I am interested in this post. My great grandmother was Elizabeth Puddicombe. Her father, Christopher Puddicombe, was a Master mariner who sailed in the Indian Ocean and through to China at times. One of his daughters married John Allcock/Alcock, who also sailed ships on the same routes. This was in the 1850s. They married in 1853. John Alcock used Lascars as sailors, not European crew. His wife Elizabeth may have been half Indian or a Lascar. (Lascars were Arabian sailors who worked for rich Indians. They were often indentured. Some were half Indian, half Arabian). Elizabeth said she was born in Willesden Middlesex.

I have posted some information that may relate to Captain Christopher Puddicombe. My great grandmother was the oldest daughter of Christopher Puddicombe. Her name was Elizabeth and she married my great grandfather on the 18th May in Bombay in the Bycullah Church by the Rev. JD Gibson. She then travelled with him on "The Earl of Clare' and others. She had 3 children who were christened in Bombay, but at least one was born at sea, and one in Singapore. From other posts I have learnt that the Puddicombes owned 'godowns' in India. My grandfather sailed from Arabia via India to China. He took goods and opium to China.
I have some belief that Christopher Puddicombe may have lived in the docks area of London but I have no proof. Elizabeth was born in Willesden Middlesex. in 1835. I would be interested in any other information you have. My email is: george.whaley@harboursat.com.au

Hi Bernard; I just came across this post surfing the net. In fact, your grandfather (who recently just died in Guyana) was my father's - William Richard Puddicombe's brother. My dad died back in 1978 and my mother, Rahieman died over in Canada in 1997 at the age of 87.I met your mother Carmen and your brother Michael a few years ago when they visited Toronto. I had not seen your mother, nor did i know any of you - her children as i left Guyana (known as BG prior to independence in 60's) since 1970. The William whom u spoke of in Toronto is our eldest brother, known as Bill. There are 8 of us in our immediate family.

hi cara, i just read this following up on the puddicombe mystery. i am very curious of your great grandfather's history in the uk as James Ley was my father william richard's dad. My dad was born in british guiana, at the time in 1905 - now called guyana.

Most of the puddicombes from that era have now left guyana for canada and one in uk.
i dont know if u have read the other posts which all seem connected.

hi bernard again it's grenville
i have now been reading more posts from cara and mellissa and am convince of our connection reading of james ley etc.......i had forgotten to mention that in my original post. i am so glad to hear that he had a brother, and his age and year of migration to BG. he had gone there as an oversear and ran a plantation...meeting somaria and marrying which is where my dad and his many siblings orginate. i fondly remember his sister, aunt edit,my fav aunt who died in guyana just before leaving for Canada. aunt (re)becca died in BG as well.
Aunt elsie left for puerto rico where she died and had several children living there, but who were born in guyana. Finally uncle leon, and your grandfather uncle claude died in guyana.
this has been a very exciting 'find' for me on the internet as my uk sister had made some inquiries about the origin of the puddicombes and i'm gald of the information from cara.i am not sure who cara is tho....
