I tried to send you an E-Mail back, however, it came back to me with an undeliverable status. I'll put the contents of the message here.

I have been trying to find out the name of my grandmother, Rebecca Berry's mother for awhile now. All the boks I've seen about this side of the family that I've seen call her Mrs. Berry, or the widow Berry. Never a first name. This Rachel Primrose might be the lead that I need, as Rebecca's daughter's name is also Rachel, it would make sense. The only thing is when looking up Rachel Primrose, it doesn't say anything about this Rachel being married before, or any other children besides the ones with the Vance guy. In this book I saw, my grandmother is said to be Mary Vance Warwick's half-sister, which would mean they shared the same mother because Rebecca's father was John Berry, if my recollection is accurate. Oh, and Rebecca was married to Jacob Gillispie.

My grandmother, Rebecca Berry is said to be Mary's half-sister when her mother married Jacob Warwick. This is in the book by William Thomas Price called The Historical Sketch of Pocahontas County. My grandfather, John Sutton Sr. was Jacob Warwick's manager at Dunham Farm.

HI Ian,
I can only gape with admiration at your diligence in researching your Primrose connection. I have nothing to contribute, but I see David Bailey, (who would win a 'Master Mind' contest on the Primrose family), has read your treatise and has got back to you already.
Good luck!
Chris

Re: PRIMROSE Family from C. Kerry, Ireland.

Hi Chris,

I am also on the same search as you, tracing the Primrose family back to Scotland. I am one of the Primrose family in the Republic of Ireland and am keen to trace the links back to Scotland. My search has been focussing on the Primroses in the Meath/Cavan area since that is where I am from.

The farthest back I have information on at the moment is my great grandfather and great grandmother: James Primrose and Elizabeth Anne Thistle. James was born in Co. Cavan in 1868. There is however a bit of confusion over the year of Elizabeth's birth; using the age she provided on the 1901 (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000442447/) and 1911 (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001700959/) Census her year of birth would be 1876 however an online index search of Cavan birth records shows only one Elizabeth Thistle born in the forty year period around 1876 (i.e. 1856 to 1896 inclusive) and it gives her year of birth as 1880 (a check in the National Records Office should help clear this up). James and Elizabeth were married in the Church of Ireland Parish/District of Mullagh in 1892. This would make James around 24 and Elizabeth around 16 (if you take 1876 as being her year of birth, if she was born in 1880 she would have been 12) when they were married. They had five children Elizabeth B., Mary A. McC., John, Matilda M. and William J. The eldest Elizabeth B. was born in 1893. She was followed by Mary A. McC. in 1896, John in 1898, Matilda M. in 1900 and William J. in 1901. There are several Thistle families living in the Carnagarve area in 1901; Carnagarve is only 5km from Crossbane, the area where Elizabeth and James lived. This would suggest that these Thistles are relatives of Elizabeth.

The 1901 Census (taken on Sunday 31st March 1901) shows Elizabeth Primrose as being the head of the family and a widow at age 25. She is a farmer living in Seeharan, Crossbane, Co. Cavan with her children Elizabeth B. (8), Mary A. McC. (5), John (3) and Matilda (1). Although it is not recorded we know that she was pregnant with William J. who was subsequently born on May 1st 1901. Also not recorded is the fact that her husband James had passed away in late 1900 aged 32; as yet I have no information as to the cause of death however I hope that a search in the National Records Office will yield a death certificate. They lived in a two to four room concrete/brick/stone walled house with a wooden/thatched roof which had three windows in the front. They also had a stable, a barn, a cow house and a piggery. This, according to the Census, would have been classed as a 2nd class house (to put this in context: of the ten houses in the Seeharan area seven were 2nd class and three were 3rd class); the number of out houses is not taken into the calculation that determines the class of house and is recorded separately. Elizabeth and Elizabeth B. can both read & write while Mary can only read and John and Matilda can neither read nor write. Elizabeth B. and Mary are both listed as scholars therefore they were either attending school or were receiving regular tuition at home. Also present in the house that night was Elizabeth Semple; she is listed as being an Aunt, aged 86 and a widow. She can read & write and it is noted that she is retired from business. Perhaps one of the most interesting things is that her country of birth is Scotland. A lady called Bridget Lynch from Co. Meath was also present and is listed as being 22, not married and a general domestic servant; she can also read & write. All members of the Primrose family are listed as being Presbyterian, as is Elizabeth Semple while Bridget Lynch is Roman Catholic.

The 1911 Census (taken on Sunday 2nd April 1911) shows an improvement in the standard of living of the Primrose family. Elizabeth is 35 and is still a farmer living in Seeharan, Crossbane, Co. Cavan with her daughter Elizabeth B. (18), sons John (13) and William J. (10); Mary and Mathilda are not present in the Primrose house on the night of the Census. They lived in a 10, 11 or 12 room concrete/brick/stone walled house with a slat/iron/tile roof which had five windows in the front. They also had a stable, a cow house, a calf house, a dairy, two piggeries, a fowl house, a turf house, a potato house and a shed. This, according to the Census, would have been classed as a 1st class house (to put this in context: of the ten houses in the Seeharan area two were 1st class, five were 2nd class and three were 3rd class); as with the 1901 Census the number of out houses is not taken into the calculation that determines the class of house and is recorded separately. All members of the Primrose family can read & write and Elizabeth B., John and William are all listed as scholars indicating that they were either attending school or were receiving regular tuition at home. We can see from the Census return that Elizabeth and James had been married for eight years; this confirms 1892 as the year of their marriage based on James dying in 1900. We can also see that Elizabeth gave birth to five children all of whom survived. A man called Joseph Clarke from Co. Cavan was also present and is listed as being 33, single and a labourer; he can also read & write and is a member of the Church of Ireland. Mary and Matilda are not at home on the night the Census was taken, they were in fact in boarding school. They both appear on the Census return for the Bertrand School for Girls located at 10 Eccles Street, Dublin. Mary (15) and Matilda (11) are listed as being pupils, can both read & write and are Presbyterian.

I have followed up on Elizabeth Semple who was present in the Primrose household during the 1901 Census and is listed as being an Aunt and born in Scotland. Having found no record of an Elizabeth Thistle that fits the age range required in the Scottish Records Office I have discovered an Elizabeth Primrose who was born on 15th July 1814 in Leslie, Fife (this fits perfectly as Elizabeth Semple was 86 at the time of the 1901 Census; the Census was taken in March and she would have turned 87 in July). Following on from that I checked for marriages in Scotland between an Elizabeth Primrose and a spouse with the surname of Semple (as I did not know her husbands name), this returned a single result. Elizabeth Primrose (23) was married on 25th May 1838 in Portmoak, Kinross, Scotland to a man called Semple. Portmoak is just five miles away from Leslie, the place where Elizabeth was born. These records tie in with the information supplied on the 1901 Census therefore it is relatively safe to conclude that Elizabeth is part of our family's link to Scotland. I decided to try and deduce the name of Elizabeth's husband; given that William, James and John seem to be names used in later generations I started with these. William and James returned nothing but John was a success. We now know that Elizabeth Primrose married John Semple! The next step here is to get the birth and marriage record for Elizabeth and this should provide information on her parents. The information on her parents should allow me to find out about her siblings; she must have had a brother in order for her to be listed as an Aunt to the Primrose family on the 1901 Census (she would have been James' Aunt). This is the first direct link I have been able to establish between our branch of the Primrose family and Scotland.

Regards,
Ian

Primrose - Madron, Cornwall

I am searching for information relating to Edward Primrose, born about 1643 in Madron, Cornwall. Edward had 2 daughters, Katherine born about 1689 and Mary born about 1690. Katherine married Edward Tregurtha of Breage, Cornwall, their children included Edward Primrose I,(my 3 x Great Grandfather), William and Phillis (who married Thomas Leah).

Edward P Tregurtha I married Mary Burgess, their children included Mary Eliza (who married Charles Goldsmith), Edward Primrose II (who married Elizabeth Bussell and moved to Tasmania/author of The Tregurtha Log), Elizabeth Harvey, Emma Williams (who married Alexander Dennis and moved to Victoria, Australia), Sophia Burgess (who moved to Australia and is buried in Healesville), John William Burgess my 2 x Great Grandfather (who married Sarah Abrahams and settled in Williamstown, Victoria, Australia), Annie Ellen and Matilda Burlton.

Family history suggests that Edward Primrose joined the Royal Navy (possibly in the 1660's)and rose through the ranks, possibly to Commander. He was captured by pirates in about 1690/1700 and taken to Tangiers as a galley slave. From there he escaped and made his way back to England, but upon his return he was attacked by a press gang and severely wounded. How much of this story is factually correct I am unsure as I have not been able to locate any information regarding Edward's Naval career. The story is related in the writings of his Great Grandson Edward Primrose II.

I would be grateful for any information relating to Edward, his wife, or his daughters Katherine and Mary and any other children he may have had.

Hi Cameron,
If your "Craigies" are from Rhynd then there is definitely a connection.
My gx3 grandfather James Craigie was born in Leitchill in 1776, my gx4 grandfather also called James was born in 1739 in the Parks of Fingask, Rhynd, my gx4 grandfather, yet another James, was born in 1713 in Rhynd and finally my gx6 grandfather George was born in Tarsappie in 1695. George seems to have been the first of my Craigie line born in Rhynd as my gx7 grandfather George Craigie was born in Perth in 1670.
If you don't know the area, Leithchill and Tarsappie are on the NW border of Rhynd, quite close to the river Tay.
If you have a tree on Ancestry perhaps we could share? If not I would very much like the opportunity of seeing details of your Craigie ancestors.
If you would prefer to contact me directly, send a message to my Ancestry account (EricC48) and I will give you my email address.
Regards
Eric Craigie

DM,
Presumably the Primroses were good at hiding?
Conservatively there were at least several hundred in Ireland, probably more.
The Primroses of Tralee and Caherciveen trace their ancestry back to Scotland in the seventeenth century to Alexander Primrose (1610-1679) and his first wife Elizabeth Keith, not to be confused with the Rosebery line which is descended from the same Alexander Primrose through his second wife, Agnes Gray.
I have some information on Julia / John Primrose that may certainly help if you wish to contact me at sonofcam@bigpond.com
Regards,
David Bailey
Brisbane AUS

Hello,
I just found out that my 2nd great grandmother was a Julia Primrose of Caher Parish, County Kerry, Ireland who married a Darby Griffin & had my great grandmother, Catherine Griffin in 1855. Catherine came to America in 1870. I got Julia Primrose's name from Catherine Griffin O'Keefe's death certificate as well as her father's name. It is all the information I have.
Since there were only about 10 Primroses in all of Ireland, she probably was related to John Primrose of Cahersiveen, but I'm not sure if she was his daughter, niece, cousin.
Best,
DM

I have had one detailed reply sent to me off-board from Australia which contains good information with a possible connection to the Carrington/Rosebery Primroses, maybe! If anyone else has information on the Co. Kerry Primrose family please do not hesitate to contact me.

On the site landedestates.nuigalway.ie under the O'Connor name can be found reference to the estate of Hillgrove, Cahersiveen as the residence of John Primrose in 1837. It was built by John Primrose, Senior, Agent to the O'Connor Estate in the early19th century. It was being leased by John Primrose (possibly the son John) to a Denis Caughlan. David O'Connor is recorded as the tenant in 1854.

PRIMROSE Family from C. Kerry, Ireland.

I'm interested in tracing the Irish Primrose family name back to Scotland - if that is possible!
I have a JOHN PRIMROSE (1765-1840) who married Honoria O'CONNELL. This Primrose family were residents of Cahirciveen, Co. Kerry, Ireland. A son, John PRIMROSE, was born in Co. Kerry in 1796 and he married Ricarda O'CONNOR (1796-1848) in 1830. He died in 1865, leaving three children - Elizabeth (Betsie), born 1831; Philip, born 1833, died 1872 in Melbourne, Australia; Daniel O'Connell, born 1835 in Co. Kerry.

It has been suggested that the first John Primrose may have had a father called James Primrose who was related to a Gilbert Primrose from the Scottish Primrose (Rosebery) family. No evidence of this connection has been seen, but it doesn't mean it doesn't exist!

I would be interested to hear from any Irish Primroses.

Chris Duff in Canada

Re: Primrose Family Research

I don't have much more information. In fact I didn't even know the other two wives names. However, I work with the daughter of the 3rd wife Veronica. Veronica just recently passed away and the daughter knows nothing about her family. I told her I would look into it and found your post. I have Arthur H. Primrose born 8/31/1896 but I found a census that has his dad's name as Abraham Primrose born in 1865 and married to Lena from mexico born in 1869. The census also states that Abraham was a musician. Is this Abraham and Adrian the same person? Would love to have more info on the family if you have it. If you would like email me at mkjenks@juno.com
If anyone else has info please let me know. Thanks

Re: Roy Delbert Primrose and wife Maxine Marie Sevening Cedar Rapids, IA area 1925+

Roy Delbert Primrose was the son of Adam Primrose and Maude Lillian Rose 25 Jun 1902. Adam is the son of John Primrose Sr. (1836-1907) and Juliet "Julia" Mac Gregor (1840-1916). Most of the children of Adam were born in Norway, Benton, Iowa. John Primrose, Sr is the son of James Primrose (1812-1904) and Elizabeth Collins (1815-1879). They emigrated in 1850/51 and took up farming in Iowa. One of their daughters was Mary J. Primrose who married William Campbell Robertson. Mary was born 28 May 1838 and died 21 July 1905. Although on her death certificate her mother's name is listed as Elizabeth Godd (same woman). Iowa was opened up in 1848 and many counties were created/named later. This is my family line and I have much information on them. Most of the Scots arrived in New York staying with family already there. I hope this helps you some.

No, sorry, that's all I have. Some researchers have given her name as Pressgroves. So, it is a real dilemma. Can't find her marriage license or death record. Both she and her husband, Daniel Osteen, were deceased by 1870, as their children were spread amongst relatives to raise. Any info anyone has would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Janice

My James Vance (1691-1757 to 1777) m Rachael Primrose (b1754).

James Vance received a grant of 305 acres from William Beverly in what would become Bath County in 1749. He must have passed away shortly afterwards, because in 1752 his widow Rachel was in possession of the land. In 1800, John P Vance's sons sold portions of this land, which they had acquired by inheritance. On a note from 1762, John P Vance signed his name John Primrose Vance, from which it is assumed that Primrose was his mother's maiden name. A similar tradion holds in the Warwick family, into which John's sister Mary wed; it was said that her first daughter was named Mary Primorse Warwick after her grandmother.

they had 5 children:
John Primrose Vane m Martha Worth
James Vance
Benjamin Vance
Samuel Vance m Sarah Bird
and Mary Vance (1743-1823) m Jacob Warwick (my line)

if any of these names sound familiar to anybody please contact me Carolyn at Mooloolaba@aol.com

Re: Is there a connection between the Scottish and Norfolk Primrose's

The Glastonbury Survey of
1189 contains a curious hint that two cottages are more valuable
than one half-virgate: two cotlands were ruined during the war,
and they were thrown together into half a virgate, although it
would have been more advantageous to keep two houses on them,
that is two households.

Taken from: http://socserv.mcmaster.ca/econ/ugcm/3ll3/vinogradoff/vill3....

The virgate was a unit of land area measurement used in medieval England, typically outside the Danelaw, and was held to be the amount of land that a team of two oxen could plough in a single annual season.[citation needed] It was equivalent to a quarter of a hide, so was nominally thirty acres. A ‘virgater’ would thus be a peasant who occupied or worked this area of land, and a ‘half virgater’ would be a person who occupied or worked about 15 acres (61,000 m2).

The Danelaw equivalent of a virgate was two oxgangs, or ‘bovates’: as these names imply, the oxgang or bovate was considered to represent the amount of land that could be worked in a single annual season by a single ox, and therefore equated to half a virgate. As such, the oxgang represented a parallel division of the carucate. Accordingly, a 'bovater' is the Danelaw equivalent of a half virgater.

‘Virgate’ is an anglicisation of the Medieval Latin virgatus. The historic English translation was yardland.
My connection to the Primrose family was with Lady Primrose who was the widow of the third Viscount Primrose who lived in Essex St. off the Strand, London. She was a supporter of the Jacobite Cause. This was linked to the help Flora McDonald gave to Bonnie Prince Charles (Jacobite) when she helped him to escape to the Isle of Skye. My family is a direct descendant of Flora McDonald (in those days this was spelt Macdonald but was of the same clan)
The book Flora MacDonald by Hugh Douglas mentioned Lady Primrose's support for Bonny Prince Charlie.
I hope this may be of some use.
Heather

Dulcinia is also my ancestor and, sadly, I haven't been able to find her birth/baptism either. She's my 5x grt grandmother. I've also been researching her husband Richard Taylor's family.

Alison

Re: Primrose of New Jersey

Hello,
I am searching for the parents of Abigail Coe (b.~1738) who married Gilbert (Gilbard) Ludlam (Ludlum) of Morris County, New Jersey. Some say she was the daughter of Benjamin Coe and Rachel Prudden, but others say Benjamin and Rachel's daughter married John Primrose. Does anyone have documentation? Also, does anyone have documentation that William Sutton worked at Ford's Powder Mill?

Thank you,
Caroline

My grandfather was a Wright but one child in each family carries the Primrose name still. My daughter is Jean Primrose and I I have Primrose in my name. Thomas Learmonth was in my grandfathers name.

Primrose line - Scotland

Hi. Am new to all this. I have traced back my maternal side of the family back to a David Primrose born 1756. Together with Elizabeth Ashton, born 1781, they had a son called William. I haven't been able to go back any further than David but am keen to see if he connects up with any other Primroses in Scotland.

I can see there are many other threads around Primrose so thought it best to ask
