Pry/Prye's from Scranton, Lackawanna Co., Pennsylvania
Searching for any info about Daniel Pry/Prye (b. 1836) M. to Mary Ann Lloyd (b. 1844) of Taylor and Scranton, Pennsylvania. Had 7 Children (that I know of) born between 1865 and 1880: William, George, Daniel (my great grandfather), Edward, Elizabeth (who I think married an Evans), Frank and Jonah.

Re: Pry/Prye's from Scranton, Lackawanna Co., Pennsylvania
I have been searching for Pry/Prye's from Scranton. I think I am descended from the son George. My nave is Betty Ann Prye (b 1948), daughter of William Carl (b. 1922) and Helen Herne Prye. William is the son of Cecil (sp?) (b. 1896?) and May Lewis Prye. Cecil is son of George and Mary Pry. All are from Scranton.

Re: Pry/Prye's from Scranton, Lackawanna Co., Pennsylvania
Hi Folks, I am from the Bry, Brey, Prye, Pry family in Carbon county PA. They lived in West Penn, Lansford, Summit Hill, and Mauch Chunk (now Jim Thorpe). From where did the Scranton Prye's come? Our name was spelled Prye as late as 1922, but by 1946 it had become Pry. Hope to compare notes. Thanks, Pat Pry McCormick

Re: Pry/Prye's from Scranton, Lackawanna Co., Pennsylvania
I'm not sure the connection. I believe that my Pry's and later Prye's were originally named Price and I know for sure they were from Wales. It was changed to Pry, I assume, because there were like 25 Prices in their neighborhood. I had another GGrandfather who changed from Davies to Davis because there were three other Arthur Davies in his neighborhood. It's all about the Post Office and getting your mail. I can't find them earlier in the record than the 1870 Census. Things before that are a little fuzzy. After that, my particular branch moved up to Central NY, others to Binghamton, NY and the rest a assume spread out around Eastern Penn. going by Pry or Prye.

Hi, Thanks for your interesting reply. When did your Pry come from Wales? We always heard our family came from Wales but can find no documentation of it. They all have come from Germany. If you have specific a specific name to check, I would be happy to compare our notes. Thanks, Pat M.

Re: Pry/Prye's from Scranton, Lackawanna Co., Pennsylvania
Hi Pat, I think we may have talked many years ago about our Pry families. I am doing a one name study on the Pry family with the Guild of One Name Studies (member 5806) and have been entering the US Census records in my Pry Prye Prey database. So far I have the 1790-1870 Federal Census records entered. I also have a DNA study at Family Tree DNA on the Pry Prye Prey families. If any male Pry in your family or the family from Scranton would be interested in doing a DNA test, I am willing to provide them with a free 37 marker test. Joanne Pry Howard

Hi again, although we were from a bit further south in PA, we have on file with Family Tree DNA a sample from my 93 year old Uncle George Pry. Would you know how to compare it from there? Pat Pry McCormick

Re: Pry/Prye's from Scranton, Lackawanna Co., Pennsylvania
I put up a basic family tree on ancestry called "Scranton Pry family tree". It should be public. Sorry I haven't been able to put up more names or specific info but I haven't had much time lately. It's a starting point. The Wales thing is a definitive thing because I got Daniels death cert. I'm assuming they went from Pryce to Pry. Though in the census it's spelled Price. Pryce is extremely popular in Montgomershire, Wales.

Re: Pry/Prye's from Scranton, Lackawanna Co., Pennsylvania
Hi Pat, Your uncle can join the Pry Prye Prey project. When he logs in with his kit# and password, at the top left it says join project. You can also compare at the public site if you search for the surname Pry. If he wants to receive matches from the database, I think he logs in and then checks that he wants matches. It would be interesting to see how he matches with the other two families in the project.

Re: Pry/Prye's from Scranton, Lackawanna Co., Pennsylvania
Daniel M Pry(e) is also my g-grandfather. (I was told they added the e when they moved to New York from Pennsylvania.) I think Daniel may actually have been born in Ohio, specifically Pike County. He and a Mary Lloyd are living in the same Scioto/Pike Co area in 1860. A Daniel Pry b. VA 1787 m. Ellenor Woodrough in Pike Co. in 1825. Of Daniel and Ellenor's seven children listed on the 1850 Federal census, Daniel M is listed as having been born in 1836. BTW - there was also a Daniel Pry in the 33rd Regiment Ohio Infantry in the Civil War. Only a hunch - but interesting.
