My Grandfather came to the US in 1903, having jumped ship (He was a cook on the Hamburg Line) in New York. His name at the time was Emil Pukas, which he changed to his Mother's Maiden name of Bernhard. Apparently he was pretty quick with his fists and when people called him "poop-ass he would shortly teach then the error of their ways.
He was a Chef at the Waldorf Astoria for a short time and then a Chef at Delmonico's Restaurant in NY.
His Mother was a famous Mid-Wife in Germany and received a medal from the Kaiserine (Kaisers wife) around the turn of the century. I have a photograph of her wearing the medal that was taken the day she was awarded it.
There were two other boys that stayed in Germany - Richard Pukas who was a Maitre'de at the better Restaurants in Berlin. Another, Richard Pukas was a Model Maker for several Museums in Germany.
Richard Pukas served in the German Army from 1914 to 1918. I'm not sure how to find those records.
I understand the family came from Lithuania or near there. My GF's Father was a Butcher and had a meat business throughout the Baltic.
I have exhausted most of my knowledge and hope you can point me towards any records you are aware of.
Thank You
