My most distant Proffitt relative that I am aware of is James Proffitt, who would have been my great-great grandfather. He lived in or around Asheville, North Carolina before the Civil War. The name of his wife is unknown to me. The couple had at least four children: Jane (b. ca. 1848), Edna (no dates), Wesley H. (b. ca. 1863) and Martha Louise Terisa (b. Aug. 18, 1856 in Asheville). Martha Louise(called "Lou") was my great-grandmother. She died in 1934 in McKinney, Colin County, Texas.

Lou was married several times, and her first two husbands were cousins. Both had the surname Brown. I do now know the given name of her first husband, but the second one was my great-grandfather, David Noah Brown. He was born in Tennessee, married Lou in Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 1876, and died in Wetumka, Indian Territory, in 1898.
The children of Lou and David Noah Brown were Edd, James Walter, Myrtle, Lonnie, Mary Effie, and Valentine (called Tine). In addition, there was an older son named Zack, apparently the product of Lou's first marriage.

I'd love to know the name of Lou's mother. I'd love to hear from descendents of her siblings. Shirley
