Hi Susan
I saw your message and trawled through the list of names that I have. It seems that that there are at least two strands of
Pullens around London/Kent area. Where and if they connect I have no clues so far. It seems unlikely that my particular strand could lay any claim to a crest and latin motto! However, common family names in my line are Walter, James, Wilfred, Roland. If you know of any of those we may be able to trace a connection. Any information would be most welcome. I am at
greg@gspullen.freeserve.co.ukThe story about gypsies may have two possible sources.
1) My family were from the Isle of
Sheppey which was apparently very popular for smugglers. The most famous smuggling family in
Sheppey was 'Gold' however and I can't establish a link there.
2) The name
Pullen has some connection with horses. I have been told this but I have no idea what the connection is. Any ideas?
My family line that I have is fairly direct. All of the work was done by my sister and for the most part the family tree follows the paternal line back to 1691 which is when Peter
Pullen married a Sarah Sturf (Possibly a
Dutch name?) Presuming he was at least 20 this would put his birth date at around 1670 which I believe to have been the time when the
Dutch navy came and made a serious nuisance of themselves off
Sheppey for about 10 days. Apparently most of the islanders and crew of the one
English ship defected to the
Dutch side! Could Peter Pullen's parents have been amongst them and could he have returned to
Sheppey to marry Sarah?
Not a clue. Any thoughts?
regards Greg
