Captain Christopher Puddicombe - b.early 1800s
Dear All I have managed to determine that Christopher Puddicombe was the Captain of a ship called the Mayaram Dayaram on 18 August 1842 in Bombay, India. This date is the birth date for his daughter, Ellen Puddicombe. Ellen subsequently married my GGGrandfather Charles Yates Reed on 28 April 1860. Does ANYONE have any information on either Ellen or Christopher, particularly where Christopher may have been born in England ?? Any help or clues much appreciated. Robin

Re: Captain Christopher Puddicombe - b.early 1800s
Hi,
I have recently done some work upon early Victorian Bombay, and Puddicombe & Company were then a firm of merchants/auctioneers operating in Bombay in the early 1850s. The firm bought from ships, and organised sales in the go-downs and wharve of Bombay. They also sold upon commission and handled estate and re-location sales. A good number of their adverts appear in the Bombay Gazette and Indian Daily News of 1851. These are interesting adverts. Copies of these newspapers can be read in the National Newspaper Library at Colindale, north west London.
Best wishes.

Re: Captain Christopher Puddicombe - b.early 1800s
Chris Thank you for taking the trouble to post a reply. I have found little on the Puddicombes who married into the Yates/Phillips/Reed (Reid) family of coffee planters in S.India during the mid 1800s. With your lead, I will try and find something more on the Puddicombes and their business. I had not heard of the National Newspaper library so thanks for the lead. Any further information would be very gratefully received. Thanks again Robin Philips, Kenilworth Warks

Re: Captain Christopher Puddicombe - b.early 1800s
Robin,
The Puddicombe business in Bombay seems to have begun in the late 1840s/1850.
The 1850s adverts show the firm as Puddicombe (Late Henry Wooler & Company.)
There is some marriage information on the internet for the relevant Puddicombs, I believe a daughter, perhaps of Captain Puddicombe; the date is right, 1850s.
I recommend the Bombay Gazette, it is very interesting, although it is a little hard work reading it all, because it is all on microfiche.
I am glad to be of help, and will look out for further leads, as I am working these old Indian newpapers for the next few weeks.
Best wishes.
Chris Mills.

Re: Captain Christopher Puddicombe - b.early 1800s
Christopher Puddicombe's eldest daughter, Elizabeth Ann Puddicombe, was my great grandmother. she married John Allcock or Alcock, wh was born in Norfolk. He was a master mariner, sailing ships between Arabia via India to the far east and China. John Allcock and Elizabeth married in 1853 on the "Earl of Clare". Elizabeth had several children on board. Three sons subsequently came back to work in India as did one daughter. Elizabeth was born in Willesden, Middlesex, according to census records. John Allcock called himself Captain. But I suspect he was a master of a ship who never gained his official title. He sailed with Lascars as crew, no European sailors. He appeared to have made money selling opium to China in the 1850s. It seems Christopher Puddicombe may also have done the same.
