Anyone a Dana or a Puffinbarger?

Anyone a Dana or a Puffinbarger?

Surnames: Puffinbarger
Hi! My name is Jenee and I am looking for anyone who knows about my family history. My grandpa's name was Park Puffinbarger but he changed it to Dana because of his work. He told me that I was part Native American but I'm not quite sure how much or what tribe I'm from. It could possibly be Cherrokee. I think I'm 1/32 but if I'm atleast 1/16 I could get great scholarships that I need for college. I am going to be applying to UCLA soon as well as other universities. Can anyone give me any clarity on my family history?

Jenee:

I will be glad to help in your quest, however at this time "Park", does not appear in my database of surnamed individuals. What was his complete birth name, birth date? Any other family information might also be helpful in determining the connection.

As a long time genealogist for the family, I maintain a very large database of surnamed individuals, which includes all known variations. The name originated in what is today Germany. Since they arrived in 1733, there has been ample opportunity to become exposed to native American people.

My group did just that, by moving to the Oklahoma Territory. Both of my grandmothers were half-breed Osage.

Since the family is inherently of Germanic dissent, I have never found any direct relationship an Indian tribe other than mine. However, you might also contact the BIA(Bureau of Indian Affairs) to see if he had a tribal number.

Another approach - Where did he work?; Why did he change his name?; Check the records on that subject and the exact process.

Hi, I am Connie Puffinbarger and you are correct about the native american and we are cherokee. My father name was Donald and they were born in Selma, Iowa. I had a grandmother who last name was Noel who was half Cherokee Indian. I am trying to find where the name orginated.
