Surnames: Przednowek; Chmielniska
My father-in-law (Charles Przednowek Schifris) and his 2 siblings (Icek "Irving" Przednowek Schifris and Magdalena "Madeleine" Przednowek Schifris) were Jews living in Brussels when their uncle (Adolf Chmielniska) was taken by the Nazis. Their Father (Enoch Przednowek) and mother (Golda Chmielniska Przednowek) sent each of the children into hiding.

The uncle and parents did not survive the war. When Belgium was liberated, the children were reunited and sent to New York City to live with Golda's sister (Sophie Chmielniska Schifris). They were adopted by Sophie and her husband (Isaac Elisha Schifris).

Both Irving and Charles have passed away and Madeleine was too young to remember much of what happened or the family's history.

It is believed that both Golda and Enoch were born in Poland, possibly Warsaw. Irving was also born in Poland, but the family had moved to Brussels by the time Charles and Madeleine were born.

From the Red Cross we know that Enoch was evacuated 24 Oct 1942 from Camp Malines to Auschwitz. Golda was evacuated 15 Jan 1944 from Camp Malines to Auschwitz. The Red Cross has not located records on Adolf.

Would like to find any of the following:
*when and where Enoch, Golda, Adolf died
*names of Enoch's parents
*names of Golda and Adolf's parents
*names of Adolf's wife and children (he was married and they had 2 sons)
*birth dates for any of the above
*marriage dates for any of the above
*addresses - even just town - where any of the above were born or lived prior to Brussels (we have that address and have visited it in person)

Many thanks!
Nan Schifris

Photo is of Charles, Madeleine and Irving in Brooklyn and is believed to have been taken on Yom Kippur 1950.

Hi, although you said that you received info from the Red Cross, did you also check with the archive at Auschwitz-Birkenau? You can do a search for prisoners at their website: http://en.auschwitz.org/m/index.php?option=com_wrapper&I...

Przednowek surname is found in their database, one of them Moric Przednowek was born in Chmielnik on 23 May 1900 - Brussel is also included with the name. Perhaps this is a relative? I've attached an image for you to see.

I made a request to the Auschwitz-Birkenau archives for some of my family and received a reply within a few weeks.

There are several villages named Chmielnik - you can see several listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chmielnik_(disambiguation)

The Przednowek surname that I'm familiar with is from the Subcarpathian - Podkarpackie Voivodeship....near Rzeszow. There is a Chmielnik village nearby. I don't know anything about the village, so I can not comment on whether Przednowek surname can be found there. The Przednowek's that I'm familiar with are Roman Catholic and Greek Catholic.

I hope this helps a little.
