Hello to all Publicover relations, incl. Scott Teal (whose book I read re Publicovers). It was very useful.

I'm a children's writer in Halifax, NS, and am in the middle of writing a YA (young adult) novel based on the real-life sea adventure of Angeline Publicover. I am searching for info regarding her later life. Some of you may know about this fascinating character in the Publicover family tree.

Her amazing shipwreck and rescue story is recorded in a few history books, notably Archibald MacMechan's "Sagas of the Sea" and also in "More Tales Told Under the Old Town Clock." Her story is sometimes referred to as "Angeline's Wedding Dress," because she was bound for Halifax, on the coastal schooner "Industry," to purchase her wedding dress. The ship was blasted out to sea (Dec. 11, 1868) by a sudden snow storm and the seven people on board (5 crew, 2 passengers) suffered storm after storm for 18 days before a most dramatic and dangerous rescue by the ship "Providence," also of Nova Scotia.

They arrived in England, dictated and signed the deposition re the loss of their ship, and were given charity and passage back to Nova Scotia on the SS "Etna." They arrived home...and no further record appears to exist regarding the later life of Angeline Publicover, born in 1840 (?), except to say that she never purchased the wedding dress and didn't marry her fiance (so far, name unknown).

Although I have talked with several Publicovers, this Angeline seems to have disappeared from family chronicles, except to say such things as "she may have moved to the States." I'd love to know if anyone has further info.

I also have a copy of the only known photograph (according to MacMechan) of Angeline. She's beautiful.

Hope someone can help.

Joanne,

I recently started looking at the Publicover Lineage of my son's mother-in-law, who is a descendant of Lemuel T. Publicover (1852-1926). I see that you have a copy of the book "Presenting the Publicovers" by Scott W. Teal, and was wondering if Lemuel's lineage is in the book. I have not been able, so far, to connect with Mr. Teal, or find a copy to look at. Please reply here, or contact me at david.myers49@gmail.com .

Thank you for your help,
David M. Myers
