Puente Family from Cantabria Region of Spain
My father Paul Faustino Puente (de Anorga) was from the small village of Hoznayo, about 60 KM south of Santander. He was born about 1896 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1911. He married Hazel Rebecca Stanley of Dayton, TN. He was the oldest of 12 children, only one of whom I ever knew. He was my uncle Joe (Jose Puente).
My mother, Hazel died in 1967 and he died in 1969 before I had a chance to really learn more about his family. If anyone is descended from a Puente from this region of Spain, I would love to hear from you.

Re: Puente Family from Cantabria Region of Spain
Hello Brenda
It is nice to hear from another Puente researcher. I'm not sure how to go about determining if we are related somehow, but let me give you the information I have and we can go from there. My father was only one of two brothers to come to the U.S. so our little family only has 6 Puente relatives in the U.S. However, I was recently in Spain to meet cousins whom I had never met before and while there I did find more information about my father's family.
My father was Pablo (Paul) Faustino Puente, b. 1895, Hoznayo, Entrambasaguas, Cantabria, Spain, d. 1969, San Rafael, California. His father was José Natalio Puente Blanco, b. 1868, Termino (former name of Hoznayo), Entrambasaguas, Santander Province, Cantabria, Spain, d. 1943 in Termino. His parents were Gabino Puente and Trinidad Blanco. I have no further information on them except that they were also probably from the region of Cantabria.
My father's mother was Gumersinda Añorga Guerra, b. 1870, Agüero, Marina de Cudeyo, Santander Province, Cantabria, Spain, d. 1959 in Hoznayo. Her parents were Rufino Añorga and Angela Guerra, b. 1847 Agüero, Marina de Cudeyo, Santander Province, Cantabria, Spain, d. 1918 in Hoznayo. Rufino was born in the Basque County in what we believe is the village of Añorga, Spain in the province of San Sebastian only a few kilometers from the city of San Sebastian. I remember my father telling me about his Basque ancestry and also that he could speak a few words of the language.
My father's siblings were:
Matilde Puente Añorga (1897-1984) unmarried Rufino Puente Añorga (1898-died young) Maria Luz Puente Añorga (1899-1988) 4 children Eulalia Puente Añorga (1902-abt.1980) unmarried José Puente Añorga (1903-1959) 2 children Angela Puente Añorga (1905-?) 2 children Leopoldo Puente Añorga (1909-1986) 3 children Luciano Angel Puente Añorga (1911-1959) 3 children Antonio Puente Añorga (1912-1957) married, children unknown (infant girl) Puente Añorga
I have most of the descendants and their children but let's first see if any of these names connect with yours. Puente is not an uncommon name in Cantabria but just maybe we can find a relationship somewhere.
Best regards
Paul

Re: Puente Family from Cantabria Region of Spain
Paul: My Husband's maternal great-grandmother is Pedro Puente born in Santander, Spain. I don't have his DOB but am estimating it is around 1865. He married Carmen Diego, also from Santander, and their child was Ines Puente Diego born in Santander about 1893. Do you have any information about these people since your Puentes are from that region as well? Melissa Miller

Re: Puente Family from Cantabria Region of Spain
Hello Melissa, I'm sorry I don't have any information that might help you. I haven't been able to go beyond my grandfather, José Natalio Puente Blanco as yet. No one in the family has ever mentioned a Pedro Puente so far. I think the only way I am going to learn more about José's ancestry is to hire a local genealogist. I plan to do that but not any day soon. It can get very expensive.
All the best,
Paul

Re: Puente Family from Cantabria Region of Spain
Hi Melissa
Before I get involved in Puente surname DNA testing I really need to develop a well documented paper trail that goes back beyond my grandfather. I'm sure you are aware that all that DNA testing can tell us is that if we have a solid match that we share some common ancestor "x" generations ago. However, unless we have the birth, baptism, marriage records for each ancestor going back a number of generations we won't be able to tell which of those people might be the common ancestor.
I did hire a genealogist to get me started with my grandmothers line, surname is Añorga. After she confirmed my great grandfather's marriage and full name we were able to trace him back to his birth village in the Basque country. I then found a wonderful online resource from the Historical Archives of the Diocese of San Sebastian that has about 2 million records and was able to trace one line back to 1620 and others back to the late 1600s. My earliest Añorga ancestor is my 6th great grandfather, Christobal Añorga, born in 1680 in the province of Guipuzcoa.
So, my next project will be to trace my father's surname of Puente back as far as I can. It may take several months since the genealogist is very busy. After I develop the ancestral record then I will consider doing DNA testing to see if I share a common ancestor with your husband. Chances are slim since Puente is a very common name in Cantabria but it might be interesting to see if there is a connection.
By the way, do you know of any online resource for ancestral records in Cantabria? I haven't found any to date.
Paul

Now I'm looking for information about Angela Guerra Teja, because you didn't find anything. If I can find something I will send you.
