interested in message posted by J Ardagh in dec 2000 as I have ptolomey and ardagh (same person) in my family tree but not sure of reason of change of name

Hi Cherryl, do you have Charles Ardagh Ptolomey in your family tree (born in Dublin)? The Ardagh seemed to be a middle name passed from father to son, but somewhere along the line the two names got hyphenated in our family.

Hi Esther Yes I do - he was my great grandfather but my research has stopped there as I can't find out much about the Irish connection Cherryll

Hi Cheryll,
I am interested in both the names Ptolomey and Ardagh. In my research of my great, great, great grandfather Andrew Joseph Ptolomey he married an Ann Ardagh formerly Ann Mooney. He was born in Dublin in about 1824 and christened at St Catherine's Catholic Church in Dublin. He was in the army in India and Burma before being pensioned. Then went to Western Australia. Does this relate to your family research? I look forward to your reply. Janine

Hi, Cheryl
Please can you let me know who your Gwilliams are in your tree, I have Robert, William, Joseph, James, John and lots more, I would like to know if there are any connections.

not sure how this post got in the Ptolemy posts. My Gwilliams are from Worcester - Thomas Gwilliam father, son Thomas, grandson Edgar, great granddaughter Doris. Thomas was a blacksmith. They lived in Back Lane, The Tything. They might be related to ancestors in Leigh but I haven't made the link yet

Dear Cheryl
Can't answer as to how this happened, however I have a Thomas Gwilliam born 8/1/1843, father Richard Gwilliam 1817 this being my grgrgr grandad, my Gwilliams also came from Worcester, think I may have said Warwickshire sorry about this, but all my Gwilliams as far back as what I have traced are definately from Worcester. I also have a Thomas born 16/6/1811 born to John and Martha, as well as another Thomas 1865 also born to John and Eliza. Could there be any connection, I really struggle to my head around all this especially when they all seemed to name the children the same.

dear Michelle I cannot trace any of your gwilliams on my family tree so sorry. Most of mine were registered in Claines which came under Droitwich. Claines is a village outside of Worcester but also a civil parish so although mine lived in Worcester they came under Claines. Gwilliam was a very popular name in Worcester with it being so close to the welsh borders. Do you have an address from the census. My oldest gwilliam at the moment is Stephen b 1801. When you are searching the 1901 census you might find they have mistranscribed it as William if you do an exact name search so you don't get all the Williams as well as William. Also over the years spelling varied depending on the clerk as Gwillam (which is how it is pronounced in Worcester), Gwillim, Gwyllam etc so try all variations. besst wishes Cherryll

Dear Michelle Thank you for your reply. I don't know what the situation is like in S Africa but here in England our public library service has signed up to Ancestry and offer free access and only charge for printing. At the moment I am a bit bogged down with study but when I've finished in july I will look into a possible connection further and try and send more details for you. The address for Thomas will probably be Diglis st although I haven't found this on old map only Diglis Lane and Diglis Rd - Diglis is the canal wharf side around the Royal Porcelain works not far from the Cathedral mostly little terraced houses. My grandmother was born in Diglis. Haven't heard of Upton on Leen - there is an Upton on Severn south of Worcester towards Tewkesbury. Pitmaston Rd is up St John's on the west bank of the River Severn off the Malvern road. On the map houses look quite large. I don't know where Regent Place is yet. Worcester has a local history centre tel 44 1905 765922 which sell local street maps of around 1902 as well as other publications if you are interested. best wishes Cherryll
