Re: Prader .... Prater...
Kathy ... I will provide you as much info as you need to determine if our families are connected. Francisco Manuel Prader of Santa Cruz County, California married Maria Antonia Castro -- these are my grandparents. They had one son and three daughters and two other daughters that died as infants, all born in Monterey or Santa Cruz Counties, California. I have very little on my grandfather Prader other than he had 10 brothers and sister, all having been born, raised, lived and died in California. This is basically an Hispanic family of the de Castros of Spain. They came over to Mexico when it was "New Spain" and then on to Alta California on the de Anza Expedition of the mid 1700s. They accumulated thousands of acres of land, again in the Monterey and Santa Cruz County areas.
To my knowledge, there was no American Indian ancestry in the family, but then with research, I too have been surprised what I find.

My husband's family also came from Switzerland, we have always heard that the name was originally Volpius and the name Wulpi was issued at Ellis Island. My father-in-law has always insisted that there are no other Wulpi's in the world. The note posted mentioned a Nicholas Wulpi from Switzerland. Does anyone have a family lineage for him?

According to my 1958 birth cert. my father was James E. Prader from Illinois. My parents were never married, and before her death, my mother said she was told he died in 1999. My DIL is putting together a family history for my grandchildren, and I know nothing about this side of my family. Any lineage-type information would be appreciated (his parents, grandparents, etc.) including years for birth and death if available. Thanks in advance.

Hi John, Just started researching so new to all of this. I am trying to research my grandfather William T Prader and not getting very far. Only have that he was born 1895 in Pennsylvania. I am unable to even get a death record. As far as his parents I am coming up empty. However, I have heard from relatives that his parents were from the border of spain/Portugal and that there was a name change. I saw your post and am hoping there may be some connection. Any info you can provide I would appreciate. Thanks Ro
