My name is Bernard,I was born Guyana South America, now living in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada. My mother and I are interested in in the ancestry of her maiden name Puddicombe. My Great Grandfather who's name my mother knows, arrived in Guyana in the 19th Century,1800s.He arrived on a ship with indentured workers from India according to my mother. She said he had a love interest in one of his workers who he later married.my mother has more detailed information than I do,but I believe they had 3 or 4 children.one of those children being my grandfather Claude,I am unsure of the other names.I currently have a relative by the name William Puddicombe in Ontario Canada who is a cousin to my mother. The whereabouts of other relatives is unclear.

Georgie if you have any more infomation about the ancestry of puddicombe,or anyone else who is interested, please e-mail,or update this site, and I will do the same.

thank you

bernard.

Hi Bernard,
Puddicombe would appear to be mainly in the Devon area. As my line doesn't appear until the 1795 marriage of Margaret to James GRANGER, My research has been before then which has only let to Margarets birth in 1770. Most references before then I have found sketchy, but am hoping that a parish film I have ordered will help.

The name also appears in London mid 1800's but as you say your link left in the early 1800's I would think they may also be Devon based?

I will get back to you if I find something more concrete than guesses.

Cheers
Georgie, Western Australia.

I am trying to find info on Eliza Maria Puddicombe who married Thomas Bright in Carmarthen Wales. The lived in Notts Square and had a son Thomas Smith Bright in Sept 1858.

Her husband was an iron founder.

Hi Georgie,

My great grandfather was Robert Puddicombe, (b.1860 d. approx 1936). When his drunkard father (also called Robert) was evicted from their farm in Devon, Robert Jnr went to London in around 1880. There, he married Lucy Lavinia Physick (who came from Tiverton in Devon, but was also living in London, d.1952). This may account for the name Puddicombe turning up in London in the 19th century. Meanwhile, Robert's mother and sisters moved to Ilfracombe in North Devon. I have more information on this branch of the family if you're interested.

Yours,
Clare

Dear Susan

I have some limited information about a branch of the Puddicombe family moving from Ilfracombe (North Devon) to South Wales in about the 1870s. My Great Grandfather was one of the sons, but he couldn't go with them because he was contracted to an apprenticeship with a Draper in Devon. If you are interested, please write to me either via this message board or email direct to : cpuddicombe@tandb.co.uk

Yours,
Clare

If your mother's name is Carmen, then the U. Claude you mentioned is my uncle; and the William you mentioned could be my eldest brother. My 6 brothers and sister all live in Canada.
My paternal grandfather was James Ley Puddicombe who went to Guyana from England and there he met my grandmother whose parents came from India - my understanding was that she was born in Guyana. They had many children (Rose,Becky,William (my dad),Claude, Edith and Elsie). If these names mean anything to you, or to anyone else, please let me know.
