Benagie/Benagah Joseph Proffitt (TN and NC)

I am looking for information on my third great grandfather Benagie/Benagah Joseph Proffitt (1828-1909). He was the son of John Wesley Proffitt and Susannah Webb. John and Jane became Quakers. If Alice had married out, it would have been in the notes of Friends and she would have disunited. There is no mention of her in Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy Vol 6 which covers Virginia. The Pleasants, Cockes, Jordans, Carys, and Ellysons are included as are many other Quaker families.

Since John Pleasants, husband of Jane, died in 1698, he was most likely NOT the father of Alice, plus Jane was past menopause age when Alice was born. I agree with others that she is likely the daughter of John II, b. 1671.

My surname is Proffitt. My G G Grandfather is identified as Young McKindred Proffitt, born abt 1824 in TN and died probably about 1890-95 near O'Fallon, IL. Abt 3 yrs ago, we did a DNA test and found that we have a 37 marker match to several Douglases but no paternal Proffitts. One Young Elmore Douglas of Sullivan Co., TN married an Elizabeth Proffitt, daughter of George and Nancy Proffitt, Members of Young Proffitt's wife's (Jane Chester Patterson) family also settled there. We cannot find proof of YM Proffitt's parents. 2 questions: Does the name "McKindred" appear in your trees? Can you help me find the proofs for the William David Wilkey who is William Proffitt's illegitimate son? Finally, am I correct that this William Proffitt was descended from Sylvester Proffitt and not David Proffitt of London?

Hi Jayne,

I realise you posed this many years ago, but having just started looking into my family tree I'd not come across it before.

My grandfather, Claude, was Gertrude and George's youngest son. I have been doing some research and I think I have some more information about Gertrude's parents. Her father, James, was a lay preacher and file maker (not entirely sure of the name of Gertrude's mother) and was married three times that I can see. He lived at 111 Bloxwich Road, Willenhall.

Have you managed to piece anything more together for yourself? If so, please let me know - I think James is one of the more fascinating family members on the Proffitt side!

Hopefully you still check this board from time to time. My great grandfather, William W. Proffitt was born in Ray County, Missouri in 1854. His parents were Thomas Proffitt and Perneta Vanderpool. He had several siblings. Thought we might compare notes.

They did also have another son named Glen Melvin Proffit (b. 2/7/1934 - Nov. 1983) he was my uncle. Arthur F. Proffitt was my father. Arthur Leroy and Esie Marie were my paternal grandparents.

I have a Daniel Proffitt in Monroe, KY born in 1840 but Daniel is a common name for Proffitts. I'd have to do more checking for a spouse. This Daniel was son of Pleasant Witt Proffitt.

My dad was Ray (Artis) Johnson. I think we actually visited you once in Oklahoma. I hope our messages match up. Since my family lived in CA I am really disconnected from most of my family on both sides. I do keep in touch - mainly through Christmas cards with Alvie and Nilene. That's about it.

My father Jack Douglass Proffitt was the 2nd son of Richard Proffitt. Richard was the son of Samual Proffitt and on down the line to the original Sylvester who was from England.This batch of Proffitts were from McDowell County(Jolo),West Virginia.
The Proffitt family cemetery is located atop of an apple farm that the family owned at some point.It is located in Tazwell, West Virginia where Samual Proffitt was buried along with many other Proffitts from this area.
My Dad (Jack Douglass)talks in great length of the American Indian women that his grandfather married.She would be the wife of Samual.She was kept secret and hid in the Appalachians to protect her from the cruelty that Indians suffered from at that time.From all accounts she and my great grandfather lived a quite secluded life.In fact my grandfather Richard Proffitt who lived most of his life in Coalwood WV never left the mountain that he was eventually buried on in 2007.
My father Jack left Appalachia with my mother Marie Bishop when they were 16.They never returned.I am the youngest daughter of Jack and Marie whom eventually relocated to Huntsville,Alabama after retiring from the Army.Both are still living and are a great source of knowledge of the Appalachia Proffitts.

James Proffitt, born March, 1850 in Newton County, MO moved with his mother, MaryJane Patterson Proffitt and father, Young McKindred Proffitt to St. Clair County, IL between June and September of 1850. The next born to the family was William Y. Proffitt who farmed and probably worked in a local coal mine near O'Fallon IL all his life.
James eventually became a Methodist minister serving in the vicinity of Cape Girardeau, MO before he became ill. He died in St. Louis abt 1915. There were three other brothers. The oldest was Nathaniel, born somewhere in Tennessee in the fall of 1847 before the family migrated to southwest MO. He became a country doctor near Dallas Texas. John and George were both born in O'Fallon and a sister. George worked as a bookkeeper in St. Louis for the Terminal Railroad Co. John moved to Montgomery County Missouri and became a farmer. Their one daughter, Della married a Thos Wilson in Jonesburg, Montgomery County Missouri. I don't know how any of this resonates with you. I am not familiar with the riverboat story. It doesn't sound like anything that Wm Yancey Proffitt would have done.

Wow, thanks! Your info at least gives me a place to start looking. As for the riverboat story, I have both colorfi; and imaginative folks in my ancestry... I sincerely appreciate your response, and will let you know if it leads anywhere.

Esther B. Woodring Proffitt - Willoughby, Ohio

Mrs. Esther B. Woodring Proffitt, 79, of Willoughby, Ohio, died Wednesday, July 2, 2008, in the Manor Care Nursing Facility with her family at her side.
She was born Sept. 11, 1928 in Boone, N.C., a daughter of the late Frank Lewis and Mattie Elnora Moretz Woodring.

Mrs. Proffitt was a Lake County, Ohio resident for 51 years, living in Willoughby, Ohio.

She taught ceramics, and was an excellent seamstress and quilter.
She was a volunteer for the Cancer Society, a very giving person helping and participating in medical research studies.
Mrs. Proffitt was very devoted to her family.

She was the beloved wife of the late Loyd Silas Proffitt, who was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp.
They were married for 45 years.
Survivors include her children, Shelia Proffitt Hoffman and husband, Mark, of Willoughby, Ohio; Steven W. Proffitt and wife, Denise Tripepi, of Willoughby, Ohio; grandchildren, Matthew Steven Hoffman, Jacob Kyle Proffitt, and Andrew Henry Hoffman.
Memorial services were conducted Thursday evening at 8 p.m. at the McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home in Willoughby, Ohio, with the Rev. Brian Bagley-Bonner officiating.
Burial was private.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Mrs. Proffitt’s name, to the Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 East 185th St., Cleveland, Ohio 44119
and that you always make sure to tell your loved ones that you love them.
McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

I am trying to piece togather Sylvester Proffitt's lineage. He arrived from Liverpool, England in York, Virginia in 1716. He is my 6G Grandfather. I think he and David were related. On another website, Genealogy.com another lady says this about David Proffitt from England:

David Proffitt, born 2 Oct 1773 in Shenandoah, Page, Virginia, was the son of David Proffitt (1 Mar 1746 England) and Nancy Hatton (16 Feb 1747/8 Virginia). The the father, David, was the son of William Proffitt (abt 1716 England) and Elizabeth Ennis (abt 1716 England).

The David born 1773 siblings: James (10 Dec 1770 VA); William (20 Jun 1775 VA); John (17 Apr 1777 VA); George (15 Feb 1779 VA) and Jeremiah (9 Dec 1780 VA).

Any information concerning the Proffitt lineage in England/Scotland would be helpful.

Anna, I am from the Sylvester Proffitt lineage. I think, don't know, but I am researching as well, that David and Sylvester were related. Sylvester arrived in York, Virginia in 1716 from Liverpool, England. He is my 6G Grandfather. A mutual friend (Lenore is all I know of her name) has information on who you are seeking. This is my family line thru my father Lewis William Proffitt b. 4 July 1919 to Silas Ross Proffitt and Martha Ella Adams. Silas is the son of William Proffitt and Rebecca Linville. I believe this William is the son of William who is the son of DAVID PROFFITT and NANCY HATON.

I have had my genealogy since 2002. The dear lady that helped me with overseas lookups has since died. But she received most of her information from church records and government records and part from death records.
