Livingston County, NY - PURCHASE
I am trying to find information on my GGG Grandmother, Charlotte J. (Purchase) Griswold. She was born 1 Jul 1821 and died in Conesus, NY 9 Mar 1906. She was married to Granger Griswold. I have a few pages from an old family bible which bear the names of Harvey Purchase (died 26 April 1837) and Corydon Purchase (died 26 January 1890 or 96). Logic is suggesting to me that Harvey Purchase is Charlotte and Corydon's father. He is listed in the 1830 Census in Conesus as having 5 children in the household. 1 male aged 10-15 yrs, 3 females under 5, 1 female 5-10yrs. Charlotte and Corydon would have been approx. 9-10 yrs old at the time.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Livingston County, NY - PURCHASE
I have a Harvey Purchase in my Data base but he was born in 1879 -- in either New York or Nebraska. (The family moved from Cayuga Co., NY to Omaha, NE. ) He was my husband's Grandfather's brother; my husband's Grandfather, born in Omaha, NE was Samuel James Purchase, b. 1880. Other siblings were: Helen J. Purchase, b. 1874 and Ernest Purchase, b. 1875. Their parents were Thomas James Purchase, b. in NY on 28 Aug 1853 and Emma/Emily A. Benton, b. 03 Jun 1852 in Michigan (possibly Wisconsin). I have had a lot of people ask me if Charlotte Purchase was in my family-- I just don't have enough information. (I work more on my family.) You might try rootsweb.com both under SURNAMES and LOCALITY as well as WorldConnect Project. Kathleen Hamler Purchase LPurch6636@aol.com

Re: Livingston County, NY - PURCHASE
Hi Kim, I'm also in search of Purchase ancestors. My 2nd greatgrandmother was Martha F Purchase, d/o Charles and Betsy Blake Purchase and w/o Daniel L. Pickard of W. Sparta, Livingston Co, NY. I'm having trouble connecting them with anyone who came before them. In Oak Ridge cemetery near Livonia NY there are the graves of Charles Purchase, his wife Martha F Purchase, both born ca 1750 and died ca 1830 (I was just there last summer and wrote the information down but don't have it here now) a small headstone with the initials SP (probably an infant with no date) and the graves of Harvey Purchase and Sabra Purchase, both died ca 1836. These are all together in a row. There was a Charles Purchase living near Springfield Mass that married a Martha Ferre in 1776. They were still there as late as 1800 but could have easily come west as thousands of New England Yankees did post 1800.I'm not sure how many Charles and Martha F.'s there can be without some sort of relationship to each other. There was also a Charlotte Purchase (b.1784) that married a Stephen Thornton in Flemming, Cayuga Co NY. To make this more convoluted, my Martha F. had a sister Pamelia (1817-1889) that also lived in Flemming All are buried in Flemming Hill Cemetery. For whatever reasonthe Purchases liked the same names. Dan Pickard and Martha Purchase had a daughter named Charlotte and I have an aunt also named Charlotte. I do know that your Charlotte isn't immediately related to my line. I have Betsy Blake Purchase's will. It lists all her children but there isn't a Charlotte mentioned. These folks all seem to congregate in family groups but the task is to sort them out.I hope this hasn't confused you too much and if you have more to add please let me know. I'll also pass along the cemetery dated for Chas and Martha F if you are interested. Bill Pickard

Re: Livingston County, NY - PURCHASE
Bill,
This is actually great info for me! I have to double check dates when I get home, but in my bible pages, a line was drawn from Harvey Purchase to Sabra Hubbard, so probably this is the same Harvey & Sabra whose graves you found. My thought is that Harvey & Sabra are the parents of both Charlotte and Corydon Purchase. I know that Corydon had a son named Charles H (Harvey?), who, if memory serves, also had a son named Charles born around 1900. Maybe???

Re: Livingston County, NY - PURCHASE
According to my bible records, Sabra Hubbard, who appears to have been Harvey Purchase's wife, was born February 1, 1799 and died December 13, 1836. Harvey Purchase died April 26, 1837.

Re: Livingston County, NY - PURCHASE
Hi Kim, Those are the dates I recollect on the headstones. I remember that one was broken and only the death date could be read. Unfortunately I misplaced the notebook I used to record the other dates. It will turn up I hope. I wish I could connect these purchases with the bunch from Massachusettes because there are good genealogies for them, but I can't. At the same time how many Charles and Martha F Purchases can there be out there? Also note that there are Purchase clans at Spafford in Onondaga County and near Herkimer at about the same time. All I can say is they liked the name Charles. BP

Re: Livingston County, NY - PURCHASE
Hi Kim, I found the information I had misplaced. As for Harvey and Sabra there is nothing else that you don't have. Charles Purchase's headstone reads November 1828 - 77 years. That would be a birth date of about 1751. Martha F.'s headstone reads May 1827 - 71 years. Her birthyear would be about 1756. Regarding the Charles and Martha F. Purchase of W.Springfield Mass.: Charles was born in June 1749 and Martha Ferre(y) in September 1755. They were married in 1776. Two Charles Purchase's show up in the 1810 W. Springfield Federal census. The first household has 1 male 45+, 1 female 45+ and 1 male 16-26. There is also a Charles Jr. household with 1 male 16-26 and 1 female 16-26. It's possible, but I don't know how probable, that the first household is the Charles and Martha buried in Livonia and the 16-26 male in their household was Harvey. Perhaps Charles Jr.'s wife died the whole bunch moves to Livingston County and Charles Jr. is my Charles Purchase (b. ca 1794) that married Betsy Blake in 1818. This would make Charles Sr and Martha in their mid 30's when they had Charles Jr. and Harvey. I don't know why they would wait 20 years to have children but there was a lot of child mortality in those days and earlier children may have either died or moved on, possibly like the Charlotte Purchase of Cayuga County b ca 1784? The problem is that there is no proof but it might partially explain how your ancestor was named Charles Harvey. On the other hand in the 1880 Federal census I found the sons of Charles and Betsy Blake Purchase: Joshua Bradley Purchase of Sparta NY and P. (Pracklet) Blake Purchase of Leonidas Mich. Both list Mass as the birthplace of their father. Hmm, the plot thickens. All I can say is there is a lot of coincidence but no proof. In case we are distant cousins and we are related to the Charles Purchase of W. Springfield Mass. I'll attach a web site of their genealogy. Thanks.
