My mother-in law was a Ponsonby from Cressbrook. The family thought that Punchaby was a variant of Ponsonby. Unfortunately I don't know any more, nor have I found a connection.

Thanks for that Mark. I suppose it makes sense that the 2 names could be derived from one another - they're quite similar sounding.
I can trace my Punchabys back to 1692 with the birth of my 6 x great-grandfather Christopher. The family stayed around the Bakewell area, although there was a marriage in Hope in 1746. The line seems to peter out there at the moment, with a daughter getting married and losing the surname.
Thanks again,
Linda

Surnames: PUNCHABY, PHASEY, PHEASEY, FEASEY
I am researching my PHASEY, PHEASEY, FEASEY ancestors of BAKEWELL, DERBYSHIRE and have found an Eliza PUNCHABY, (daughter of Christopher or Cristofer? PUNCHABY). Eliza married Thomas PHEASEY on 20 November 1845 in Bakewell.

There was also a Jane PUNCHABY from Bakewell who married a PHASEY, PHEASEY, FEASEY ancestor.

Hope to hear from you ... Debbie (Australia)

Hi Debbie,
It sounds very much like your Punchaby's and mine belong together! My 7 x great grandfather was Christopher Punchaby, and was born circa 1692 in Bakewell. He married Jane Hancock in 1714, in Bakewell, and they had a son also called Christopher in 1725 - I presume that there were others before him, although I haven't found them yet!
Christopher Jnr. married Mary Longden in Hope in 1746 - they had at least 2 children, Ann & John in 1748 and 1749 respectively, both in Bakewell.
I have followed John's descendants as far as I can using the IGI - he married Rebecca in 1770, produced Samuel who married Elizabeth Harrison in 1814. I have only found 1 child of theirs, Mary b. 1829 d. 1834.
Of course, there are probably a few more Christophers along the line too, so I can't yet see where our link will be.
All the Punchabys, and the family Ann married into, worked as gamekeepers on the Chatsworth Estate.
Hope to hear from you soon - e mail me direct on l.kirby@virgin.net.
Cheers,
Linda

Jane Punchaby married Francis Pheasey 4 Nov 1777 in Bakewell, Derbyshire. The Pheasey line married into the Bright line, which married into the Marsden line, and then into the Cassidy line with my mother. I know nothing of Jane other than she was born in Bakewell

As I previously posted: "Jane Punchaby married Francis Pheasey 4 Nov 1777 in Bakewell, Derbyshire." I am still no further with Jane Punchaby but the Pheasey line she helped to create can be viewed here http://www.tribalpages.com/tribes/s13m3n5
