I am Richard the grandson of Joseph and Vera Puchinsky of Bayonne, NJ. This message is relevant to any of my paternal grandparents' descendents.
After on and off searching I have found my grandparents' immigration information at the Ellis Island Records web site
http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/. The names used there are Osip Puczinsky and Vera Puczinska. One can search data on his name by just typing in his name as given, but to find her name you will need to use the wild card character *, that is, Vera P*zinska. There will be photos of the ship manifest entry for each person which can be downloaded for free. They got married overseas and came over separately, they name each other on their respective entries.
My grandfather Osip who I knew as Joseph was born and lived in Ustje, Russia (now in Latvia). He sailed from "Libau, Posen, Prussia, Germany" on Sept 30, 1913 on the "Kursk" arriving at Ellis Island on Oct 12, 1913. He was age 29 with height 5 ft 5 inches with blond hair and blue eyes just like my father Michael. He went to join a friend F. Wolk living at 1370 70th St. Brooklyn. Note: The "Kursk" was scrapped in 1939.
My grandmother Vera was born and lived in Kasanna, Russia (I don't know where this place is now) with her father Andrzej Franiak. She also spent some time in Ustje. She sailed from Hamburg on June 12, 1914 on the "President Lincoln" arriving on June 23. She was age 20 with height 5 ft 5 inches with brown hair and blue eyes and went to live at 10 Lewis St. in New York. Note: The "President Lincoln" was sunk in the Atlantic by a German U-boat on May 31, 1918.
In the 1920 census my grandfather is listed as "Joe Pochinski" with wife "Mary" and kids Nicholas, "Sergie", and Helen. My father Michael was born in March after that census was taken. Their address was 382 Avenue C, Bayonne, NJ. Their listed ages and arrival dates are consistent with the Ellis Island record, so I do not consider the fact that my grandmother is referred to as Mary rather than Vera a problem. I have not been able to find my grandparents and their childern in the 1930 census.
