Hello David,
Nice to hear from another of the Pumford clan. I have traced my husbands family back to the marriage of William Pumford and Elizabeth Howell (or Powell) in 1888 in All Saints Church in Wolverhampton. You can see some of my research on my web page, address below.

I'm afraid that I haven't updated it in a while, you can see a photo on there of my husbands father Joseph Pumford taken during the war.
Do you know when your family arrived in the U.S.A. I know there are some Pumfords in Liverpool which is a likely jumping off point for emigration. There are also some listed on the Ellis Island web pages.
Hope to hear from you again

Hi Martin,
I haven't come across any of my Pumfords yet who left for the N.E. but I am sure we are all from the same family somewhere along the line, my husband
Joe's family originally came from Wolverhampton in the Midlands and they moved down to Newport, South Wales (where we still
live) when a new iron factory opened up(Lysaghts Steel Works, Corporation
Road). A lot of families from Wolverhampton made their way to this area
because of a boom in industry.
The story so far.

My husbands father was
Joseph John Pumford 1914-1983 Lived in Newport, Mon all his life.

His father was
Joseph Henry Pumford 1892-1917 Born in Wolverhampton Workhouse and moved
down to South Wales with his family. He married Theodora Edwards in 1911

His father was
William Henry Pumford b.abt 1849 d. ? on his census form of 1901 he puts his
place of birth as Staffs. Staffordshire He married Elizabeth Howell in 1888
at All Saints Church Wolverhampton and he was living in Bell Street,
Wolverhampton his occupation then was iron worker,
In 1901 he is in Tredegar, South Wales a Masons Labourer
By the time of his sons marriage in 1911 he is living in Lloyd Street,
Newport South Wales an iron worker.
I haven't found his death yet.
On his marriage to Elizabeth aged 26 he is a widower aged 39. I think I have
pinpointed his previous marriage as one in Wolverhampton in 1875. I need to
send for that certificate.
He had 3 children that I know of, William being the eldest born about 1886
I will also send for his birth certificate to find out who is mother was.
There is a big gap between the marriage date in 1875 and William jnr.'s
birth in 1886 so there may be other children somewhere.
One problem I have to sort out is Elizabeth's last name, on her marriage
certificate it is copied as Howell and on Joseph Henry's birth certificate
she is down as Powell. both copies of certificates are typed so it is the
registrars interpretation of the original. This is why I have struggled for
so long to find the marriage. I only found it when their details arrived on
the free BMD website.
Well this is probably more than you wanted to know about my Pumfords but you
never know if we keep plugging away we might make the connection further
back. I have been talking to a Pumford descendant in America and she would like to talk to all Pumfords. Her e-mail address is
FiftyHarly@aol.com
mine is
a.p.pumford@ntlworld.com

All the best
Alwyn

Thank you for your reply. Coincidentally my Grandfather's full name was Joseph Henry.

My mother, Joyce Davison, nee Smith, was born in Spennymoor in 1916. One of her friends there was Catherine Pumford.
Both our family and Catherine's - (her married name was Grey, by the way)- moved to Middlesbrough (north Yorkshie) and Catherine's son, Steve Grey, was in my year at Acklam Hall School, Middlesbrough. Steve went on to be a very, very highly regarded session musician (as a pianist, I believe) and a member of a classy pop group which was instrumental, I think.
