Seeking information on my gggrandfather, William Purchase who likely resided in Swansea area just across the Bristol Channel from Barnstaple in North Devon.

William apparently served on the schooner Caroline which sank January 25, 1861. It appears that William Purchase lost his life in the sinking of the Caroline.

Any information on Purchase family in Swansea and information about William Purchase of Swansea is welcomed.

If you search the 'Cambrian Index' of the Swansea local newspaper at www.swansea.gov.uk/cambrian you will find reference to a Charles PURCHASE family in Neath, a Mr PURCHASE at the Glamorgan Bank, Swansea and a W PURCHASE at Swansea Grammar School in 1859. This is a court case in 1860:
25 May 1860 SWANSEA POLICE:WILLIAM PURCHASE CHARGED WITH DESERTING THE SHIP CAROLINE. P5
There was a Frederick Charles PURCHASE mentioned several times including 1864

The Caroline seems to have been a schooner, registered in Neath in the 1850s, possibly damaged 1859 and there was one survivor of the wreck; 22 February 1861 BENJ.EVANS,ABLE SEAMAN,REPORTS RE COLLISION OF THE CAROLINE AND THE ORWELL.5 DEAD. P5. 25 January 1861 THE CAROLINE,OF LLANELLY,CAPT.RICHARDS,RUN DOWN BY THE ORWELL.MANY LOST.P5. There may have been several ships of this name.

When I started family history research there was someone in Swansea area researching a PURCHASE family in Swansea area from Puddletown in Dorset. This was in the days of snail mail so it might take me a while to locate details.

If you are not local to Swansea and want help finding these press reports, get back to me.

Jeff,

Thank you for the good information. I'm located on the west coast of the USA, so I'm far from local...and I would welcome any additional information you are able to share. My posting is a follow-up from your generously shared information of two years ago, where you theorized about William Purchase of Swansea as likely father of William Henry Comer Purchase born Sept. 5, 1859 to Jane Comer of High Bray (Barnstaple Region) of Devon. You suggested that my inability to find a Purchase-surname in Barnstaple (who might have fathered William Henry)might be expanded to occasional visitors to the area arriving via ship from Swansea. So this posting is an effort to track down more information on that potential father in Swansea (per your previous suggestion). Thanks for that help a few years ago -- it made so much sense in light of the dead end that I was encountering by looking more local. And now I'm seeking any threads to corroborate your theory.

I have been hearing about what seems to be a LOT of Purchase families in Great Britain and was very curious to find out just how many branches of Purchase families stemmed out of Great Britain. I am a Purchase but by marriage and I and my husband are both Americans; I had never before heard of the name "Purchase" before I met my husband in high school in California. (My husband was born in Iowa; his father (Purchase)was born in Nebraska where his family resided back to his GGGrandfather who was born in New York.)

My mother-in-law and I share an interest in genealogy and I am proud to say that she is a very excellent amateur genealogist but she has never been able to get further back
than Thomas Purchase b. 12 Mar 1797; d. 17 Jun 1843 and bur. Shepards Settlement Cemetery, Skaneateles, NY. She believes that he is Thomas II but has no proof. Both my mother-in-law and I are eager to get this Thomas back to England but so far no luck. He does have a sister named Sarah Purchase who married Alvin Burroughs.

Thomas married Hannah Burroughs on 14 Feb 1821; Hannah is buried at Shepards Settlement Cemetery, Skaneateles, NY. Thomas's second wife was Hannah Scriber, b. 12 Jan 1805. Hannah Scriber died on 20 Apr 1854 and is buried at Shepards Settlement Cemetery,Skaneateles, NY. Thomas and Hannah Scriber had three children: Esther A. Purchase, b. 1837, NY; Sarah O. Purchase, b. 14 Dec 1841, NY
and Mattie Purchase. Esther and Sarah died in Nebraska.
Thomas and his first wife Hannah Burroughs had 7 children together, including my husband's GGGGrandfather Evlin Purchase, b. New York on 24 Mar 1822; he died in Elk City, Nebraska.

We haven't seemed to have run into as many Purchases in America as are in England.

Any suggestion on how to get our Purchase family into Great Britain or overseas-- or to find Thomas Purchase's parents?

Thanks very much.

Kathleen, I share your frustration at reaching a temporary deadend for your search. Be of good cheer, I'm sure something will emerge for you.

There was clearly a strong contingent of Purchase family that settled in New York several generations before my Purchase came over in 1880. In fact, as I recall there is a town Purchase, NY. I've not researched your NY Purchase family, but I know that they come up quite often during my own efforts. The best I can say in summary is that my Purchase of Devon region of England were clearly not related to the Purchases in NY, because my Purchase ancestors were dirt poor, and the Purchases of New York were people of means back in the early 1800's. If my ancestors had been related, they would have been out of Devon and on your ancestor's doorsteps in a New York minute (so to speak). Sorry that I can't be of more help.

>>fact, as I recall there is a town Purchase, NY.<<

Yes! After some lengthy investigation of this city, I found out that it was called "Purchase" New York because it was part of a land purchase! You know, like the Lousiana Purchase...

>>because my Purchase ancestors were dirt poor, and the Purchases of New York were people of means back in the early 1800's.<<

That's interesting...

And *thank you* for your sympathy!

You probably already know this but the surname Purchase is from being the King's purchasers so were indeed involved in money!

My husband ran into a client with the last name of Purkis and discovered that their names stemmed from the same root; his wife had a huge Family Tree book which includes both Purchases and Purkises.

Don't know where in England our Thomas Purchase b. about 1722 was born. He supposedly was the son of Thomas Purchase - nothing known of him.
Thomas 1722 married Elsjen Beatie (sometimes seen as Baite Thomas). He had two known sons - Robert and Phillip. Phillip married Rebecca Conklin. Robert (my ancestor) born 1753 in New York and died about 1859 (supposedly at age 106) was married three times - Elizabeth Abbott, Elizabeth Wilson, & Eliza Waterman. By his first marriage he had three children - My Nancy Purchase born about 1790 in Warren, Herkimer Co., N. Y. married Stephen Dunwell of Stonington Connecticut. They both died in Geagua Co., Ohio.

Hi Leslie,
Would you have in your notes any information on a Charles Purchase that ended up in Livingston County NY. He is listed on the 1820 Federal Censaus as living in the town of Sparta and apparently died prior to 1850. He was married to Elizabeth "Betsy" Blake, d/o Jesse Blake of Livonia, same county. Their daughter Martha F. Purchase married Daniel Pickard also of Sparta - eventually West Sparta.

Most of the resources are on genealogy.com which if you have ancestry.com you have access to that one also. Thomas Purchase and George Way his brother in law came together to America and were granted a land patent in 1632. Quite a bit of information on this line in the Pejepscot Purchase and settlements 1605-1714 Chapter 2. Chapter 4 is the Period of the Indian Wars 1675-1760 and they are mentioned in this also.
Also found that Thomas Purchase 1577-1678 son of Oliver Purchase and Tomazine Harris was born in Dorcester, Dorset, England. Died in Essex Co., Massachusetts at 101 years of age. His first wife was George Way's sister but I've not found what her name was. There is extensive information on the supposed "lady of questionable character" who became his second wife - Mary Grove. Supposedly she was quite the lady and was the consort of Sir Christopher Gardiner who called her his cousin. Gardiner's wife called her a "harlot". At any rate Gardiner had some difficulties with the officials in the Americas and was deported - Thomas Purchase rescued the fair damsel Mary Grove and made her his wife. Some of this was also posted online on the rootsweb gedcoms at worldconnect.rootsweb.com copied from the early records of Maine and the Genealogical Diction of the first settlers of New England. If you use the genealogy.com website you will find many records regarding Thomas Purchase or Oliver Purchase... these can be downloaded and printed out. Maine & New Hampshire Early Settlers and Pioneers of Maine... Chronicles of the first planters of Massachusetts Bay... The Essex Antiquarian... the Settlement of Boston Bay, the Antinomian Controversy... and lastly the Pilgrim Republic, about the colony of New Plymouth... just a few more references.
Only wish I could find such resources for my BARKER lines.
