I am descended from Charlotte Poyner of Independence County AR. Her grandfather is William Poyner, found in 1860 Newton County AR and 1850 Carroll County AR. Analysis of the entries for William and his children indicates that William was born in Virginia about 1795; moved to Tennessee before 1824 (son M. B. born in TN 1824); moved to Illinois before 1830 (2 sons, one named Lafayette, born in IL); moved to Arkansas before 1845 (several more children born in AR from 1845 on).
William's wife is recorded in the census as Elizabeth, born about 1785/1788 in North Carolina. They would have been married prior to 1824.
I have been looking at the various records available online for early VA and NC and think that this William may be a grandson of Joseph Poyner recorded in Currituck County NC (may have died in 1790). I'm hoping someone may have information -- possibly from Norfolk Va and/or Currituck NC -- which could shed some light on this William's origins.

William Poyner VA->TN->IL->AR
An update: I've now located William in 1830 Franklin County IL and 1840 Carroll County AR. Still don't know exactly when he was in TN nor where he was born in VA.

Re: William Poyner VA->TN->IL->AR
William Poynor, Sr. and sons William, John and George were in Jackson County, Georgia ca. 1802-1817. William, Jr. went to Illinois. George died in Jackson Co. ca. August, 1816. John and wife Polly moved to Marion County, TN. It is possible that the William Poiner in Bledsoe Co. TN in 1830 is William, Senior. William Poynor, Junior and some of the children of John Poynor eventually moved to Carroll County, Arkansas. William Poynor, Sr. was probably a Revolutionary War Soldier, but the records do not mention which county. The sons were War of 1812 volunteers from Georgia.

Re: William Poyner VA->TN->IL->AR
Indeed. Where is this info coming from? Sounds like you've found some good stuff down in Georgia. The only Poynor revolutionary record I've seen is a pension file for Thomas Poyner in Currituck, NC.

Re: William Poyner VA->TN->IL->AR
Reference: "Virginia Military Records" by Bentley; "Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution" by Gwathmey; "Revolutionary War Bounty Land Grants" by Bockstruck. The original land grant is located in the National Archives. November 7, 1811, Five warrants, viz. Four for 500 acres each, No's 5964, 5965, 5966 & 5967, and one for 66-2/3 acres No. 5968, issued to John Hobson & Matthew Hobson assignees of Wm. Poyner, and were delivered to said John Hobson. Amount of land granted indicates that Wm. was a Lieutenant.

Re: William Poyner VA->TN->IL->AR
Hi Ina, A little speculation... Dorothy cited a William Poyner land transaction in Georgia witnessed by a Middleton Brooks. I wonder if this is the source of the name of our ancestor Middleston B. Poynor?

Re: William Poyner VA->TN->IL->AR
it could be,Scott.I always wondered where the name Middleston came from. I thought @ one time it might be because he was the middle child.LOL!!!! Ina

I have no records, but I am wondering if the Poyners who remained in VA were slave holders. I am the daughter of an African-American Poyner, and these names are awfully common in my family - my uncle is William Joseph Poyner; my grandfather was Joseph Watson Poyner, born in 1910; his father was Joseph Cephus and Joseph's mother was named Charlotte - I sense that there must be some connection. My g-grandfather was a shipbuilder in Norfolk. There are also an Anaias and Channie Poyner along the line, somewhere.
