I would like proof that the man who sailed with Lafayette was really John P Tomey of VA. I have known of this for several years, have a copy of the document, but haven't been really able to prove these two men are one and the same. Have a letter from France when trying to prove the connection---couldn't gind any additional help there.
Just as a thought, I'm not so sure that Kyser Ptomey was off base on the Scotland idea. My family has always indicated the Scot connection and I've found it smart to listen to those older members of the family. They haven't been wrong on too many occasions. One other item that makes me think that Scotland may be the right path is that in one of the census records for Indiana (I'd have to re-check which one), Samuel Tomey who was a grandson of John P. Tomey lists that his father was born in Scotland. Now, we know that this is incorrect in that Michael Tomey was born in VA. However, Samuel was very old (in his 80's) when this census was taken and I think he gave the birth place of his grandfather instead of his father. I could be wrong, but it seems like a good possibility to me.
I would like to hear from all doing work on the John P. Tomey family. I'm interested in finding out more about Peter Jackson also. I keep searching, but I can't seem to find much.
I'm always willing to share any information that I have. I have L'lora McDaniel's files and worked with her when she was compiling her book. She was a cousin.
