No, our family never owned a meat packing plant. I do know there is another Kirk P living in Michigan so maybe it was his family.

My husbands grandmother was a Pontius from Ohio and I have a direct line of Pontius back to 1718.I was told the name was sapelled "Pontious" and pronounced Punches. There is a National Pontius Cemetary in Mifflenburg PA. I live in PA, but haven't gotten ther yet. My grandmother in law has more info than I do, she hasn't given it to me yet... please feel free to contact me if you are interested at stacie@helicon.net

Stacie,

Pontius is an old Norman name, possibly derived from a kingdom, in present day Northern Turkey, once ruled by Mithridates (a contemporary of Caesar and Pompey). The name Pontius arrived in Ireland in the wake of the Norman Invasion of the late 12th century. In time it was Anglicised to Punch/Punches. Other variations of the name include: Punchard, Pons, Ponce, Poyntz etc. The vast majority of people with the surname Punch, who still live in Ireland, are to be found in and around County Cork. Hope this is of some use.

Hi my name is David Pontious. I just spent 10 days in Indiana, Ohio and Kansas city. I am very interested about the National Pontious Cemetary. Could you please send me information on where it is and who typically is buried there?
My lineage is goes to Ohio in 1840 where my great, great grandfater johnn F. Pontious was born. He married Elizabeth Showalter. I can't find John's father. I have looked for him for months and months.
Thank you

David Pontious

David, where in Ohio was your John F. born? There were lots of Pontiuses in Ohio around 1840 and many were named John. The National Pontius Cemetery is back in Mifflinburg, Union County, Pennsylvania and the earliest John Pontius (Johannes) is buried there.

Stacie, my 6th great grandfather was Johannes (John) Pontius (Punches). Do you or anyone else know if his mother Anna Rosina Catherina Hauch is buried the the Pontius National Cemetery? Do have any stories about them?
