PUMALA, ARDIS Mrs. Ardis Pumala died at her residence, The Remington Club in Rancho Bernardo, Calif., on April 22, 2003. Prior to this, she had lived in Point Loma for approximately 50 years. She was predeceased by her husband, Edwin Pumala, who died in 1991. She was born in Gilbert, Minnesota March 5, 1913 and just recently celebrated her 90th birthday. She attended Virginia Jr. College in Minnesota and received her BA. and M.A. from the University of Minnesota where she joined the Tri Delta sorority. She was involved with Tri Delta alumni charitable activities for most of her adult life. She taught high school in Carlton and Glencoe Minnesota. She was Principal of the high school in Brook Park, Minnesota and Administrative Assistant at Convair. In 1940 she married Edwin Pumala who served as San Diego ' s School Camp Director for 30 years. Early in her married life, she spent much time volunteering with Campfire Girls and was one of 10 recipients of the National Leadership Medallions (1948) and received their highest national honor for 3 consecutive years. Although she loved to travel and visited many foreign countries, she spent most of her time with family and friends enjoying activities such as ping pong, bridge, dancing, and crafts. Her faith was also very important to her and she thoroughly enjoyed worship and fellowship at the Point Loma Presbyterian Church and The Westminister Community Church in Point Loma as well as many small support groups. She even was able to be extremely active in the last year of her life living independently until March of 2003. In August, 2002, she traveled to Massachusetts to attend a family wedding in Fairfield, Conn., and be with her daughter Beth. At Christmas she also traveled to Mass. to be with family for two weeks. Her granddaughter, Heather, and her husband, Jason from Austin, Texas, spent a week with her in January. In March, her grandson, Scott and his wife, Jennifer from Mass. celebrated her 90th birthday with her. She is survived by her daughter Beth and her husband G.V., of Essex, Mass., her granddaughter, Heather and her husband, Jason of Austin, Texas; her grandson, Scott and his wife Jennifer of Gloucester, Mass.; her devoted niece, Donna Elson of St. Paul, Minn., as well as surrogate grandson Gresham Bayne of San Diego, Calif., and her surrogate daughter, Mary Beth Schrepferman of Poway, Calif. In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made to the Westminister Community Church of Point Loma or Horizon Hospice of Poway, Ca. A memorial service for Ardis will be held in July, 2003 at Westminister Community Church. Exact date and time will be determined later.
