WOW, that was quick! Thanks for the reply. I think this is mostly a shot in the dark but you just never know what you might find.

Surnames: Prachar, Bittner
I have just started researching the Prachar family in Saline NE for a friend. Hopefully, this is still an active topic now.

Karel/Karl/Charles Prachar and family arrived in the US in 1874. I have been able to determine that Karel Prachar was from Sopotnice, Litomysle, Chrudim.

"Nebraska, Kansas Czech Settlers, 1891-1895," a book by Margie Sobotka lists the residents for each county by name and village of birth. The book is online at the Czech Heritage Project on the UNL website - http://www.unl.edu/czechheritage/Margie_sobotka.shtml.

I found Vaclac Bitner listed in Lancaster CO NE but no village was listed. Ant J Bitner was in Colfax CO with a village Milovec, Domazlice, Plzen. Jos Bittner in Sheridan CO says "Do not know" for village.

I don't know what other names you looked at but the Prachjl family in Saline are from Vosecek, Podebrady, Caslav.

The Czech Heritage Site is worth taking a look at for further information.

Thanks for your reply. I have looked at the book and in fact I have a copy of it that I found at an auction. Of course. The one name I am looking for, Vaclav Bittner, did not have a village listed. I was disappointed to say the least. This has been my one very elusive ancestor.

I have not looked at the Bittners that lived in other places in Nebraska. I have come across the Anton Bittner before. The Anton Bittner, Vaclav's son, that I looked for moved back to Canada. I finally found where he went to in Canada. Found his wife living in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada around 1840 when she was listed in an obit for her brother who died in Wilber Nebraska. I know that Anton Bittner, my greatgrandmother's brother and Vaclav's on went to Canada around 1900 with his wife and two daughters. A third daugther was born in Canada.

I came across something in the last Federal Census record that Vaclav Bittner appears in. It looks like the name of a village or district in Austria in the columns that ask for their place of birth. But I can not decipher it. I can't tell for sure what some of the letters because of the handwriting.

I still think that the Bittner came to Wilber because there were other relatives here or someone who lived near them in Bohemia. I have tried to figure out the maiden name of Vaclav's wife but can not make out the letters on that either. I found that info on the marriage license application for their daughter, Anna, my greatgrandmother.

Now that I am writing all this to you I have come up with a couple of other ideas as what to look at. Anna's brother and sister both were married in the early 1890's in Wilber, Ne. I could try to find their marriage license applications and see if it given the place of birth for the parents like it did on Anna's. Also I might try to check out the other Bittners in Nebraska at that time, maybe they were related.

Thanks for writing, you got me thinking.

familysearch.org has Nebraska marriage index for:

Anna Bittner
birth: 1868 Austria
marriage: 2 September 1886 Crete, Saline, Nebraska spouse: Deitrick Flackman

Anton Bittner
birth: 1869 Bohemia
marriage: 28 February 1893 Wilber, Saline Co., Nebraska spouse:Mary Kovarik

Mary Bittner
birth: 1875 Bohemia
marriage: 12 September 1893 Saline Co., Nebraska
spouse:William Belson

Maybe these records will help. We are ordering the marriage record for Joseph Prachar and Ann Svoboda for the same reason - can't tell what the mothers' maiden names are.

Hi Gary!

Your grandfather -- Alfred George Prachar -- is my great uncle. His sister, Viola, was my grandmother.

I was wondering if you knew the maiden name of Helen (your grandmother). I've been searching on Ancestry and other sites and cannot find anything.

Blessings,
John Ragan
