Andy,

I think I can help you as I have researching my family roots from Floyd and Butler county Iowa. All my ancestors on my mothers side immigrated to this area (Greene and Marble Rock, Iowa.) from Luxembourg and Germany.

My g gramdfather Johannes Krapp and wife Barbara Muller are buried at Roseville St. Mary’s (old Roseville church). One of their daughters Anna Barbara Krapp married Mathias Stephan? Puhl. They are buried at Rosehill St. Mary’s cemetery in Greene.

You are asking about one of their children Magdalene Mary Puhl (b 12 April 1903) who married Peter Nixt. Magdalene was long lived and wrote to my mother frequently until Magdalene died 1 Jan 1997.
James and Marlys Nixt are still on the Nixt family farm in Greene and sometimes come to our Krapp summer picnics.

I have been interested in determining where these Roseville farmers came from in Germany and find all from the same general area of Saarland.

If you are a Puhl, I found that Jacob Puhl immigrated to Marble Rock, Iowa 27 April 1878 (application date) the same general time as my g grandfather and his family. I have a copy of the application from Rimlingen, Saarland. I found it in the Joseph Mergen immigrations book (p 334). Jacob (b 7 Jan 1824) was married to Maria (Jost). They are both buried at Roseville. The application says they came to Marble Rock to join his brother in law for success in farming. His brother in law was Mathias Jost (b. 6 Oct 1837) and was married to Anna Marie Schmitt (b 22 Feb 1841). Their immigration application is dated 4 Feb 1876 and they came with 3 children from Duren, Saarland (p 157).

As for the Nixt’s--- John (b 26 dec 1832) and Mathias (b 1831), I have not found out where in Europe they came from. First they came to the Dubuque Iowa area , then settled in the Greene, Iowa area by 1870.

My g grandfather Nicolaus Heinz worked as a farm hand on Matt’s farm in 1870. John Nixt married Nicholas’ sister Mary Margaretha but the ship did not list any children when they came over in 1864. They did bring Susanna Nixt, probably the Nixt brothers widowed mother.

And I have not found out where Nicolaus Heinz (or his sister) came from in Europe either. He did marry Helena Feyereisen in 1875 and have traced the Feyereisen roots back to Keispelt, Luxembourg.

e-mail me for any other details you are interested in.

Roger

Hi Jean,
I did find the record in my computer and am attaching it.
It came from the Joseph Mergen book and my friend Bernie Gleinke who has posted on the Puhl board assisted with the translation. The Saarland village of Düppenweiler seems to be the common link of my great grandfather (Krapp/Grapp) and the Puhl's. I have recently found the village of Mettendorf, Germany that the Nixt and Heinz immigrated from. Also, I have photographs from the Church books including some of Puhl baptisms from Düppenweiler.

Hello Roger,

Thank you so much for the information on Jacob and Peter Puhl. I knew that Jacob was from Duppenweiler. I have his son's Obit. from Minnesota and it list where he was from. It is nice to see that it was true.

Jacob Puhl and Marie Jost had 6 Children

Nichlas(Nicholas)
Peter who I believe married Anna
Jacob Jr who married Eva Guindling (This is my Husbands Great Great Grandfather)
Mathias who married Anna Krapp
Mary who married John Krammer
Maggie I think she married William Gable (have not found any facts to prove this.)

I have Jacob Puhl Sr. Death Certificate from the state of Iowa, Floyd County.

I also have an obits for Magdalene Mary Puhl Nixt. and one for Anna Krapp.

I would love to see the photographs from the Church books for the Puhl's
