Hi, I am looking for information on a Charles Pugsley and any of his family. I think he is my Great Grandmothers "Jane Stephenson's" Father. He was born 1831 Harberton Devon and was in the Royal Artillery, died 1908 Harberton Devon. I also think he was married to a Jane Phillips. He was posted to Leith Fort, Edinburgh around 1860/1865. Attached to Jane's Birth Certificate information that her mother took Charles Pugsley to court about 1865 Paternity Suit in Edinburgh. Can anybody help me in finding more about him, his Siblings and Parents. Thanks

Hi, I have an ancestor, Susanna Pugsley who was Charles' sister. I am not currently subscribed to Ancestry but I think that you can view my tree. Paul.

Hi Paul
Glad you can see my family tree, Charles is my GG Grandfather as he had a child while posted to Leith, Edinburgh.
Susan/Susan she seems to change her name or is a different person?
Where can I view your family tree?
I do not live near Devon so would be interested in your research, if thats ok.

Hello Frances! I wonder if you saw my reply yesterday to your 2006 query about PC James Stephenson? I have just realised that you also posted queries about Pugsley. I assume you are descended from Jane Ann Charlotte Pugsley Stephenson and Fergus Ferguson? I'm glad to have an explanation of that name Pugsley, which doesn't occur elsewhere in the Stephenson family.
I have been researching my Stephenson ancestors since the early 1980s and have written three articles about them. I have material from the National Archives of Scotland, the National Library of Scotland, you name it. I have got them back to my 6 x great-grandfather William Stephenson (c1730-1807), who was probably born in Northumberland.
I'll leave it at that for now, but let me know if you would like more information.

Hi Harry
Thanks for replying to my message and sorry I have been slow to come back but looking after my Grandchildren so not so much time.
You are right I am related to Jane Ann Charlotte Pugsley and Fergus Ferguson they are my Great Grandparents. My Grandfather "James Ferguson" was one of their sons.
I found James Stephenson in the census, one as a Boarder and another as a son but could never find out where he was born and I think he was a brother to my Great Grandmother Jane Stephenson. I could never find out where there mother Elizabeth Bryden Scott Stephenson was born though one record did say Kelso way and Hugh's name came into it. I really need to look this all up again to be give you an accurate answer to your questions.
Jane's father was in the Army "Charles Pugsley" and she was born illegitimate, Elizabeth took him to court for maintenance and the records are in the National Archives in Edinburgh I do have copies somewhere in my papers. Charles was from Devon again I will have to look up my records for more details.
If you wish more information I would be more than happy to look things up and if you do not mind I may get in touch about your research as well. I do have lots of questions but have not been doing much with my family tree for a while as I have moved house etc, busy time.
I orginally come Leith in Edinburgh, lived in Linlithgow for over 30 years and now live south of Lanark so not far from you.
Thanks for contacting me and helping in my research.
Frances Lawrie.

I have over 30 years' worth of research on the Stephensons under my belt. Originally I concentrated on Hugh in East Lothian, and the trail led back to Northumberland and Roxburghshire. A few years ago I made contact with another descendant of Hugh in Biloxi, Mississippi, who supplied lots more info. I got interested in the Stephensons in Edinburgh, and even went out one day with my camera snapping buildings they had lived in.
Rather than rambling on here, I would like to send you a little document I drew up for my own interest and reference, about Hugh Stephenson, his children and his descendants. If you let me know your email address I'll send it to you as an attachment. It will answer lots of your questions. Then I can let you have copies of articles from various journals.
My wife and I lived in Linlithgow for 7 years. As for grandchildren, our elder son's partner is expecting their 1st child/our 1st grandchild and was admitted to the Royal Infirmary last night, so we are on tenterhooks. Another descendant of Hugh Stephenson is imminent!
