I have found that he did go by the name of Orville Quackenbush and he was an associate professor of sociology at the University of Minnesota.
He has published a thesis "The Development of the Correctional, Reformatory, and Penal Institutions of Minnesota." This was used as a source for a book.

I talked to my parents and they said that they would look to see if they had any photos. My mother said that Orville may have been a professor? She talked about how he and another man would often play records of opera type music. This whole conversation started because I wanted to know the story behind a cedar chest that we've had in the family which now resides in my house along with 3 chairs that all came from the big house in Slayton. Can I ask where you live?

No, but I would love to learn more about that book, as well as the house they purchased. Do you have any photos of it that you would be willing to share with us. We do not have very much data about Mary Quackenbush. She was the sister of our great-grandfather, Jeremiah Love, and I think we may have one photo of them taken together. Any information you have about them or the estate will be so welcome. I will do a search for a book written by Orville. Do you know if he published under the name Quackenbush or Pullen? Thanks so much for replying to my query. Shirley

My mother (Sharon Hagen) stayed with Maude Pullen when she was going to high school. My parents (Melvin and Sharon Hoffman) then bought the house from her estate. While they owned the house they continued to rent the rooms upstairs. They mentioned Orville Quackenbush and remembered him writing a book. Do you know any information on the book he may have written?

Thanks,
David Hoffman

Sarah Ann Pullen/Pulliam m. Willis T. Brooks

Researching Pullens related to my own line, I deduced the following. I will not be doing any more research on this branch of the Pullens, so this is all the info I have. I have no primary evidence for this, only the clues listed. However, my conclusions may point another researcher in the right direction.

Here goes:

Sarah Ann Pullen/Pullem/Pulliam married Willis T. Brooks on April 25, 1840, in Tallapoosa County, AL. This info is from the Ancestry AL Marriage Index. Willis T. and Sarah and their children show in the Arkansas censuses from 1850 until at least 1880.

I kept trying to connect Sarah to my Pullen family from Tallapoosa County, Abraham/Abrahm & Liddie Pullen. She was born in GA in the right time frame to be in their family, and Abrahm and Liddie always show as coming from GA.

However, in addition to the Abrahm Pullen family, there was another Pullen family in Tallapoosa: William N. or H. Pullen and his wife Nancy (maybe Abrahm's brother?). In 1850 William is in Arkansas, born NC, Nancy is born SC. Sarah always shows as born in GA. However, 1880 shows that Sarah was born in GA, her father was from NC, and her mother was from GA. The fact that both Sarah's parents were not from GA is one clue that Abrahm and Liddie were not her parents. The similarities between William & Nancy's birthplaces and the birthplaces listed for Sarah's parents in 1880 is another.

And further:

In 1840 William H. Pullam is in Tallapoosa County with a daughter in the right age range of 15 - 20; Sarah would have been 17. Nearby are several Brooks families with boys in the right age ranges of 15 - 20 or 20 - 30 for Willis, who would have been 20ish. A. Pullen is not around as far as I have found.

So it seems to me that the parents of Sarah Ann Pullen/Pulliam are William H. and Nancy and not Abrahm and Liddie, 'though they may be related.

Happy hunting.

Hi Helen ... found this site by accident and note that you have at least one reply about Kent Pullens. My GGGF was a Jesse Pullen (m. Harriet Kingsnorth)from Chilham in Kent who emigrated to Tasmania in 1822. I have quite a bit of info about him/them if it's of any interest. A fair amount of Australia's population seems to be descended from them. Warm regards. Glenn

The Costello Family had settled in Loudoun, Va., and I can't help but assume there is some kind of connection here.

I have at home a copy of a homemade Costello newspaper titled "Footsteps," which gives the names of Anna's parents as William and Edith Pullen. However, this is unverified.

Does any of this ring a bell? Does this "fit" into your tree anywhere??

Thanks!
-Michael

HI Jeff
My connection with the Pullen Burry family is my grandmother-Ethel. She emigrated to South Africa. Her father was Henry Pullen burry and his father was John Pullen that changed his name to Pullen Burry from Sompting, Sussex. I was wondering if your family came from that line of John. Henry had 3 brothers -Arthur, Hubert and Horace. he also had some very famous friends like Arthur Canon Doyle and Yeats and belonged to this weird sect called the Golden Dawn and wrote a book on kabalaism. his sister bessie was a famous anthropologist of her time and wrote many books. the trouble with researching henry was he was sometimes recorded as henry burry pullen burry or just henry b pullen burry or even henry b p burry. but once we worked that out it was easier. he left his wife and went on the goldrush to USA where he died.

Thansk for your messages. I can't tell if there is a connection. The person I have served in both WWI and WWII in England and was awarded service medals in each. He was the son of Thomas Pullen and Emma Privett and the grandson of John Privett and Jane Warren (Jane was sister of my GG-grandfather George Warren). I do not know if he married. Do you have any more details?

Hi Carole
I am currently just starting to research the Pullens from Kirdford.
I wonder if you might be able to help me:
Was the William (b1818, that you have listed married to a Sarah (possibly Bentley)?
I am trying to track down details of both his parents & his children, the William I am looking for is the father of Olive (b1850, Wisborough Green), who married a Michael Streeter.
Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Regards

John
