If you're ancestors are from Scotland, you probably are a Tolmie. Which is actually a name derived from a gaelic nickname Na T[h]olmaich or Talamaich or "those of the island or hillock." Tulm is (Norse or Gaelic) an island in a river or near shore.

The Ptolomey would be a phonetic mispelling.

The Tolmies (taking on various spellings) tend to be centered in and around The Black Isle with 80% of the online Old Parrish Records (prior to 1855) being found in Inverness, Ross & Cromarty, and Moray (in that order).

The name is very rare and very geographically confined, so I would guess that most Tolmie (and derivatives) have a common origin. Although, only DNA can prove that :D.

Hope that helps.
