Springer and, in fact, she was not and I therefore has no insight as to Mrs. Lydia Pusey's maiden name.
