Hello
My name is Gerardo Puopolo and I' m a Phd student of Naples University that now is attending one year at the University of Arizona in Tucson. My italian hometown is Nocera Superiore in Campania, a little town close to Naples and Salerno.
It's very exciting to find on the net a lot of Puopolo. I have read few letters and I have understood that the most part of American Puopolo came from Puglia and Ariano Irpino that is in my region.
I like to see that there is an interest about our last name and I can give you a little help in understanding it. At first in ancient italian (until the 18th century) the word "puopolo" meant people and in the modern italian it was substitute by "popolo".
About our last name there is a story that is handed on by through generations by our grandfathers and so now I can tell uus this story. In 1647 in Naples there was a rebellion against the governor. This rebellion was headed by a fishman, named by the Naples people, Masaniello and among his friend there was a decayed nobleman to whom the people gave the nickname of O Puopolo, that is The People.
This is the little story that our grandfathers like to tell to us, I don't know if it is true but I like to think that our last name is linked to the freedom conquest of Naples people in the so far 16th century: however my familiy is starting to make a research in the time of our roots and about the story of our last name.
It's very wonderful to see my last name here in USA....I like it!!!
Un saluto a tutti i Puopolo
Best wishes to all USA Puopolo:)

My Great Grandmother was Valentina Puopolo from Nocera Superiore, Salerno. She married Andrea Bellesa (Bellezza in the US) and had 6 children. She became a US citizen through her husband. The daughter,Marie Immaculate was my Grandmother, my Father's (Howard Gay) Mother.

I just discovered the Bellezza family in Italy and would love to someday go to Italy and see these two towns and hopefully meet some family.

I hope you enjoy your time here in the U.S.
