Elaine and Bernard, we are related...distantly!!

Hi you two,

I've just been browsing again and I see Elaine, that your paternal grandfather, and Bernard's Great -Grandfather are one and the same - James Ley Puddicombe! He is also my Great - Great Uncle - his younger brother Albert being my Great - Great Grandfather.

I've browsed through all the messages posted here, and I have a fair idea of who seems to be who, but there doesn't seem to be much information out there about who James Ley Puddicombe's parents were - and that's about as far back as we're able to go. I'd love to exchange information - I've got some about James Ley's 3 siblings, but I keep drawing a blank about their parents.

Please email me back - I'd love to fill in any gaps and I do admit to being intrigued as to James Ley and his wife and descendants - just browsing through, there seem to be a heap of you - spread all over Canada and Newfoundland!

Looking forward to hearing from any Puddicombe!

Regards,

Cara (Puddicombe Great Grandparents)

I don't know if you are still at that address but I have only just caught up with the Puddicombe correspondence. I have a James Ley Puddicombe b Jan 1797 in Devon England, d Jan 1874 in London England. He was married to Mary Ann who died before 1841 when he married again. This may not be your James Ley, but the Ley is significant, in my case traceable back to his grandmother, Mary Ley. Ley has remained as a second name in my father's family to this day. Does any of the above ring a bell?

Your Puddicombe query dates back some years now - but email me if you are still interested as I can trace the line back to 1606. I do not expect to get any further as the records are either not there or not legible.

Sorry, I have only just discovered this message; it does seem that we may be related as my grandfather had one brother and I think 2 sisters, Agnes Wilson, being one of them. She lived off Highgate Road. In fact,I have a copy letter she wrote to my Dad, William, who had written to her on the passing of his father, James Ley Puddicombe

Hi I have only just been catching up on this; my grandfather was James Ley Puddicombe; he had, I think, 2 sisters (although I only know of one) and one brother, Alfred. He may have been born around 1855 and went out to the colonies wjere he had two families and I am descended from the second family. I am lucky to be in touch with some of the descendants of the first family. Do let me have your news.

I think it must go back to James Ley Puddicombe 1797-1874. His daughter was Philippa who married John James Craggs; their son, James Ley Craggs 1849-1885, was my great grandfather - his daughter Emily was my paternal grandmother. Philippa's brother was James Ley Puddicombe 1830-1876, who married Ann Mason in 1852. I haven't looked at that side of the family but it does seem likely that their son was named after his father and was your grandfather. This would (if so) make us some sort of cousin. I hope this makes sense and you can fill me in on the colonial side as I haven't a worldwide subscription to Ancestry! All the best Anne

hi ms cara; i think i'm now understanding whom u might be in all this, which is so fascinating! i'm elaine's youngest bother, grenville residing in ontario canada. we are 8 siblings all together and elaine was the only one who went (back, altho born in BG) to the UK,while the rest of us migrated to canada in 70's due to civil unrest in the fast becoming independent british guiana.

of course in those days, none of us would have dreamed of going abroad from where James came until Elaine had the admirable and unprecedented (within the family and BG for that matter) desire to pursue her dreams

We found many letters written to James from UK, when our dad william richard died in guyana in 1978 but never really understood the connection, other than he had come to BG as a plantation owner/in-charge? my older siblings would know more details as i'm the youngest.

tc and god bless
grenville in ON, canada
