Re: John P. Purrington, Washington County, Maine

The above genealogy is not entirely correct. I no longer believe that Maria Elisa Purrington was wife of Jerome Moore. (Look at their marriage date). It is possible that Jerome Moore did marry an Eliza Purrington that may have been an older daughter of John P. Purrington, and had left the family prior to the 1850 census.

Kevin
kpickard@ctesc.net

Anyone know of a George Purrington or Purrinton and his wife Elizabeth Woolley of Otsego and Oneida Co's NY early 1800's?

George Purrinton (Purin-g-ton) born September 11 1771 or 1773 married to Elizabeth Woolley or Woolsey on November 06 1803 (where?) and he died on 12 Jun 1847 in Bridgewater, Oneida County, New York. His wife Elizabeth was born 11 Jul 1779 (Dutchess County?) and died 10 Jun 1848 in Bridgewater, Oneida County, New York.

They had children:
1. Peter Purington 17 Aug 1804 who died 11 Sep 1812.

2. Abigail Purrington 04 Jun 1806 died 1852.

3. Elizabeth Ann Purington 15 Jan 1810 died 16 Aug 1842.

4. Lydia Purington 28 Apr 1812 died 28 Jul 1842.

5. George Purington 26 Jul 1814 died 01 Nov 1884 Vandalia, Jasper County, Iowa. He married to Jane Marinda McMillen on 01 Dec 1842 in either Indiana or Illinois.

6. Betsy Purington 01 Mar 1819 died 25 Jun 1902 Vandalia, Jasper County, Iowa. She married to William Blaisdell 04 Aug 1863 in Jasper Co., Iowa. He died in the Civil War on 25 Aug 1862 in Alton, Illinois due to disease.

We are TRYING to find out any information (genealogical, tax, or land records, even cemetery informtion) for George Purrinton or Purington's parents.

We *suspect* the parent MAYBE be related to Joseph Purrinton or Purington and Abigail (nee: Locke) of Chichester, Merrimack County, New Hampshire whose marriage intentions were record in Rye, Rockingham County, NH December 28th, of 1759. But nothing connects them to this particular NH couple (as yet).

Anyone out there KNOW of these people or can help us connect the genealogical dots. Were they Quakers?

Tristram Purington/Purinton

This is quite a long message- I believe I have it narrowed down to Tristram descending from Humphrey Purrington and Thankful Harding and related to David Purington (married to Chastina Messenger, b 17 Aug 1798 in NY to Joseph Purington and Margeret Hunter)- part of my belief extends from several facts-

A. David and Tristram lived next to each other most of their lives which included moving from NY to WI at approximately the same time, except for the time Tristram was in Brighton, Washington County, IA it appears that they never lived more than 15 miles from each other so my guess is that they were brothers, however I cannot verify any other children of Joseph and Margaret-

B. I also found an old newspaper article indicating the Tristam was helping his brother in Cuba NY however the spelling of the names was so mangled that I haven't been able to locate it again- the article was around 1815-1840, I think 1817/1827 but I'm not sure- there was mention of a patent but I don't recall if it was a land patent or some other type

C. There is evidence of mental illness along this line- Capt James Scales Purington murdered his entire family except one son who escaped in 1806; the history of Washington County IA notes that Tristram became "deranged"

so I'm hoping what I have can give someone else a jump start and we can go from there- if you want any of the actual records, let me know, except for the newspaper article which if I ever happen upon again, I'm having laminated

Deacon Hezekiah Purington b 1674 and Mary Scammon b 1682
have a child -Deacon Humphrey Purington b 1703 –

Humphrey marries Thankful Harding - their children include James b 1742 who is married first to Priscilla Harding then to Silence Winchell (I could not find children with Silence), Joshua who marries Anna Burrell, and David Purington b Sept 9 1731 who marries Mary Scales

Children for James and Priscilla include
1.Priscilla Purington b: 6 Oct 1764 in Lincoln Co.,Maine
2. infant Purington b: 12 Mar 1766 in Lincoln Co.,Maine
3. Rachel Purington b: ABT 1768 in Lincoln Co.,Maine
4. Susannah Purington b: 26 Jan 1770 in Sagadahoc Co., ME
5. Rebecca Purington b: 19 May 1772 in Sagadahoc Co., ME
6. Fannie Purinton b: 21 Nov 1775 in Sagadahoc Co., ME
7. James Purington b: 25 Feb 1777 in Sagadahoc Co., ME
8. infant Purington b: 21 Feb 1779 in Sagadahoc Co., ME
9. Nathaniel Purington b: 10 Jan 1780 in Sagadahoc Co., ME
10. Ezekiel Purington b: 14 Jul 1782 in Sagadahoc Co., ME

Children of David and Mary Scales include
1. Cpt James Scales Purington- marries Elizabeth Clifford
Kills 7 of his children, wife, and self in 1806 Augusta, Kennebec ME -Brother Hezekiah comes to tend affairs - only one son survives, James b 1789
2. Hezekiah b Oct 21 1761
3. Hannah
4. William b. February 2, 1767
5. Elihu b Apr 18, 1769
6. Thankful b Aug 10, 1771

Child of Joshua and Anna Burrel include
1. Joseph who marries Margaret Hunter Jan 17 1795 Saratoga NY at Reformed Dutch Protestant Church in Schuylerville

Joshua and Anna are the parents of David b Aug 17 1798 New York

Tristram's documented locations with the spelling variations noted:
War of 1812 enlisted in Capt Joseph Towle’s Company (per adjutant general of state of NH – Lucretia was close but not quite on her pensioner’s request- note there are also two pension records for Tristam- one correcting the spelling of his name from Trustriam Purington to Tristram Purinton – 4 regiment sias’ new Hampshire milia)
1817 Tristam is married in Weare NH
1820 census shows Trestam Purrington in Lisle NY (Broome County)
1830 census shows Tristram Purrington in Truxton NY (Cortland County)
1840 census shows T Purrington in Cuba NY (Allegany County)
1844-45 moved to Washington IA per Tristram’s daughter’s obituary
1852 census shows Tristram Purrington in Washington County IA
1855 census shows Triston Perrington in Marion, Grant Co WI (this is also about the time he received his land grant in Mineral Point, Grant Co, WI – I believe Marion is a type-o as Marion is not in Grant Co WI)
1860 census Tristriam Perington in Grant Co WI
1875 census Tristian Purrington in Hickory Grove WI

David Purington b in NY in 1797 (he’s a little harder to make sure he’s the correct one as his name is more common)
1820 census David Purrington Stillwater, Saratoga, New York
1826 Madison County NY (adjacent to Cortland County)
near Allegany County NY approximately 1827-1849- where his children are listed as being born
1840 D Purrington (Puerington) in Cuba NY (Allegany County)
1850 census David Purrington Brooklyn WI (15 miles from Mineral Point WI)
1860 census David Peeryington Brooklyn, Green County WI
Purrington of Bristol Connecticut being indexed as Currington

I am a volunteer who is currently working on indexing the 1940 census and I came across Alden Purrington and family of Bristol, Connecticut, as one of the names I indexed. I do not know if he is in anyone's tree or not, but I thought I would put this out because a mistake is being made. After submitting my work, his name was changed to Currington. I have no recourse to change it. I have contacted the LDS before about these kinds of situations and they tell me what is done is done. Just thought I would let you know just in case you will be looking for him once the census has been fully indexed and released.

Monica Primus

Have any of you Purringtons out there done DNA testing? I had my husband do it, but when I tried to enter it in my tree, it was recorded as mine, so I erased it. I found out what to do to correct that, but it is complicated and I haven't done it yet. If any of you have the results of this test, please let me know.

Hi Loraine,

I was mostly responding to Gary Pitlo, he seemed to really want a response. My tree is Purington/Dix/Foster/Kittredge. I've come accross your tree often in my searches. In the beginning I sent for documents but then I found family histories and there were just too many people so now I use only the internet also. My line is George Puddington/Lt.John Purrington/Joshua/George/Joshua/John L./John G.,etc. A now good friend near Epping researched for me and found Joshua's (1672) will and a lot of other records. They were Quakers until John L. so its hard to find many records. They went from Maine to New Hampshire, then John L. went to Massachusetts. They were in Minnesota for about thiry years and then went to Idaho. They were really prolific in Epping, New Hampshire so there are a lot of Puringtons that originated there.

Thanks very much for your response,

Sue Purington

Indeed - but having the first name Tristram (or Tristam) certainly helps to pluck them out of the crowd, aside from the fact that Tristram married a woman named "Lucrecia." What a silly hobby this is - when we are just happy that people aren't named "John Smith."

Hello,
I am also a Purington researcher, and looked your ancestors up in my database. I found that Turner's father, Washington, was a son of Thankful Snow and Humphrey Purington III. This is also my line. I am a descendant of Humphrey III's brother, Hezekiah, and his wife, Isabel Smalley. If you would like more info on your branch, please contact me.

Also -- I came across a patent for grape crushing machine today, on ebay, that was invented by your Turner C (Coombs?) Purington. I saved the pertinent info for you, if you would like to see it. There are no bids on it at this point.

Hello,
Do you have any info about the Puringtons who moved to North Carolina from Maine? My 3rd great grandfather was
David Purington, born in Maine somewhere between 1804 and 1807. His wife, Jane (Bradshaw?) was from North
Carolina. David was about 38, and Jane about 33 when they married, so perhaps this was a 2nd marriage for one or
both. They migrated to Missouri between 1844 and 1850, then to Wakarusa, Kansas in about 1854. The 1850 Missouri
census shows that their first 2 children were born in North Carolina (though the KS 1860 census shows them born in
Missouri). Their children were David H., Sarah J, Simeon, Fillmore, and Mary (who died young). I have been trying to find
out who David Purington's parents were for a loonnnggg time--

I am trying to find the parents of a David Purington born between 1804-1807 in Maine. He married Jane Bradshaw in Cherokee County, North Carolina in 1843. They migrated to Missouri within a year, then to Douglas Co. KS by 1855. David was about 38, and Jane about 33 when they married, so perhaps this was a 2nd marriage for one or both.
The 1850 Missouri census shows that their first 2 children were born in North Carolina (though the KS 1860 census shows them born in Missouri).
David,
I've read with interest the posts between you and Jim Stafford regarding Joseph Purrington. I am researching Samuel Purrington who died in 1847, leaving wife Betsey and children Phebe, Mary E., Harriet, Joseph (b. 1835) and Henry White Purrington.

The Rochester Vital Records state:
Samuel Purrington, married, carpenter, son of Joseph and Patience Parker, fever, died Sept. 5, 1847, age 65 years and 6 months. (Tombstone reads died at age 66 years and 6 months.)

Could there be two Patience Parkers? THis one would have been born ca. 1760 or earlier. Maybe the man who married Patience Parker was named Joseph Samuel or Samuel Joseph??

Jim,
I am researching the Joseph that you referred to in the Vital Records of Rochester. (Samuel Purrington who died in 1847, with parents Joseph and Patience Parker.) From reading the posts between you and David, it appears that he is referring to a different Joseph.

Have you researched this further? It seems like the vital records would be accurate here.
After a trip to the library tonight, I found vital records from the town of Rochester that state that Samuel Purrington who died in 1847 was the son of Joseph Purrington and Patience Parker. Samuel married Elizabeth (Betsey) Hammond in 1827.

Any info on this family is appreciated.

Hi,

My Puringtons are from Epping, Rockingham County. So far I've gotten back to 1723 and hit a brick wall. In the 1790, 1800 and 1810 censuses they are listed as Purinton, Puddington and Purington. I do have a Webster about fifth or sixth great grandmother. I don't recognize any of the others. I know that all of the Puringtons, etc. came from England, some say George Purington, b. 1723 came from England directly, I believe they go further back, especially since they were listed as Puddington which is the original name.

Hope you see this,

Sue P.

I also have info connecting the Epping line back to the original immigrant, George Puddington. I wonder if we are connected. I know a lot of Puringtons stayed in Epping for a long time before some moved on. I would love to compare notes with anyone.

Sue Purington

It's way after the fact but I have come into some information so thought I would share. Anna Purrington, dau. Joshua who was the grandson of the original immigrant George Puddington, was married to Jacob Osborn according to her father's will. Joshua (b.1672) was married in Amesbury, Massachusetts to both Damaris Jones (1710)and Judith Nichols (1744). He owned land in both Salisbury, Massachusetts and Hampton Falls, New Hampshire in 1709, was a witness in Exeter, New Hampshire in 1702. The border between Massachusetts and New Hampshire was very fluid then and the two provinces were under the same government so who knows where Anna was born, at least I don't. I don't find any record of her birth in Salisbury records or in the records of Danvers, Massachusetts which many family trees cite as her birthplace.

If anyone would like info I might have, I'm willing to share.

Sue P.

He was referred to by all of these names at one time or another. Especially looking for his parents Sarah G.(don't know maiden name) and ?Laris, his father(from John G.'s death certificate, info given by son who didn't know his grandfather), the men often went by their middle names. I have most info from 1860 forward. Can't find John G.'s birth record, although it is stated in death certificate, Civil War pension file, etc. Also don't have marriage record to Cornelia Dix in 1866-68 in Steele County, Minnesota or their divorce record.

Also looking for lindaazevedo my second cousin once removed, per info in her postings.

I am following Tristram also now, as I believe he is in my tree. It appears he went to Iowa (from NY) in about 1840 or so, and then left there and went to Wisconsin, where he lived until he died. My line includes a Mary Lord Purington (or Purrington) who was from Washington Co., Iowa. The only parentage on Tristram that I have is William N. Purington, b. 1770, in Truxton, NY. Here's a question - why do all of the Census takers list him as "Purrington."

Hi again,

My grandmom's maiden surname was Purington, and not spelled with the two r's. I made a mistake. She was born May 24, 1909, and died March 1984. She came from Epping New Hampshire, rockland county. I'm looking to see how far back I can actually go with this line and those connected to it. I want to see what country it hails from. We also have Gilman, Boody, Bly, Webster, Shannon also in our family surnames. If anyone is connected to any of these please email me at miladykelgan@yahoo.com thank you!!

Re: Joseph Purrington, born ca 1836 in MA

I am interested in finding more information about the ancestors of the Joseph Purrington mentioned in your note. I have information and documents on the family from Joseph up to the present, I have nothing about them beyond Joseph. Part of one story I have says that Joseph was born in Mattapoisett, Mass, Dec. 2, 1838 (date may be wrong) into a ship building and seafaring family. Frances Hoag was born in England June 20, 1830. She was the daughter of a doctor and learned nursing. Her first husband was Dr. Miller, who later died at sea. Joseph was her second husband, whom she met in San Francisco, CA. Any information would be very much appreciated.
