You perhaps could try out the Finnish Institution of Migration:

Institute of Migration / Emigrant Register
Piispankatu 3
20500 Turku, Finland

Telephone +358-2-231 7536
Telefax +358-2-233 3460

E-mail: krister.bjorklund@abo.fi

http://www.migrationinstitute.fi/migration/er_search.htm

I didn't find anything approaching Matijos (Matijas?) Pöyliö on the passport and passenger records on the website. Perhaps you can find some help from the institute, however.

There has also been made a survey of our family, but it isn't available to me readily. In general, your ancestors may stem from Kemijärvi or Rovaniemi parishes. The belong today to the Lapland district, historically to the province of Outer Ostrobotnia. In any case, they belong to one of the older families f those localities.

My grandmother's maiden name was Hilda Poylio. She married Olli Maatta and lived in Vermillion, MN. My mother Signe Mary Maatta Salo was a cousin to Harold Poylio. (Olli changed his name from Maattaniemi to Maatta and later on one "a" was dropped and it was changed to Matta.)

My Dad called Olli Matta "Bicycle Matt" because Olli liked to ride the roads ringing the bell on his bicycle.

Was one of your Uncles a Matta that lived in Duluth and had sons named Lenny and Ronnie?

I have a picture with the caption " one of Harold's relatives" that shows a farm family with buildings and a horse. Can I send it to you?

Hi! I just saw the message board and saw your response. My Uncle Matt (Matta)lived in Duluth and he had sons Lenny and Ronnie and a daughter, Marjorie ( I think .) Uncle Matt passed away when I was around nine years of age. I would love a photo or copy. Do you have any family history on Gramma Hilda Poylio? What was her mother's name? We were in Finland in June. (My husband was born in Finland and speaks Finnish. I do not, but alot of Finns speak English now too.)We couldn't locate history on her. I would appreciate any info you may have. Thanks, Elaine ejsvalitalo@hotmail.com P.S. I tried your e-mail. It came back Delivery Status Notification: failed

I should have added the procedure to remove the "NOSPAM" from the email address before using it. On the USENET postings, this is added to foil the bots that gather addresses for spammers.

Went with the phonetic wording of Pöyliö in English.

I found out that my Grandparents left Finland via Sweden in 1902. Grandfather wanted to escape serving in the Russian Army. They crossed the Atlantic from Liverpool to Boston on the Cunard Line. Found their names "Poylis".

I have found my grandfather, when born he was Matts Henrik Juujärvi, son of Olof Olofss Juujärvi. His sister Mathilda, and the family were living on the Juujärvi farm before moving to ala Pöyliö about 1896. Also found his marriage record (1902) in the regional archives in Oulu.
