Surnames: Ptak, Pitak, Pytak
Hello. My last name is Pytak. In the 1920's and a little before it was Pitak. I was wondering if anyone knew if Pitak was a variation of Ptak. I think it was Pitak when my great great grandpa came here, but im wondring if it might have been Ptak back in Poland. Maybe it was changed when they immigrated. Hope someone can help! Thanks!

Wow! Thanks for this information too. I am not sure where they were from in Poland. I know that the name definetly was Pitak before. And looking at the map showing the Pitaks and Ptaks, it looks like Pitak is most likely derived from Ptak. Especially since in English "Pt" don't go together.

You're welcome.

The spelling matters in "old country" as well as a location.
What US documents have you been able to collect on this ancestor? Anyone naturalized citizen? Had social security numbers? http://ssdi.rootsweb.com The church marriage record or church baptismal record should have a location.
What religion - Roman Catholic or Byzantine Catholic?

I'm actually planning on getting a Pytak's birth certificae record in the mail this week from Buffalo. I'm guessing it will say Pitak. And, like you said, it should have his parents location. I know the marriage records do too sometimes, as you said. I am planning on getting his marriage. They were all Roman Catholics. So if I find a location, would I be able to find the last name on one of those sites you gave me?
