Hi John, I have just sent a message off to Peter.Very sorry about your mothers death. I saw it in the Courier Mail tho I only got the copy recently, hence my search on the Pulbrooks. Your Mum Ellen and my Dad, Wally were born in Blackall a year apart. Dad was the Grandson born 1925 & your Ellen born 1924, Ellen the mother, had grandchildren 16years older than her children. We don't know to much about Ellen nee Donohoe only what I researched. I was able to get a photo of Ellen last year when I went out to Barcaldine for an elderly Aunts funeral one of the cousins had brought an album along that her father had made for her daughter 30 years ago.

I am Walter Pulbrook's grandson. My mother was the Ellen referred to. She died on 22 Feb last year. There is only one member of Mum's immediate family living and that is my uncle, another Walter Pulbrook.

Hi everyone. Yes, there were two John Pulbrooks who came to Tasmania as convicts. " My " John, arrived in 1830 on the Royal George, and John Pulbrook who arrived in 1844 on the Sir Robert Peel. Both came from Berkshire, but not sure if they were related. The second John was born about 1822 and was the son of Thomas & Ann Pulbrook, of Wallingford. His siblings were Sarah, Mary Ann & William. He was convicted of larceny, and sent to Tasmania. About a year later his parents Thomas & Ann, and siblings Mary Ann & William emigrated to Ontario, Canada. John Pulbrook (2) married Mary Elizabeth Kennedy in Melbourne in 1852. The family lived in the Eltham area, and their children Thomas, Mary Ann and Eliza were born between 1853 & 1857. In April 1858, John and his family left Melbourne on board the Royal Charter and sailed to Liverpool, then to Canada. Their son John Thomas was born in Canada about 1859. The family were listed in the 1861 Census, but by 1862 were back in Melbourne- another daughter, Margaret was born in inner-city Fitzroy. By 1863 the family were in Lilydale, where James Patrick was born in 1863. It seems the family stayed at Lilydale, and John Snr. died there on 1st July 1896. His son, John Thomas was found drowned in the Yarra River on 1 Jan. 1889, after attending the Flemington Races.
I have been in contact with a relative of this family in Canada- he is descended from John's sister Mary Ann who married John Edward Looker in 1848 at Toronto, Canada. In Canada the family surname is spelt as Polbrook or Pullbrook, it seems. Cheers, and happy hunting.

Also,do you know if "John Pulbrook" transported to Tasmania in 1844 is related to the "John Pulbrook transported in 1830,and if so what is the relationship?

My husband is descended from William Pullbrook brother of
John Pullbrook. In some references, this John was a convict
sentenced in 1844 to 7 years in Tasmania and married Mary Kennedy in 1852 so I'm wondering if there were 2 John Pullbrooks that were convicts around the same time?

1. WILLIAM PULLBROOK /2 PAULBROOK (MR. PULLBROOK /1) was born November 25, 1821 in England, and died April 22, 1906 in Essa Township, Simcoe County. He married RACHEL PHILLIPS February 18, 1850 in Innisfil, Simcoe County. She was born Abt. 1830 in Innisfil, Simcoe County, and died Bet. 1867 - 1871 in Innisfil, Simcoe County.

Notes for WILLIAM PULLBROOK / PAULBROOK:
Spelling over the centuries being at best erratic, and local dialects very thick, often lead to the development of "sounds like" surnames. Polbrock, Pullbrook, Paulbrook etc. William arrived in Toronto in 1837 and moved to Tecumseh, Simcoe County. Brothers Thomas and John remained in Toronto while sister Mary Ann married John Edward Looker.

In the 1871 census for District 41, Tecumseh, Simcoe County, sub district A-3, page 34, line 17 shows
William as a widow and his age as 46 making his birth year about 1824. Living on Lot 22, Concession 14, leasing 50 acres. In 1877 Lot 22 was sold to the Railway. William is living with his daughter Mary Ann age 20, daughter Rachael age 17, sons Robert age 14, William age 8, Thomas age 6 and John age 4.

From the Ontario Archives, microfilm MS935, Reel # 127, Registration # 26577 shows the death of William Pulbrook on April 22, 1906 at the age of 88 years, 4 months and 2 days. Living on Lot 6, Concession 10 in Essa Township. Informant was his son Thomas and cause of death was senile decay.

Notes for RACHEL PHILLIPS:
In the 1871 census for District 41, Tecumseh, Simcoe County, sub district A-3, page 34, line 18 shows
Rachael as died, as William is a widow. She would have died between 1867 and 1871. Isaac Philips is living on the next farm and his age is 60 years making his birth year about 1811 and he was born in Ontario.

I am also descended from Lot Pulbrook ex Stanford in the Vale. I understand two Pulbrook brothers travelled to Australia, settled for a while around Beechworth Vic and then seperated, one heading towards the riverina and the other north into NSW. I am descended from the northern brother and until recently enjoyed the company on occasion of two aunties approaching their centenary years. They were a wealth of information right back to Beechworth.Happy to swap notes with any kin out there.

Hi Bruce, you are indeed connected to the families mentioned above. Your grandfather, Lisle John senior, was the son of John Alfred Pulbrook and (not Mary) Bridget Agnes McDonald. He was born at Murtoa in 1894. I recently found the death registration for John Alfred- he died at Warracknabeal in 1912. ( but in the index as Bullbrook. ) If you purchased the marriage certificate for John Alfred & Bridget, it should give the names of her parents. She died at Ararat in 1945, but there is no mention of her in the Vic. Electoral Rolls. She was admitted to the Ararat Insane Asylum shortly after the birth of her last child in 1898, and I am not sure when/if she was released.

Hi Peter, would love to compare notes. I have a fair bit of info on your Lot and his descendants. At this stage I am stuck at my John, the convict who arrived on the Royal George, but I am sure there is a connection somewhere. His wife Sarah came from Stanford in the Vale. Apart from the shared surname, there are striking similarities in temperament. Both families had members that were mentally unstable, this is not a judgement, but a simple statement of fact. Hi everyone, I am descended from George, the elder brother of John William Pulbrook. I am doing a one-name study of the surname in Australia. Your J.W. Pulbrook is the son of John Pulbrook and Sarah Kinch, and was christened at Ashbury, Berkshire on 12 April 1829 under the surname Fulbrook. He came to Tasmania with his family about 1835, where John Pulbrook Snr. had arrived as a convict in 1830 on The Royal George.
According to the records of St. Paul's Church, Geelong your John William married Catherine Rebecca Carter on 25 Dec. 1854. ( His sister Phoebe Lewis & her husband Joseph were witnesses. ) Their children christened at Christ Church Geelong were Phoebe Ida Rebecca, born 9 Oct. 1855 & chr. 15 Nov. 1855, died 21 Nov. 1855 Geelong; and Adelaide Louisa, born 23 Nov. 1856 & chr. 22 Jan. 1857. She married James John Miles in 1880 and died 1917 in Warragul, Vic.
From the records of St. Pauls's Church Geelong, their son John Alfred Pulbrook was born 8 Oct. 1858 and chr. 28 Dec. 1858. He married Bridget Agnes McDonald in 1882, and the family lived in Murtoa and Warracknabeal, Vic. John Alfred died between 1909 ( last mention on Vic. Electoral Roll ) and the Great War. Anyone know when he died??

Very interested to know Catherine Rebecca Carter is your great-great-grandmother. With Geelong connections, she is probably the sister of my great-great-grandfather, George Cumming Carter, married in Geelong on 7 December 1854. His sister, Catherine Rebecca, was four years younger than he was and the only daughter in a family of six! The Carters lived in Ashby, Geelong, as did Catherine after her marriage. I am not a Simcoe county resident and, unlike them, I do want to know more about the family. I never knew great grandpa William arrived with family in 1823. God, that was 185 years ago and fascinating to learn. I was born in Toronto in 1938 and never heard nary a word about the family. Like they were "suspicious" if you ever asked a question.

Thanks for the info. I've corresponded with Carolyn too. I'd like to learn a bit more about Rachel since she was born in Ontario. Know anything?????

Just read your remarks about Robert Pullbrook. Didn't know he had so many other names but am pretty sure he's my Uncle Oscar. Is he buried in the Alliston cemetery? That would be opposite my Father and Mother. My Dad died in 1962 and my Mother in 1983.

My mother's name was Pulbrook born 1924 in Blackall central Qld but her father was born in Bourke and her grandfather died in Nyngan. I know from years of trawling NSW records that almost all Pulbrooks with connections in country NSW are descended from Lot Pulbrook and Rosetta Jane Pulbrook formerly Jaques who arrived in Sydney from London in 1853. Their first two sons born in London were Joseph Alfred Pulbrook and Arthur Jaques Pulbrook so your Arthur Joseph was probably named after them, maybe his uncles? Happy to share other info or hints for research

Hi my maternal line is Pulbrook arrived Sydney 1853 from London. Earlier ancestor Lot Pulbrook chr 1773 Stanford in the Vale, Berkshire (now Oxfordshire) mar 1793 London. Happy to share info or compare notes for your ONS

i have just started searching for my relatives/ ancestors. I know very little about my family but have my grandfathers details, he was born in cobar in 1911 and died 1977 in gosford area, he married daphne ruth drury, my nan. He served in the army between 1941 and 45 Any info would be a great help.

Hi, my name is Marilyn and I have been reading the posts on the Pullbrook's looking for any information on Rosetta's husband William.
My Mother's Father was John Coss a younger brother to William. I would really love to get any information on William, or his father that anyone has. An older family member also remembers a photo of John in Mum's living room and he too is described as having very olive (dark) skin.
But the photo seemed to disappear after Nanna died.
Happy to exchange the information that I have on William Coss & Bridget Fudge albeit that it is not that extensive.

After reading through the message boards about "The Pulbrooks" i notice that the daughter referred to was called Adelaide Louisa Pulbrook and married my grandfather in Geelong and after that moved to Warragul.

I have done a small amount of research but mainly on my fathers side of the tree but i do know that my Great Great Grandmother was Catherine Rebecca Carter. I would really like to share any information with you

I am not sure but i think he came from Stanford in the Vale,Berkshire.

I am looking for information on Lisle John Pullbrook, born in Australia, August 1894 died also in Australia, 1957, he joined the Australian Army in 1914 and married Gertrude Daisy Ramage or Daisy Ramage in 1923.

I am hoping people will have more information about him, and Daisy also any possible photos? I would love to get a copy of a photo of him when he enlisted in the Army

My name is Bruce Ian Pulbrook, son of Ian Alfred Pulbrook, born 1926, to Gertrude Daisy Pulbrook nee Ramage and Lisle John Pulbrook
My father also had a brother of the same name:Lisle John Pulbrook.
Lisle John senior was born in Murtoa in about 1894. His mother was Mary Pulbrook who lived in Warracknabeal. I wonder if there might be a connection with the Pulbrooks you mention

My Grandfather's Mother was Adelaide Pulbrook and moved to Warragul and i have done a small amount of research into our family although mostly on my father's side and i would love to share any information that is relevant.
I go to the library in Melbourne for my research as i am not on the internet.
I know it is old fashioned but i would much prefer to share personal information in letter form.
